Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Kind of random, but..

I work in a CD store in the Columbus area. A guy came in and I helped him for a bit and we talked about hockey for a little while. Turns out it was Adam Foote's father. He was one of the nicest guys ever. I found out who he was after I told him that Rick Nash was in the store earlier in the day. I didn't get to talk to Rick much, he seemed like he was ready to go before anyone else recognized him. Can't blame him, considering the place was full of people.

I know it's not a big deal, but I was excited. Nash and Foote are two of my favorite players.

By and large hockey players are the "nicest" pro athletes out there. A lot of them being from small towns and all that.

There are notable exceptions (Chris Pronger/Claude Lemieux), but by and large they are the best group of pro athletes out there in my experience.

I would agree with that. Especially with the Blue Jackets. From all the experiences I've had with them (not a ton, but enough to make a fair judgement), they've all seemed like genuinely good guys. For some reason I wasn't sure what to expect from Berard (when he was here), but he was just as cool as the rest of them.

It was probably his eye :p

Haha, I think it's because he looks really pissed off in every picture I've ever seen with him in it.

..or it could've been the eye. :wink2:

(The smiley I used is not intended to make fun of Berard's eye - just for the record!)

Power-play problems short-circuit Jackets

Wednesday, December 12, 2007 3:18 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch
On the same morning Ken Hitchcock was lamenting the lack of a power-play quarterback, someone asked the Blue Jackets coach about Scott Niedermayer's imminent return to the Anaheim Ducks.

Poor Hitchcock. He was just happy to have Duvie Westcott back in the lineup.
"(Niedermayer) will play at 100 mph, he won't wade in," Hitchcock said. "Guys will be forced to follow him."

Jiri Novotny

Center Jiri Novotny hasn't seen the hit, but he knows all about the response.

Novotny suffered a concussion Nov. 23 when he was leveled by a clean, but some say unnecessary, open-ice check by Minnesota's Aaron Voros in the closing minutes of the Blue Jackets' 4-0 win.
On Saturday night, several of Novotny's teammates challenged Voros in Nationwide Arena, with Jared Boll engaging him in a second-period fight.
"I did appreciate it," Novotny said. "It's nice knowing your teammates support you."

4-1 win tonight and they carried the play for most of the game.

Colorado looks a lot like a Detroit team or two I can think of from the previous 6 years or so, although they have less overall skill.....

When Columbus plays phyisical they are hard to beat, but they are so inconsistent with that effort who knows when it will show up?

Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena, 33, knows what it's like to be an understudy, the forgotten man who stands beyond the spotlight's glare.
That's what the 2007-08 season has been like for him.
A year after he was arguably the Blue Jackets' most valuable player, Norrena has watched Pascal Leclaire and his NHL-leading six shutouts get most of the accolades.

Michael Peca of the Blue Jackets, bottom, and Paul Stastny of the Avalanche tangle with one another at mid-ice in the first period.

Less than a week after being told not to fight, Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll was pumping his fists again last night in Nationwide Arena.

This time he was punching the air in celebration.
Boll took a slap shot that caromed off a Colorado Avalanche defenseman and into the net for what proved to be the winning goal in the Blue Jackets' 4-1 victory.

I hope I'm not breaking forum rules by saying this, but I noticed earlier in the year there was no CBJ forum specifically for the Blue Jackets... There's quite a few that have a board for the jackets but none like this board is for the Bucks:osu:... So, I made one. Columbus Blue Jackets Forums ... It's brand new, not indexed by google or anything yet and looking for some people. So, if you have a chance check it out. Of course, as a member here for a couple years, I really enjoy buckeyeplanet and will post a link there for complete Ohio State discussions -

Blue Jackets: The not-so odd couple
Though they don't share the same enthusiasm for fighting, Mandy and Jody Shelley do admire the strong character qualities that each brings to their 3 1/2-year marriage.

Despite being opposites in many ways, Mandy and Jody Shelley appear to be a perfect fit.

Mandy Shelley hates fighting.
The former fifth-grade teacher, pursuing a master's degree in school counseling, wants all disputes to be peacefully resolved.
She has never been in a physical confrontation, she says, unless you count the time irony smacked her between the eyes. That was the day, five years ago, when she met her future husband, Blue Jackets enforcer Jody Shelley.

Jackets notebook: Modin, Vyborny still on hold
Neither is expected to play again until after Christmas
Saturday, December 15, 2007 2:57 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets left winger Fredrik Modin has had a setback in his recovery from back spasms.
Right winger David Vyborny, trying to shake a hip sprain, isn't yet up on skates.
"Neither guy is going to be ready until after Christmas," coach Ken Hitchcock said.
Modin seemed to be making progress, taking part in five straight practices late last week.
On Sunday, after a "light contact" practice, he said his back felt stiff.
