THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Michael Peca was hoping to sign a two-year contract with the Blue Jackets. Instead, the 34-year-old center settled for a one-year deal and a chance to prove he's back to his old ways.
Peca and the club have agreed to a one-year, $1.315 million contract, The Dispatch has learned. All that remains before the deal is official, Peca said, "is to finalize a couple of minor details."
"If I can have the season I feel I'm capable of, I'll be able to put myself in a better position to earn a bit more money down the road," he said. "I'm healthy now. I feel great. And I'm ready to compete like crazy once the season starts."

Hitchcock signs three-year extension as Blue Jackets' coach

Associated Press
Updated: July 9, 2008, 10:13 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets signed coach Ken Hitchcock to a three-year contract extension, locking him in through 2011-12.
Last year, in his first full season as the Blue Jackets' coach, the team set a franchise record for wins (34) and points (80) while going 34-36-12.
Before that, Hitchcock coached the Dallas Stars for five seasons and parts of two others, winning the Stanley Cup in 1999. He also coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2002 to 2006.
The 56-year-old Hitchcock has a career NHL record of 470-314-117.

Hitchcock will oversee outcome of rebuilding
Extension will keep Jackets coach here through 2011-12

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After getting fired by the Philadelphia Flyers eight games into the 2006-07 season, Ken Hitchcock found himself at a coaching crossroads.
He could have waited and been hired by an established NHL club. Or, midway through a storied career, Hitchcock could accept the biggest challenge of his life by joining a work in progress.
Hitchcock chose the latter, taking over a Blue Jackets club that was in disarray and years from winning consistently.
Strange as it sounds, Hitchcock said it was the right decision yesterday after he signed a three-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season.

Rob Oller commentary: Hitching wagon to coach is best move yet

Thursday, July 10, 2008 6:21 AM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The biggest offseason signing in Blue Jackets history -- the face of the franchise, mind you -- doesn't score goals or play defense, isn't much of a skater and struggles to move the puck. His weight hovers around 275 pounds, on a 5-foot-10ish frame, and the only time he has worn the C is when jokesters liken him to Captain Kangaroo.
This is the guy the Jackets are pinning their hopes on? Yes, and it's hard to argue against them. Ken Hitchcock, who signed a threeyear extension yesterday to coach the Blue Jackets through the 2011-12 season, is more important to the team than any recent free-agent signing or draft pick. Taking it a step further, Hitch is the single most critical piece the Jackets have in place. Some franchises fit their philosophy to a player. The Blue Jackets are focusing everything on their coach, a decision that general manager Scott Howson has made perfectly clear.

Nice article from the Dispatch about last year's fourth round pick, Maxim Mayorov. The article mentioned that he's the 2nd best finisher in the development camp, bested only by Jakob Voracek. I'm really excited to see what these kids can do.

NHL: Mayorov's talent needs no interpreter
Russian showing scoring knack to Jackets

Maxim Mayorov speaks little English, so the 19-year-old Russian right winger hasn't strayed far from his agent/interpreter this week during his first trip to Columbus.

Yesterday, after day two of the Blue Jackets' development camp in the Dispatch Ice Haus, Mayorov had lots of folks willing to help.

When asked by a reporter to describe his style of play, Mayorov didn't say even two words before fellow Russian and Blue Jackets prospect Andrey Plekhanov leaned in with his own answer: "scoring machine."

Mayorov started laughing. No interpretation was needed. In hockey, it seems, goal-scoring is a universal language.

Re: Mayorov, who plans to spend the summer in Columbus, is living in the Arena District apartment owned by former Blue Jackets winger Nikolai Zherdev, who was traded last week to the Rangers. He's still getting used to the surroundings. But on the ice, he's looked right at home.

There's why Zherdev was traded, they needed his apartment.

Blue Jackets: Signed, but not delivered

Nikita Filatov says he has done everything necessary to leave Russia.

The Blue Jackets signed 18-year-old center Nikita Filatov to a three-year, entry-level contract yesterday, but the process of getting the No. 6 overall draft pick to North America has just begun.
On Wednesday, Alexander Medvedev, president of Russia's new Continental Hockey League, said he expects the Blue Jackets to compensate Filatov's Russian club, CSKA Moscow, at least $500,000 in each season for Filatov's rights. The Jackets and the NHL vehemently disagree with Medvedev's stance.

Jackets notebook: Brassard leaves good impression

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets wrapped up development camp with a four-on-four intrasquad scrimmage yesterday. Center Derick Brassard stepped in despite a bad back and lit up the Dispatch Ice Haus.
The hockey operations staff, including general manager Scott Howson and coach Ken Hitchcock, have said all week that the camp would not be used to evaluate players, but instead to get them acclimated with the system and with their future teammates.
The players' take: Yeah, right.
Brassard looked good in limited action. Jakub Voracek and Maxim Mayorov also looked good, but that was to be expected.

I live in a condo and after the 2006 season one of the guys, can't remember his name, signed a free-agent contract with Chicago and he rented his condo to another player who was also from Czechoslovakia. He left after last season to go back home. These guys must swap places all the time .
