BOSTON -- In the calm between two winter storms, the Blue Jackets got in and out of Boston without experiencing any accumulation of snow -- or goals.
The Jackets created few quality scoring chances in a 2-0 loss that had about as much personality as a Bill Belichick news conference.
The Bruins got a first-period goal from former Blue Jacket Jeremy Reich and their stout defense, led by pterodactyl-like Zdeno Chara, did the rest in front of 14,058 fans in the TD Banknorth Garden. Marco Sturm added an empty-netter with 12 seconds remaining.

The Bruins' P.J. Axelsson, bottom, upends the Blue Jackets' Jared Boll.
BOSTON -- Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock might want to suspend judgment on forward Gilbert Brule for a little while -- say, three years.
"Come talk to me then when he's (23) and lighting it up," Hitchcock said.
For now, Brule is looking for any kind of spark. The winger has one goal and three assists.
"He's learning what it's like to play with men. He's learning hard lessons," Hitchcock said.

Curtis Glencross was trying to reply to one of those questions reporters know probably can't be answered: When players obviously don't want to be inconsistent, when they know the system works and want to play within it, why don't they?
Stupid reporters.
"Whoever comes up with a theory for that is going to be a very, very smart person," Glencross said.

Curtis Glencross tries to sweep around Cory Sarich of the Flames while attempting a pass in the third period.
If this were October, Jiri Novotny would have scored on a second-period breakaway, Pascal Leclaire would have squeezed his pads tight on the Calgary Flames' second goal and Rostislav Klesla would have buried a wide-open wrist shot from the low slot midway through the third period.
But times have changed for the Blue Jackets, and not for the better.
As a rosy outlook for the New Year continues to hang in the balance, the Blue Jackets aren't creating their own breaks, and they sure aren't getting any.

The Blue Jackets' Derek MacKenzie fights the Flames' Adrian Aucoin for the puck in the first period. Aucoin scored the Flames' first goal.
The struggling Blue Jackets' power play finally drew blood late in the third period last night of a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames.
Forward Curtis Glencross probably has the stitches to prove it.
Glencross suffered a cut under his right eye after Kris Russell's attempt to keep the puck in the offensive zone clipped him on the cheek.

Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena won a 24 games last season, but it was the 23 losses that concerned him more.
Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena is not one for facades.
While he wears a mask to protect his face, he makes no effort to hide his feelings.
He crackles with game-night intensity regardless of whether he's nursing a 2-1 third-period lead or staring down teammates during shootout drills in practice.
