Delany: We have discussed all formats. There is a strong consensus for a four team playoff

Delany: The presidents will also bring up the Plus One

Slive: We have a consensus on a model with some issues to be resolved

College fb fans: unless the presidents overrule commissioners who have spent hundreds of hours on this, the playoff is coming in 2014

4 super-conferences, here we come.

Rather, I think it's eventually an 8-team then 16-team format. Four 16-team super-conferences would only have 64 teams total, which is just over half of the I-A (FBS) teams and less than the total of teams in the current AQ conferences.

Isn't the whole reason for having a playoff so that we get closer to letting the best teams at the end of the year decide it on the field? If so then why all the talk that you MUST win your conference? I understand no one wants to see 2 SEC teams, etc as part of the 4 but it sure seems like we are trying to say we have a system that comes closer to finding a true champion but we are hanging on to sacred cows too. Seems rather ironic to me. The more I look at this the better the pre-BCS days look with the traditional bowls in play and let the votes come in after they are all played to do a final ranking. I guess you could let the top 2 teams at that point duke it out if need be. That would be a plus one system I guess?

then why bother to have conferences?

You gotta award conf champs somehow...but with a 4 team I don't think you can implement it, but if/when it goes to 8, then I think you gotta have a conf champ rule

Simply seed the to 8/16 BCS-ranked teams, period. Chances of a champ of a big conference (B1G, SEC, Big 12, PAC 12) not making the top 16 are next to nil.

I really don't mind having the Big10, Big 12, Pac12, SEC champs just play each other

The best team isnt always in one of those conferences...see Da U in the '80s and early '90s, and FSU late '80s through the '90s, not to mention the occasional flash in the pan team like Utah in '04 and '08.

we're heading to super conf anyways...and it'll be those 4....all the teams that need to be will be in a major conf

Sorry but this doesn't make any sense. We had conferences well before playoff talk, BCS, etc. We have conferences for obvious reasons and regardless of playoff talk we will still have conference champions, etc.

I want to preserve the regular season but I would also like some system that allows for more than 2 teams to have a shot at the title. I think most would agree with this. I simply don't see why you HAVE to win your conference if the ultimate goal is to allow more than 2 teams to "decide it on the field." As we saw this year with Bama and LSU we don't have that requirement now with 2 teams in it, why force it when talking about 4 teams?

Go back to the old days, Big vs PAC in the Rose Bowl, etc. and then take a coach and sportswriter pole to see after those games who the best 2 teams are and then have them play each other for a championship. Easy. The only way a requirement to win your conference makes any sense is if there are super conferences which I personally dread.

Did you even read what I posted? You can't limit the eligibility of the BCSCG to 64 of 120 teams. Let's see if we indeed get four (or more) "super" conferences. Everyone in the world was predicting that during the expansion clusterfuck of last year, and now expansion has come to a screeching halt.

Which remains an opinion, no matter its frequency. And not a very reliable one either:
You can't limit the eligibility of the BCSCG to 64 of 120 teams
Translated: You have to give the other 56 teams a fair shake

Reality: We don't give 52 non-BCS conf teams a shot at a title, not counting Boise or ND

You're telling me that number can't grow by 4? Especially if expansion creates even more of a disparity?

The 52 teams that have no real shot at a title, especially in the SEC era:

  1. Southern Miss ... CUSA
  2. Marshall
