And Aresco. I've read accounts that he is still clinging to his P6 fantasy and was demanding an auto bid for the AAC. What a joke if true.

I think this is exactly what the alliance wanted.
They won’t do anything until the television rights are up for negotiation. Right now ESPN and sec have too much power and approving it now would put them in the drivers seat. Letting it expire is holding their feet to the fire.
Also it is considered the alliance vs the sec. This is only true after the big 12 finally losses Texas and Oklahoma. So they need to hold out. Plus additional teams may be poaches further weakening them. Right now the big 12 is pretending like it is going to remain the power 5.
Last point is if they can get some kind of inter conference challenge going before 2025 I think it also gives them more power to walk away and really hold the sec to their demands if they want to play ball.
Espin and sec wants this locked in right now.

My feelings exactly. The Alliance came together as a means of cockbkocking the SEC-ESPN cabal from remaking college football in their image and handing all the rights over to ESPN exclusively.

I'm just amused how all the leadup to these talks was this was the last chance to change it before the contract expires... Then now they come out we made good progress we think we can get this thing done before 2025.. Ahh so you were lying before to create a false sense of urgency to hammer your plans through... Got it

ESPN and the SEC were creating that false sense of urgency while they were negotiating with the rest of the P5 for expansion and sneaking around behind the scenes to steal the two teams from the B12.
They fucked up, got caught before the expansion was a done deal and now their counterparties have teamed up because they know the ESPN/SEC team isn't dealing in good faith.

Or perhaps it was merely to get the Texas/Okie story off of page 1.
Then, On the Field happenings proceeded to ruin the push for power 5 champs to be automatic - the PAC 12 ate itself, again, a non-power 5 went undefeated but with a huge win over ND, ND was left at the end with no spot in the ACCCG because "independence" and thus no redeeming match up (and even a victory over Pitt wasn't going to move the needle, especially when Purple Boy shoved off for Baton Rouge), then Auburn snatched defeat from an ironclad victory keeping 'Bama alive, Georgia's victory over Clemson turned out to be no big deal in the aftermath of the SECCG and the sudden realization that victories over Florida and Tennessee meant little when both went tits up mid-season. Texas got into a saloon brawl with itself. Okie kept looking for a banana peel to slip on and finally found one in Waco, and a second one in Stillwater. And then there was Ohio State which looked disorganized against Oregon, a team that then proceeded to sink in Pac 12 sand. The Bucks looked like they were over their wandering through the desert of midwest football after ripping Sparty a new asshole, only to follow it up by disappearing into the muck of Ann Arbor. In short, a wave of self-inflicted wounds left three conferences with nothing but a 1 loss Michigan which suddenly looked like a rose in the midst of the holding tank of an Oktoberfest Portapottie. 3 Conferences, 36 schools and only 1 team that could justifiably be placed in the final four. Fucked season.
And in the end, ESPN was more interested in how to satisfy the SEC than in how to get a final game with an audience outside the South. By making Alabama's games against Aggie and Auburn disappear, by ignoring the thrashing Georgia took in the CCG, They put the two schools they wanted at 1 and 2. By not pitting Bama against Georgia in round one, they ended up with a purely geographical market. Michigan against Cincinnati would have given us a game between an SEC school and a Big Ten Champ, or SEC v Cinderella.

The Pac-12 is strongly in favor of CFP expansion, and we support all of the six most-discussed expansion models that would allow for expansion to occur in time for the final two years of the current CFP agreement. These six models include:
• Qualification for the best 12 teams;
• Automatic qualifications (AQs) for the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large bids, which was the original June proposal;
• AQs for the Power 5 conferences and one AQ for the highest-ranked Group of Five champion, along with six at-large bids ("5+1+6");
• Qualification for the best eight teams;
• AQs for the six highest-ranked conference champions and two at-large bids ("6+2");
