Rick Nash, celebrating his second goal, scored with the Blue Jackets short-handed, on a power play and at even strength into an empty net.
On the main concourse in Nationwide Arena sits a large, clear bin used to collect hats thrown onto the ice when a Blue Jackets player scores a hat trick.
It's been a while -- more than three years -- since the collection has grown.
So it was with great joy last night that arena workers got out the big brooms and gathered a hundred or so of the latest trends for the ceremonial dumping later.
Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash set off a New Year's Eve celebration with his second career hat trick, and the Jackets put an impressive stamp on 2007 with a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers in front of 16,774.

Jason Chimera and Duvie Westcott, right, of the Blue Jackets converge on the Oilers' Zack Stotini.
Like a Rt. 315 motorist suddenly finding an open lane in rush hour, Blue Jackets defenseman Duvie Westcott spotted a clear shooting angle at the last possible second.
With the score tied and time ticking away on a third-period power play, Westcott fired a low shot from the right point that zipped through traffic and hit Edmonton Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson.

LOS ANGELES -- Michael Peca didn't need much time to make his presence felt in the Blue Jackets' lineup.
Peca, who missed the previous five games because of headaches and a stiff neck, scored two goals last night in the Blue Jackets' 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings before 14,173 in the Staples Center.
It was Peca's second goal -- a redirection of a Jason Chimera slap shot with 5:18 to play -- that stood as the winner.

LOS ANGELES -- Michael Peca was back in the Blue Jackets' lineup last night when Columbus played the Los Angeles Kings in the Staples Center.
The goal now for the 33-year-old center is to stay there.
Peca's game log looks like this: missed two games (back spasms), played 13 games, missed six (groin), played 11, missed two (strained pectoral muscle), played one, and most recently missed five (headache, stiff neck).
"I don't think I can change the way I play," Peca said. "The latest one (a hit by Nashville's Marek Zidlicky) was kind of an innocent one. Everything else hasn't really been the result of physical play.

At midway point, Jackets focusing on playoff push

In 2001-02, Blue Jackets coach Dave King became so irritated by talk before the season of the playoffs that he dubbed it the "P" word and banned the players from saying it.
King couldn't control the entire organization, however, and the "P" word remained in all-too-frequent use.
In the four seasons that followed, Blue Jackets fans became hardened by the playoff promises each summer and fall, followed by the inevitable apologies each spring.

The Blue Jackets' Jody Shelley, left, and Dan Fritsche sandwich Mike Grier along the boards.
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A year ago today, the Blue Jackets walked into the HP Pavilion with puffed-out chests and an outside chance to get into the Western Conference playoff picture.
They left a few hours later with two injured veterans, Sergei Fedorov and Duvie Westcott , and an ugly loss to the San Jose Sharks that sent the Jackets spiraling the rest of the way.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- While the Blue Jackets were playing back-to-back games in Anaheim and Los Angeles last week, left winger Fredrik Modin was seeking a second opinion on his lingering back injury.
Modin, who has played in just six of the Blue Jackets' 42 games, was seen by Dr. Robert G. Watkins in Los Angeles.

Sharks right winger Steve Bernier collides with Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire during San Jose's 3-2 victory Saturday night.
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sergei Fedorov has played in 162 Stanley Cup playoff games, nearly the equivalent of two full NHL seasons.
Captain Adam Foote is right behind him with 154 postseason games.
But there's nothing either player can say or do to prepare most of the rest of the Blue Jackets for what the next few months could hold.
Even with a 3-2 loss in San Jose on Saturday in HP Pavilion, the Blue Jackets are in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
