The LA schools approached the B16 as a package. If you’d like me to give Warren credit for picking up the phone… sure. That’s about all the further I’m willing to go at this point.

Actually, I do give him credit for taking the call because I know that the previous guy would have hung up due to an obsession with protecting the Rose Bowl at all costs including the interests of the schools that paid his salary.

It’s SEC Media days this week and (as is tradition), the Commissioner was the first to address the media.

It sounds like he’s done negotiating on Playoff expansion. His offer of 8 or 12 teams with 50% automatic bids was rejected last year and he’s not adjusting his position.

Realistically, it should just be Kevin Warren and Sankey negotiating this deal moving forward. The other leagues (especially the ACC) will agree to whatever is proposed.

Weird. The five teams consistently dominating recruiting have produced all 8 CFP Champions, 7 of the runners up, and put the most productive guys in the League.

This is why I’m generally against expansion. The nature of college football will largely prohibit a Cinderella run beyond perhaps an occasional 7 vs 2 upset. I just don’t see a path where teams outside the top 5 of this list can win 3 in a row in a three-round, single elimination playoff, and since the Top 10 per this list is just more SEC and Big Ten teams, they’ve already handled the de facto quarterfinal elimination by way of the conference season and CCGs.

AP Top 25 college football preseason poll: Ohio State overlooked at No. 2, Paul Finebaum says

Ohio State is ranked No. 2 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, the first edition released for the 2022 season. The Buckeyes are seen as one of the favorites to win the national championship and return a loaded roster spearheaded by Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback C.J. Stroud. Even with all that, Paul Finebaum revealed in a recent appearance on ESPN that Ohio State is still getting overlooked.

“But I think the school that we’re probably not paying enough attention to even though they’re No. 2 is Ohio State,” Finebaum said. “They are legitimate, Matt. You know that and everybody watching should know that. While we all fall in love with Nick Saban’s teams on a yearly basis, this could be the year for Ohio State.”

Did the other SEC coaches piss PAWL off or something???

I think he's just as much an SEC troll as he is an SEC homer. I think there were clips just after Ohio State beat Alabama in January 2015 of him laughing at Alabama fans.

Like him or not, Finebaum is definitely one of the best at playing his audience to get a reaction and views/clicks.

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said at last month’s Big Ten Media Days that he is “100 percent supportive of College Football Playoff expansion.” And Smith, who remains one of the Big Ten’s most influential leaders as Ohio State’s athletic director, said he thinks it is possible the CFP could expand sooner even with ESPN retaining the exclusive right to broadcast CFP games through the 2025 season.

“I think they could do that,” Smith said when asked by Eleven Warriors if he thinks playoff expansion before 2026 is feasible. “So ESPN would have (the broadcast rights) until a certain date, and then they put it out to bid, but I wouldn't have a problem with that.

“You honor the contract. If you change it and they benefit from it, I'm fine with that. And I don't see a problem with that.”

Smith said it remains a must for other media entities to have the opportunity to acquire rights to CFP games beginning in 2026. But he believes everyone will agree to that even if the playoff expands before then.

“Everyone's committed to that,” Smith said regarding CFP rights hitting the open market in 2026. “All the commissioners, presidents, everybody's committed to that. So that's done. That's a done deal. So it's all about your first question (whether the playoff could expand sooner). Will we do it faster?”

Which contenders have easiest, toughest road to College Football Playoff?

2. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (POLL RANK: SECOND)

* Games against top 10 (2): Notre Dame (8), Michigan (5)

* Games against teams ranked 11-25 (3): Wisconsin (18), at Michigan State (15), at Penn State (23)

* Games against teams ranked 26-39 (1): Iowa (28)

* The Skinny: The Buckeyes have plenty of challenges, but the good news is three of the toughest (Notre Dame, Michigan and Wisconsin) will be played in the friendly confines of Ohio Stadium … It could be a rematch with Wisconsin or Iowa if the Buckeyes can get back to the Big Ten championship game after missing it last year for the first time since 2016.

Actually it is a pretty favorable schedule; since I do not believe that ND and scUM are legit top 10 teams.

Looks like 12 teams is where we are heading.

Frustrated with the leadership of FBS commissioners, the College Football Playoff Board of Managers will meet Friday with a goal of adopting an expanded playoff bracket as soon as the 2024 season, CBS Sports has learned. The bracket would likely expand to 12 teams under the leading proposal, which was the original concept put in front of stakeholders from the CFP working group in June 2021.
