There doesn’t seem to be a ‘Notre Dame’ rule like in the BCS days, but by having the first round byes only go to the top four ‘conference champions’, their current independent status would seem to make it impossible for them to get a first round bye.

I’m never looking forward to a year when ND finishes the regular season among the top four teams in the country, but if it happens under these future conditions, the reactions among the ND folks as they bitch about not receiving a first round bye should be entertaining.

So basically going from 3 games total played in the 4 team playoff to 11 games played in the 12 team playoff Adding 8 more games & 2 more rounds should make the CFP attractive to more networks
So a team could play 12 regular season games + 1 conference championship game + 4 CFP games = 17 games:

Where's all those people that argued adding an additional regular season game, a conference championship game, and/or 2 more teams in the National Championship (i.e. 2 team BCS to 4 team CFP) would be too much for 18 - 21 year old student-athletes? It would hurt academics, and the additional games would cause fatigue and result in more injures.

I can remember when the B1G teams played a 9 game regular season, no conference championship game, and only the B1G champion went to a bowl game (i.e. the Rose Bowl).

College Football Playoff expansion: Nick Saban explains why he supports a larger field

“Well, now that we have playoffs, nobody talks about anything except the playoffs,” Saban said during his weekly radio show ahead of Alabama's opener against Utah State. “So, we have a four-team playoff. Nobody gives a hoot about any bowl games anywhere. Nobody talks about them. All anybody talks about is who’s getting into the playoffs and where they’re playing and all that. So, I’m actually for expanding the playoffs. I don’t even think players. You know, going to the Sugar Bowl. When I was at LSU, we went to the Sugar Bowl the second or third year I was there. I forget which one, alright. And it was like the biggest thing that ever happened in your life–to be able to go to the Sugar Bowl. Now, we got players that opt out of playing in the Sugar Bowl. This is just in the last 15 years. Because they’re not playoffs.”

Just sayin': Besides that bullshit, (in addition to more TV money to go around) the reason is ....he believes that Alabama would still get in the playoffs even if they lose the SEC Championship game, etc.

Rematches galore

Yeah....

The first 2 rounds would have to start (at least) a week after the conference championships. The second round (at least) a week after the first round. This year the bowl games start Friday, Dec 16, 2022 (i.e. mid December).

So does that knock the losers in the first 2 rounds out of a bowl game? If nothing else, it would sure mess up the conference bowl tie-ins.

I was in favor of 8 teams, but no more than that. I really don't like the idea of byes determined by subjective measures, but we know what it's all about.

The thing is, big time CFB has been making truckloads of money since forever, insane amounts since about 1990. Yet, the folks in charge seem to think they need to constantly fuck with things until it breaks.

I feel like the committee would have reseeded the 7 and 10 seeds to 6 and 9 (or 6 and 11) to avoid rematches in the first 2 rounds, much like happens in the basketball brackets.

When you have to game the system to avoid 5/8 of the games being rematches, you've got a system that sacrifices the best part of CFB - chaos - to secure more casual viewers watching the playoffs.

All of those devastating losses to MIchigan? Or even Sparty or the occasional Purdue? Yeah, those don't really hurt that much.
