This one's over. Detroit is just better.
Knew that going in, but the Jackets are going in the right direction and this series will definitely help them down the road. DOn't get me wrong, I don't want to sound defeatist, but Detroit should win this series. But, again, with a relatively young team, a taste of the POs is huge

Well that was a dose of reality for the Jackets. Once the Wings smell blood, things can get ugly quick. Their spacing is so good at both ends, it makes dumping the puck look like a big play. The Jackets need to find a way to gain the offensive zone with speed, and RJ's the only guy we have that is suited for that. Jackets need to come up with some set plays to break DET's trap, but first, they need to find a way to get the puck out of their zone in an organized fashion. DET was much quicker to the puck tonight. They were dictating where we could move the puck, and that just sets up their transition game. That's why finishing checks is so important, we need to force them to be out of position, but when they are in their sets, we're always a step behind. The last guy to touch the puck is fair game, though, and we need to start taking them out of the play. No shame in losing to a higher seed in their barn, but we're going to have to make some major adjustments to have a chance in the series. I don't think we can out finesse them, so we have to try and win ugly. Once the series comes home, I'd like to see Hitch get our top line away from Lidstrom.

nationwide also used to have black nets, they changed to the white/clearish nets a few years ago. the light color nets are supposed to be better in person.
I was at a game near center ice this season (Last boston game) and thus didn't sit behind the nets, but that makes sense, I guess since the game is played on a white surface.

Green nets, eh? I had no idea.

thats big, the last shift (home teams get to put their players on the ice after the visiting team has). think of it this way for the non big hockey fans. the game in the shoe this year vs usc, pete carroll has to line his team up then jt can send out his personel and line his team up, huge, huge advantage.

lineup change? dorsett, murray (injured?), novo, pic, gratton. id expect a shuffle, just a guess.

faceoffs, the first 30 mins columbus did fine, actually above 50%, then it went to poop.
peca 5-13 (2-9 nz)
manny 8-18 (2-7 dz)
vermette 6-16 (2-8 dz)
team 43% (ev 40% pp 73% sh 0%)

datsyuk 14-19 (7-8 oz)
zetterberg 8-19
helm 5-6 (5-5 nz)
flippula 5-11
team 57% (ev 60%, pp 100%, sh 27%)

shots on goal 34 (14-12-8) wings 21 (13-6-2) 21 jackets

the wings had 10 tk jackets 2
17-16 in favor of wings in blocked shots
37-26 wings in hits

nash was held without a shot on goal after the 1st period
nash, jake, manny, williams, chimmer, peca, umberger all went shotless in the 3rd...

the team was out hit in the first contrary to what some think, they did force the wings wide.

id expect a small juggle on the lineup front. gotta hit, didnt hit, gotta play a tighter checking game.

?? Is that a typo (pk), or am I forgetting a stat?

Where do you put the Jack's chances after tonight? I'd like to think we can steal a game or two, but after the Wings stopped giving us PPs, it looked like they were just toying with us. A team with more pure shooters could have made them pay for their early mistakes, but I don't see us scoring much unless we can create some breakaways or get really nasty around the net. From what I've seen this season, I'm not confident that they can make major adjustments. It seems like they either come out swinging, or chasing the puck. But we have to start hitting at every opportunity to have a chance. DET's system is so smooth, we need to take their guys out of plays to get them out of rhythm. If I were playing a video game, I would move RJ to LW to get him away from the lock, and try lobbing it into the zone on that side with him streaking up the wing. Not sure if that's realistic, but we need to control the puck deep in their zone, and RJ's our best speedster.

takeaways.

Where do you put the Jack's chances after tonight? same as before. relatively long. they need one win in det min (i honestly think it will take two) I'd like to think we can steal a game or two, but after the Wings stopped giving us PPs, it looked like they were just toying with us. A team with more pure shooters could have made them pay for their early mistakes, teams push out agains the cbj pp, the same thing you saw with the basketball team, no one to keep em honest, they push out the guys on the blueline and it stretches it all out, spacing is good, to much makes it a long shot/pass, etc. but I don't see us scoring much unless we can create some breakaways or get really nasty around the net.typical hitch hockey, imo. had a couple of turnovers early that they didnt convert ont. From what I've seen this season, I'm not confident that they can make major adjustments. adjustments or still limited, i mean its a young team and a glaring weakness is at the point/blueliner. It seems like they either come out swinging, or chasing the puck. yup, if they play tight checking game thier hard to beat, if not, well you watched the second period... Not sure if that's realistic, but we need to control the puck deep in their zone, and RJ's our best speedster.chimmer, who was pretty ineffective, boll didnt hit much. heck datsyuk was more physical than half the guys tonite wearing white sweaters...

bold.

The problem with our PP, IMO, is that our moves are too predictable. The point shooters are taking too long to think, and the passing/positioning isn't setting up good looks. For that matter, DET was forcing us to take outside shots 5 on 5. After RJ's goal, I don't think we had more than 1-2 shots from inside the face-off dots (that weren't rebounds from long shots).

Now that you got me thinking about Hitchcock's past teams, the ones he had success with featured Modano, Hull, Langenbrunner, Nieuwendyk, Lehtinen...I don't see that kind of offensive talent here, excluding Nash (not even gonna mention the nasty D). So, without 4-5 guys who can be counted on as point a game players, what is a Hitch team like? Mid 90's Sabres or Devils? Do we have to try and win 1-0, 2-1? Or is this team so young we don't really have an identity?
