Lost our best defenseman (Hainsey) and a dynamic offensive player, added no one remotely equivalent IMO. One of the poorest offensive teams in the NHL goes backward in firepower.

What an enormous disappointment. I have lost interest for the most part in the CBJ; this free-agent season pretty much seals the deal. Fooey.

I certainly wouldn't say Hainsey was a dynamic offensive player. As jo mentioned earlier, he puts up his points on the power play, not even strength. He had 8 points (0g, 8a) even strength in 78 games. In comparison (even strength only) Klesla had 12 (3g, 9a) in 82, Foote had 11 (0g, 11A) in 63, and Hejda had 11 (0g, 11a) in 81. He definitely was a very good point man on the power play, but he's no Nick Lidstrom.

Replacing him at the point on the PP will, however, be very important. :)

Michael Arace commentary: Howson's patience gives Jackets a new identity

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DORAL CHENOWETH III | DISPATCH
The Jackets gave up a lot in winger Nikolai Zherdev, yet the front office believes it strengthened the team. Zherdev was second on the team in scoring last season.

Judging by the first 48 hours of the free-agent season, the Blue Jackets have a two-pronged plan. They want to fill needs. And they want to shed the unneeded, and unwanted.
Hello, defensemen. Goodbye, Gilbert Brule and Nikolai Zherdev.
It is rare for a team to get rid of one recent first-round draft pick. It is unthinkable to get rid of two. Brule, the sixth overall pick in 2005, was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Raffi Torres on Tuesday morning. Zherdev, the fourth overall pick in 2003, was traded with Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman yesterday afternoon.

NHL free agency
Zherdev exits in makeover
Blue Jackets trade winger, Fritsche to Rangers for pair of defensemen, then sign Huselius for scoring punch

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson walked out of his Nationwide Arena office about 10 last night, exhausted after a two-day run that brought significant changes to the roster and bumped the franchise's payroll to its highest level ever.
First came an eye-opening afternoon trade -- right winger Nikolai Zherdev and forward Dan Fritsche were sent to the New York Rangers for two defensemen, Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman.
Then, late last night, shortly before Howson turned off the lights, the Blue Jackets signed high-scoring winger Kristian Huselius to a four-year, $19 million contract. Huselius, who will make $4.75 million per season, had 25 goals and 66 points with the Calgary Flames last season.

hainsey wasnt a true #1 point man. sorry. just isnt. he really doesnt control the puck that well and that is obvious in his 5v5 numbers. his shot was a little erratic and really didnt put it on net all that well. for the kind of money he got, i am happy to let him walk. and happy he got the money. good guy. hollywood will be missed, but he is nothing to write home about in his own end. he really doesnt "move the puck" he is an offensive defensiveman.

hitchcoach will build his team out of guys who generate offensive of the check. he wants to check you, cause turnovers and play the other way.

how many times did hainsey get the puck and throw a nice break out pass? his game was to carry it and on the man power. the strength of this team will be physical guys who bring it. those guys also need to have the ability to throw a nice first pass. this will generate a rush and offense. rick nash's speed is underrated. how many breakaway attempts has he had the last two years? why? because the team could not throw the stretch pass, well and becuase he became more defensively responsible. but i like what i am seeing. i wouldnt be suprise with some more moves.

bk, lidstrom? come one. the dude is awesome. if he was born in canada or played across the detroit river most would consider the six time norris trophy as one of the greateset of all time.

you dont like the moves?

answer me this, is this team better than it was before the draft? better than it was june 30th? july 1? the morning of july 2?

someone i know and respect very well sent me an email that i came into work this morning and saw. ill summarize that email. scott howson reminds him of a young jim tressel. when he says young he means circa 2001. this is a guy who people thought was in over his head, who stood around and did nothing, people complained. missed on some "big fish" and people complained. then he made some moves, smart, methodical moves that developed. he made changes and changed styles. it will be interesting.

i will tell you this, this team has had two identities. the first one was a fast team. now not a skilled fast team, just fast. they couldnt score or pass, or shoot or do much but man those early jackets could skate, and skate fast. they looked like a bunch of water bugs squirting around the little group they were with dave king at the helm. good coach, crappy players. look at those early rosters. robert kron on your first line? aubin? caloun? espo? pushor?, quint? sean pronger? allison? marshall on the first line? double shifting pirejta to generate offense? jean luc grand oh my goodness was he awful? captaink hook i mean hardina? carrying a guy like balastik as a skater (granted if the nhl were to adopt a designated shoot out position he makes about any team) the second identity-sucking. never being really reall dead last bad. but always sucking you know 6th worst team in the league every year.

ill say this about the moves. brule had baggage. if you are 21 you shouldnt have baggage. maybe sidney crosby can have baggage, malkin, kopitar sure. but not a guy who had 9 pts last year. or a guy who has 32 pts in 146 nhl games. sorry. jagr can have baggage, hes worth it. not guys like that. you dont get sent down to the minors on your 21st birthday becuase the world is happy with you. thats a message, did he respond? eh, not what i like. message sent and you dont know if its received. he still has talent but look at it this year. most of the pups stayed close to the nest. they want to prove they belong, they want to be the next jared boll and theyll tell you that. they want to work hard, run, skate, lifts weights early in the morning to make the team, to make an impact. where was brule? he was woken up after sleeping in, in vancouver. thats his choice. heck of a talent, hope he can find it. tad small but i will say the oilers could ream us in this trade. that said i feel confident we made the better move today. and we got a decent guy who still has plenty of tread on the tires.

z-well z. you know hes an enigma. he was back in russia when he got the news. z made that choice to. it was mildly obvious what was going to happen once the trade deadline pass. hitch let z freewheel. play his game. so that meant one of two things, either hitch had accepted z's style or someting was brewing and the choice had been made to drive up his stock. picked up a very very solid dman and an nhl caliber one for him. and that solid dman is locked up on a very nice looking contract. how many would beat that z doesnt go home to the rsl/chl after his contract up? not saying he will but i believe thier is a chance, and its not 1%. what that chance is, who knows. will either flourish or flame out in nyc. hope him the best of the best good kid. intersting kid, that said could he score 80 pts next year. likely.

firtsche. the first "home town jacket" if you dont count mike rupps short stay. good third line guy who can chip in. hes a big osu guy, indians, browns. you know what you get. energy, speed and effort. can chip in. nice third line player when healthy. there lies an issue. wrist injuries the last two seasons caused him to miss the strech runs (or tanks if you will) and the shoulder issues. best of luck to a really really great kid.

also look at this, scott has traded two 1st round prospects(one player one prospect), a 1st round pick, and a second round player

im guessing you wanted big moves? flashy big names. i warned you on that. but, would you rather have a guy who played on calagarys 1st line and average 70pts the last two years and a #3 dman than wayne redden? redden is a #2 guy who has shown holes in his game. jackets wont spend to the cap. i like the moves. will their be more? dont know but i do begin to see an identity... (and its not sucking)

true but on the pp you need two guys on the points who can shoot (on net), pass and distribute the puck. heck wieght use to quarterback the pp off the halfwall. brassard i know has played the point in the cuse. still an aread for improvement. but im not so sure that playing with nash in front of the net/on the ice a few goals dont generate on their own.

Couple quotes from ESPN's rumor mill (the update from today):

The Blue Jackets were one of the seven teams bidding for [Brendan] Morrison, but their offer was pulled after they signed F Kristian Huselius on Wednesday, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

The Ottawa Sun, which reported Wednesday the Lightning offered to trade [Dan] Boyle to the Senators, added the Thrashers, Blue Jackets, Sharks and Panthers as interested teams.

Weren't you guys blasting this guy a few pages back?

NHL sources told the paper the Canucks, Thrashers and Blue Jackets are "desperate to make a splash on the free-agent market" and are looking at making offers for Vermette and Meszaros.

That quote is about Vermette.

morrison pulled the plug on the cbj, not the other way around.

hes a joke. yes. interest, maybe. legit, eh. im all for kicking every tire.

the same guy from the ottawa sun also tossed out meszaros along with vermette. dont know. but id guess its a mid level center (2-3 type guy) or a cap casualty. it looks like lots of teams will be within 3m of the cap and id personally want 4m or so of space so a move could be made at the deadline. (so you could get a 5.5-6m player if you tossedout a 1 or 2m player plus prosepcts/picks)

jo4h, a few thoughts.

1. To begin with, it is clear you know way more about hockey than I do; in discussing the Jackets with me you are truly engaged in a "battle of wits with an unarmed man.":tongue2:

2. The Huselius signing was a very pleasant surprise to me. Commodore not so much. He was -9 on a playoff team (Senators) in 26 games; the team was 9-13-4 after he joined the team, and they had been 34-18-4 before the trade. WTF? Doesn't seem like he was a positive addition to the Sens. (OTOH, we are clearly not the Sens.)

3. I guess I am more of a Hainsey fan than most on here. I think in today's NHL he is well worth $4.5 mil per year, and I think more of an effort should've been made to keep him.

4. Zherdev I am conflicted about, but the trade seemed one-sided (and not in the CBJ's favor) to me.

5. You brought up a number of excellent points that had not occurred to me. Thanks for the education!

The fans will love Commodore for not only that crazy hair, but his hip checks. As long as everyone understands he's a three-toed sloth when it comes to skating , he'll be a contributer, just not a very big one.

I'll just have to wait and see the season before I believe that the Jackets did not get fleeced in the Rangers trade.

What do the updated lines look like, JO?
