Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Commodore:
~Excited to be coming to Columbus. Commodore was one of the first calls the Bugs made.
~Played with Nash and Chmera last year in Russia in World Championships.
~Money plays a big part in decision, but also talking to the coach and GM.
~Wanted to go to a place that he likes, but also a team that seems to be headed in the right direction.
~Played against C-bus twice and he came away very impressed. Felt that they were a hard team to play against. Feels that success for the Blue Jackets is right around the corner.
~Not here just to collect a pay check. Came here to win.
~Keep trying to get better.
~Herby told him "When in doubt, say Go Bucks."
~Commodore said he's turning in all of his NC State stuff for Buckeye gear.

I like the way Mike sounds. Sounds like a guy who will be great in the locker room.

Scott Howson is coming up next.

Scott Howson on 1460:

~Herby told Howson that he loves Commodore's personality and seems to have great leadership qualities. Howson agrees and says that's part of the reason that they went so hard after him. Great community guy.
~Commodore will be physical and aggressive. Fun to watch. Doesn't sit back and wait for things to happen. In your face and that's part of our identity now.
~Torres: Expect him to be fully recovered by camp from knee injury. Unique player. Can change momentum of game either by a big goal or a big hit.
~Zherdev/Fritsche trade: Backman and Tyutin will upgrade backline and puck moving ability. Pleased with the way that the back end looks and we need to work on our forwards now.
~We will continue to work on forwards and we are going to try and make that work into the night tonight and see if we can add another piece tonight or tomorrow.
~D is upgraded over last year. Couldn't score goals last year partly because we couldn't move the puck.
~At this point we are going the FA route and not trades to try and get some forwards.
~Tyutin is a guy we've had our eye on, but it just came up today (w/the Redden acquisition).
~Still have work to do.
~Look for top 6 forward, not necessarily a center.
~Not looking for a specific F position, but a player that will make us better. Umberger can be a top C.

Interesting that they are not now focusing on the C position, but on a F position whether it be winger or center.

Portzline said Huselias is on the radar ( 25 G 41 A for 66 points last season).
Howson also said that he feels that Brassard is ready to take the next step.

Lost our best defenseman (Hainsey) and a dynamic offensive player, added no one remotely equivalent IMO. One of the poorest offensive teams in the NHL goes backward in firepower.

What an enormous disappointment. I have lost interest for the most part in the CBJ; this free-agent season pretty much seals the deal. Fooey.

I believe Jan Hedja is our best defenseman. He shuts people down. Thats why there is a new deal for him. Great player

I'm going to give the new direction a chance. They are getting some tough SOB's that show up every night. Consistency and defense have always been the team's downfall. I think this is being well addressed. They just need to get a top line forward to help with the scoring. (Which it seems Howson is committed to getting) If Pascal comes through with another big season, they will not be a team people look forward to playing.

Pas was pretty damn good without a great back line. It seems to me that this new philosophy of putting some oaks in front of him as well as having them be able to clear out the front of the net will only make him better.

Umberger is the best center Nash has played with on this team. If Brassard can contribute some minutes and Modin can stay healthy then who knows where the scoring can go? I'm willing to give this new look a chance.

At the price Hainsey took Atlanta for, the CBJ are better off to have let him go.

Don't give up on them yet. It isn't like they are dismantling a Stanley Cup champion yet. Hitch knows what he's doing and it's just a matter of management getting the players he wants into his system.

signed kristian huselius. nice pick up.
25/41/66 in 81 g last year
34/43/77 in 81 g the year before.
played for keenan in calgary.

Very nice. I actually like what the Jackets are doing so far. The defensive group has been upgraded significantly, we've added a gritty forward in Torres, and we've added a playmaker in Huselius. We just need that center.. Hopefully the Morrison deal goes through.

They're making moves that improve the team IMO. That's all I'm going to ask for at the moment.

EDIT: I always say "we" when talking about a team that I like. :p

Anyone you'd speculate that the Jackets would go after?

I'm never going to stop asking you questions, JO.

EDIT: ESPN's FA tracker has a misprint and it says that the Jackets signed a 29 year old Doug Weight. :p
