Blue Jackets
Rob Oller commentary: This team keeps getting better, but when will it finally be good?

The Blue Jackets received winger Raffi Torres, above, from the Oilers for former first-round pick Gilbert Brule.

Instead of making a splash, the Blue Jackets dipped their big toe into the pool of free agency. Whether that makes the franchise all wet depends on one's level of patience and definition of progress.
Some will say signing a sturdy defenseman in Mike Commodore and trading for a stocky winger in Raffi Torres are steps in the right direction. This is the patient approach applauded by those who realize Commodore and Torres make the Jackets immediately better, if only by inches instead of miles.
Patience, however, is in short supply on Nationwide Boulevard, where seven seasons of what fairly can be described as futility have the fan base weighing gas prices on one hand and Jackets season tickets on the other. In that sense, Commodore can't save a sinking ship.

NHL free agency: Jackets pick up pair on Day One
Howson excited about additions of Torres, Commodore to team

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets made a full-on assault at landing two-time All-Star defenseman Wade Redden yesterday when NHL free agency opened at noon.
By the early evening, after a dizzying flurry of phone calls, the Blue Jackets were let down easy by Redden's agent, who told them it wasn't term or money that caused Redden to rebuff the Blue Jackets and join the New York Rangers.
The Blue Jackets, simply put, have some winning to do before the Reddens of the hockey world will take the plunge.
To that end -- winning and making the playoffs -- the Blue Jackets made two significant moves, adding maniacal winger Raffi Torres in a trade with Edmonton and signing hard-checking defenseman Mike Commodore to a five-year, $18.75 million contract.

Re: The average fan is not close enough to the internal workings of the team to patiently put up with the process of growth and improvement that someone such as general manager Scott Howson sees daily. Those inside the organization notice not only improved talent on the ice but behind-the-scenes upgrades in areas such as concessions and quality of merchandise in the team store.

Very true; so that is why we have jimotis4heisman, i.e. to point the "growth and improvements" out to us.

Is anyone here really seriously concerned about upgrades in the concessions and quality of merchandise?

Yeah... not so much. :tongue2:

I mean, if that stuff directly translated to wins, I'd care. But..

I like what they've done so far.

I like the fact that Commodore is excited to come in and play for Hitch.

I'm excited again. I don't really give a shit about Hossa, I just can't stand the Wings.

Sean Avery to the Dallas Stars.

JO,
Obviously Hitch has a system and a particular type of player that he wants to bring in for that system.

My question is: Looking at who was in the finals (Pens v Wings) they aren't exactly your grinder type teams. Can a Hitch team win it all in a more finesse NHL?

Sweetness, so this trump card is a good thing. Marian Hossa is going to be living in my neighborhood, isn't he?

(kidding :tongue2:)

Only if you live in Detroit. The rich get richer.

Hossa off to Hockeytown

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings have apparently bolstered their roster in attempt to make another run at the Stanley Cup, as superstar right wing Marian Hossa will join the champions for the 2008-09 season.
According to a report on the club's website, Hossa signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. The Detroit Free Press reports the contract to be worth $7.4 million. Hossa split last season with Atlanta and Pittsburgh and was among the most sought-after free agents on this summer's market. He was the biggest trade commodity at last year's deadline and the Penguins acquired him from the Thrashers as part of a six-player swap.

JO,
Obviously Hitch has a system and a particular type of player that he wants to bring in for that system to a hitch style. especially dallas. the crunchies went a long way in the playoffs with a bunch of bad bad doooods who wanted to play bad rough and tumble with an attitude with a line who could bang and score and finesse line (brassards). it may be a nice combo. can you go deep, sure. will this team, who knows...

torres said it on the radio in toronto today and said its a young team, that played inpeoples faces. hitch and howson said they want to get in peoples faces.

youtube commodore and torres, what do you find? flashy toe drags and curls? or guys beating the you know what out of dudes and open ice hits, muggings in the corners. do you think zetterberg/datsyuk/hossa want to get in the corner with guys like that? thats the plan, you cant out skill that lineup. hell i dont know if team canada could... but you can punch them in the face and hope they cry to their moms like little girls.

My question is: Looking at who was in the finals (Pens v Wings) they aren't exactly your grinder type teams. Can a Hitch team win it all in a more finesse NHL?
in short dallas and philly made it pretty far... they are pretty comparable.

anyone see why moving the puck out of the zone may have been extra hard at the end of the year?
the only R shot left in the upper level of the system is andrei plakhanov who is a year or more out from the big club.
