collegefootballnews.com unit rankings released

bucknut11

Defense still wins Championships
Offensive unit rankings were released today. They think something's brewing at OSU...

#11 overall offense (USC #1, scUM #5)
#12 group of quarterbacks (USC #1, scUM #14)
#46 RB (USC #1, scUM #13)
#3 WR (LSU #1, USC #2, scUM #14)

3. Ohio State
As long as Ted Ginn Jr. stays at receiver to combine with Santonio Holmes, Ohio State will have one of the nation's deadliest 1-2 punches. It'll be hard to find a speedier, more electrifying pair. There are tremendous backup prospects with speed and size as Roy Hall and Devon Lyons are like tight ends with wheels. Anthony Gonzalez adds even more speed to the mix. Ryan Hamby and Rory Nicol fit the typical mold of big, productive OSU tight ends. The question becomes whether or not the Buckeyes will open it up and get this great group the ball.
#24 OL (Texas #1, USC #3, scUM #6)

DEFENSIVE rankings come out tomorrow... you're welcome

#5 overall Defense (cryami #1, PSU #2, Texas #9, scUM #15)

5. Ohio State
Nine starters return to a defense that was its typical bend-but-rarely-break self for most of the year, but it has to deal with defensive coordinator Mark Snyder moving on to take the Marshall head coaching gig. The nation's best linebacking corps leads the way with A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, Anthony Schlegel and Mike D'Andrea all sure to be making a ton of dough next year at this time. The secondary will be solid if it can find a second corner across from Ashton Youboty, and the line will be good if it can find a killer pass rusher.
#1 LB (Iowa #4, scUM #23, Texas #49)

1. Ohio State
There are some great linebacking pairs in college football this year, but no group comes close to being as good as this Buckeye corps. A.J. Hawk should get his mantle ready for the Butkus Award, Bobby Carpenter will be a multi-millionaire next year at this time, and Anthony Schlegel and Mike D'Andrea, once they both return from knee injuries, are arguably the two best middle linebackers in America. Marcus Freeman would probably start for 118 other D-I teams, but is just a backup here.
#20 DL (NCST #1, Texas #5, scUM #7)
#11 Secondary (cryami #1, PSU#2, Texas #9, scUM #30)

No, just played around with the hyperlinks. They uploaded everything, but the defensive stuff won't be linked until tomorrow. It's all dated August 9th, so I'll assume it's fresh. The comments on our position players are the same as they were when the team preview came out, that is not new. But now we know where they think we stand in comparison to everyone else.

gotcha. tho they lost a lot of credibility when they ranked UM #15... with the ineptitude they've shown against mobile QBs and the frequency of them in the BigTen this year, that's quite foolish on their part.

What a crock....

Started when I looked at the running back list and OSU was ahead of ND.
Once again, you ignore reality to reach your viewpoints
Notre Dame was 85th in rushing offense avg 127.42 per game
OSU was 70th in rushing offense avg 145.42 per game

Running Backs
The running game had major problems with its consistency last year and could struggle early on until a reliable number two runner emerges. Darius Walker is a good back, but he needs another runner to help take some of the pressure off. Travis Thomas will get the first look this fall with Justin Hoskins back in the mix after being suspended this spring. Veteran fullback Rashon Powers-Neal will likely get more carries this season.
Player to keep an eye on: Justin Hoskings, Soph. ... Running back rating: 6.5

gotta disagree with their top defenses list....miami is obviously talented, but under larry coker the last few years their D has gotten VERY shoddy and undisiplined, and their tackling has been atrocious at times...i have serious doubts in larry coker's ability to coach and fire up a team, and their defense just does not seem intense enough to me.

i'm skeptical about alabama. the only time i watched them play was in their bowl game, and minnesota was running all over them. the gophers have a good ground game, but most of the top defenses in the big ten can stop them. to put 'bama at #2 is a bit high, if they can't even stop a one-dimensional team.

usc's defense is slightly underrated. everybody always mistakenly assumes that their D must not be that good, because they are a "soft" pac-10 team. in '02 and '03, they shut down the big ten's most prolific offenses. last year, they shut down oklahoma (although i think oklahoma sucks, but that's a thread for a different day). i would put their D around number 5. they are DEFINETELY better than texas. i have no idea why people think that texas has a good D.
we will have the #1 D in the country, after the coaches are forced to play ginn both ways during the 2nd half of the iowa game, as drew tate starts to get hot.

Not to get too picky...but Pittman had a 5.3 YPG.
My bad.

As a side note, is anyone else impressed with the restraint shown by the NDchimp in posting 3 times in the same thread without mentioning SOS?

I know I am.

As to his brilliant observation about the number of carries Walker had, I guess the whole yards per carry vs total yards concept is lost on him. Who's to say Pittman doesn't keep his average at 5.3 if he got an extra 100 carries?
