The Blue Jackets' Adam Foote, left, and Pascal Leclaire celebrate after Leclaire notched his seventh shutout of the season.

As the Blue Jackets piled on their equipment for the pregame skate last night in Nationwide Arena, they began to notice that a certain someone wasn't seated in his locker stall.
Left winger Rick Nash was missing.
"My locker is right next to him," rookie right winger Jared Boll said. "After a couple of minutes, I was like, 'What's going on?' "
Nash, because of throat inflammation that restricts his breathing, didn't dress for the Atlanta Thrashers, becoming the latest and biggest name on a growing injury list.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets forward David Vyborny is good friends with Jaromir Jagr of the New York Rangers.
They have been teammates on Czech Republic national teams and have trained together in the offseason, and they might be reunited in the coming weeks.
The Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers have been discussing a possible trade, an NHL source told The Dispatch yesterday, and one name mentioned has been Vyborny, an original Blue Jacket and the franchise leader in points and games.

Nikolai Zherdev is too far away to take advantage of the puck dribbling past Predators goaltender Chris Mason.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A young country artist, trying to make it on the Nashville music scene, could pen a fairly credible tale of woe by documenting the Blue Jackets' recent struggles against the Predators.
From the Blue Jackets' perspective, it's misery on par with your dog getting run over by the ex-wife as she backs down the driveway in your favorite pickup truck.

Predators defenseman Marek Zidlicky gets his stick up in the face of Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll in a scramble for the puck.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Defenseman Rostislav Klesla was being asked how the Blue Jackets neutralized Atlanta sharpshooter Ilya Kovalchuk on Wednesday night when teammate Jan Hejda interrupted.
"Koval-who?" Hejda joked in reference to the NHL's leading goal scorer.
Hejda clearly is becoming more at ease in the locker room and in the Jackets' defensive system.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash expects to have offseason surgery to remove a small remaining portion of a tonsil that has given him big problems.

Adam Foote duked it out with Predators forward Jordin Tootoo on Thursday in Nashville.

Earlier this week, while trade rumors swirled around the Blue Jackets, general manager Scott Howson was asked whether captain Adam Foote was on the trading block.
Those were the reports in New York, anyway.
Howson shot down talk of a Foote trade, then threw in this revelation: In the next few weeks, the Blue Jackets likely will begin talks with Foote's agent about a contract extension.

Someone really needs to take a run at Tootoo. I don't want him hurt badly. I just want him hurt a little and embarrassed a lot. The fact that the midget also scored made things even worse.

The officiating the other night was nothing short of atrocious and it favored the Predators in a big way. They play on the edge anyway and when they see they can get away with it they take it up a notch. There were high sticks, cross checks and trips that went totally unnoticed.

I know that Hitch has said that they are hesitant to complain about officiating but I hope there was a call placed to Toronto after that game.

I don't mind them resigning Footer.....he's still a very good defenseman in this league, maybe not a top line guy, but he's not the 7th defenseman at this point either.

Big game tonight from Z. 2 goals and 2 assists and he actually gave up a shot at the hat trick to feed an empty netter to his line mate. That's what the guy has been getting much better at this year than last.....

Lightning place disappointing goalie Denis on waivers

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning placed backup goalie Marc Denis on waivers Friday.
Denis, who's in his ninth NHL season, has been a major disappointment since being acquired from Columbus in a June 2006 trade and signing a three-year, $8.6 million contract. He appeared in 10 games this season, going 1-5 with a 4.05 goals-against average and .859 save percentage.

Blue Jackets 4Hurricanes 1
Zherdev's two goals lead way

Sunday, December 30, 2007 3:48 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets winger Nikolai Zherdev scored two dynamic goals last night in a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, two snapshot reminders of the uncommon skill possessed by the 23-year-old.
But the most telling play, the most significant example of how far Zherdev has come in a short time, came with less than 10 seconds left and the outcome decided, when all 17,453 in Nationwide Arena were standing, hats in hand, ready to celebrate Zherdev's first career hat trick.
With the Jackets leading 3-1 and the Hurricanes goalie pulled, Zherdev had only one defenseman between him, an empty net and a hat trick.

Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire is running a distant second to Vancouver's Robert Luongo in online voting for the All-Star Game.

Alas, Leclaire fears his biggest fans have yet to cast one ballot in support of his candidacy.
"My parents have kept me updated on the results," Leclaire said. "But they haven't voted. They don't even know how to turn on a computer."

Jackets find scoring woes make it hard to get ahead

Monday, December 31, 2007 3:08 AM

The Columbus Dispatch

Four years ago, the first Blue Jackets fan ever to buy season tickets was spotted in Section 107 of Nationwide Arena with a brown paper bag over his head.
The man who had appeared in print and television ads for the Jackets before the 2000-01 expansion season said he preferred to suffer in anonymity. The franchise, meanwhile, could not hide from the symbolism.
