Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

The problem with our PP, IMO, is that our moves are too predictable. The point shooters are taking too long to think, and the passing/positioning isn't setting up good looks. For that matter, DET was forcing us to take outside shots 5 on 5. After RJ's goal, I don't think we had more than 1-2 shots from inside the face-off dots (that weren't rebounds from long shots).

Now that you got me thinking about Hitchcock's past teams, the ones he had success with featured Modano, Hull, Langenbrunner, Nieuwendyk, Lehtinen...I don't see that kind of offensive talent here, excluding Nash (not even gonna mention the nasty D). So, without 4-5 guys who can be counted on as point a game players, what is a Hitch team like? Mid 90's Sabres or Devils? Do we have to try and win 1-0, 2-1? Or is this team so young we don't really have an identity?

(i didnt look these up this is off the top of my head, shot me if im wrong..)

my point is you cant really compare this team to hitchs 97,98, 99 teams in dallas. right now this is one of the five youngest teams in hockey. growing pains will be there, half the roster from a year ago is gone. blah blah no excuses but worth noting.

WTF, JO. You post a pic of Max Talbot with a non-playoff beard ? That may be acceptable if he was a worshipper of the visor, but at least look for his true playoff beard from the Stanley Cup Finals, considering he boycotts the shield. He sports the best beard on the team.

Disappointing result, but not terribly displeased with the team's play. Too casual with the puck for stretches, particularly the 3rd period. Detroit definitely won this game and was the better team, but despite the similar score, it wasn't anything like 4-0 dismantling from a couple weeks back. This felt more like a game Detroit should've won 3-2 or 2-1, not 4-1. A couple breaks here or there and the Jackets could have stolen this one.

DET 1. I don't know what happened to Russell's partner at the blue line, but there was contact with Hudler and the Jacket went down, leaving the 2-on-1. I never saw a good replay...what happened with the contact out there? CBJ initiated? Also, could Russell have been more useless on that rush? He didn't deny either the pass or the shot there. (Maybe it's just me, but has he looked particularly bad defensively for the last month?) Mason had no chance.

CBJ 1. Good forecheck and going to the net. This is how the CBJ needs to score. The tic-tac-toe shit is fun to watch, but not when you can't make the passes. Then it just leads to odd-man rushes.

DET 2. Oh, Manny. That's 2 in 2 games on shots that weren't even on net. :smash:

DET 3. Damn. Another tough break. :smash:

DET 4. Only soft one by Mason. But you still can't let a guy walk out unmolested on his forehand like that. Two CBJ took the other wing behind the net and left mule alone with the puck.

Near misses....Great glove save by Osgood on someone, crossbar by Peca (Somewhere, a Buffalo fan chuckles at Peca's misfortune), diving play by Vermette to stop Hossa's easy goal.

Jackets had their chances, but didn't bury them. You can't NOT be planting these when you've got the chance. :shake:

What concerns me is that Detroit didn't play all that well last night, and the Jackets didn't play terribly, but it was still a 4-1 loss. :ohwell:

And one more thing....is there not a single d-man on the CBJ who can get a damn shot through to the net? And I'm not talking a 55-foot wrister with no traffic. I want to see a fucking slapshot low to the ice that has teammates jumping over it so they don't get their fucking ankles broken. I've never seen so many pucks bounce over sticks, whiffs, partial fans, broken sticks, and blocks on point shots. It makes me curse.

I love Russell's puck-handling ability, he carries the puck up as well as anyone else on the team, but the boy can't get off a shot to save his life lately.

teams are pressing out. stretching the game out. think basektball and defenders getting up in faces at 25-27 feet. need to get by the guy, pressure from the halfwall, a boomer shot from the point, etc. look how far out the cbj are (blue line area) when most other teams are closer to the circles when the team is playing "offensive" (the guys on a lot of teams pinch up when the puck is on their halfwall, on the goalline on thier side). its simple, it means longer passes, longer shots. which are picked off, blocked, etc easier. the result is slower puck movement and hap hazard offense.

im interested to see possible lineup changes.

russ doesnt have the strength needed, hes small, young and just doesn way that much, teams are getting physical and pushing him out he is letting them push him out.

hitch calls the wings "cheaters" today. mentioning their faceoff tactics. he is right. but, typical playoff posturing to call attention to the way the game was whistled.

Crysby and Therrien did the same thing last year. Oh well.

He's lucky klesla didn't get one penalty for the assault on Holmstrom last night.

We look like a bunch of school girls out there. This is frustrating to watch. Were constantly taking hits and not hitting back. Detroit's done a great job of shutting down Nash, and they just scored again,,,:shake: Someone get out the broom

What's the definition of trying the same thing over and over, expecting a different result each time? Insanity.

The Red Wings box the net during the playoffs. You can't get through. The Jackets need to stop trying to go down low. Start taking some wrist shots from outside.

In reality, the Wings are just a completely different team during the playoffs. I feel for you guys. Trust me, I know how it feels to get a wakeup call from the Wings.
