College Football Playoff (2016-2017 Season)

Lines for the CCG's that potentially matter to OSU:

Washington -7.5 vs Colorado
Clemson -9 vs VT
Wisconsin -3 vs Penn State

UW, Clemson and PSU all winning would be worst case scenario as it were. Even then I think OSU is in no matter what.

In the games that don't really matter:

Oklahoma is -12.5 vs OkSU
Bama is -23 vs UF

Thinking out loud here...

SEC Champ:Alabama
B12 Champ: OU
ACC Champ: Clemson
P12 Champ: Colorado
B1G Champ:Wisconsin

1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. Ohio State
4. scUM? EWW!!!

Ohio State: beat the B1G and B12 champs. In
scUM: beat the B1G and P12 champs. In?

I think OU would have a weaker case than scUM, plus it would be a ratings wet dream for E$PN. What do you guys think? I'd hate to see the whiny weasels in the CFP, but seems like a potentially realistic scenario

I think its safe to say Ohio State is in now.

The problem for scUM is, would they really put 2 teams from the same conference that both didnt win the conference (or even their division) in? I highly doubt it.

If Clemson or Washington fall its going to either be the big 10 champion or Oklahoma if they beat Okie State.

If BOTH Clemson and Washington lost it would really cause a cluster but I stil believe it would be the B1G champ and Oklahoma

I dont really think the committee likes Washington very much but seeing they have only 1 loss compared to 2 for everyone else I doubt there is anyway they get left out if they win.

So this isnt playoff specific but it does apply to the new years 6 bowls

If WMU trips up in the MAC title game. Navy would likely assume the role as the highested rated power 5 champion if they win in the AAC title game.

Problem being Navy still has to play Army the following week (December 10). So how do they handle selecting the group of 5 participant in the new years 6 then? Seeing that the selection show is on December 4th? Would Navy just assume the spot regardless the outcome of the Army game?

23!? I wouldn't be surprised if Bama scored no more than 17. It's a pretty legit defense against a freshman qb.

I think people are expecting the cumulative effect score you see so often in Bama games.

UF can absolutely hang with them for a while and keep the score close but eventually when the offense can't move the ball at all the defense will give out.

That's true. I never thought Bama would beat auburn by 18 this year. I tend to focus on the first half offense, which is usually just a setup for the second half. I keep telling myself to be patient while I'm watching but I just end up yelling, "RUN THE DAMN BAWL!"

So some podunk losing record Canadian team just won the Grey Cup over a 15-2 squad.

Tournaments, huh.

Expansion of the playoff is a slippery slope

Just look at the FCS which is a 24 team playoff now.

6 teams with 4 or more losses were included (including a 6-5 Illinois State team that finished 4th in their conference!)

The most id ever go is 6. Give #1 and #2 byes and let 3/6 and 4/5 battle it out to play them. Im perfectly content with 4 though. Once you start going to 8+ the whole thing just starts becoming watered down.

It honestly feels like Kiffin calls the games the way he does to keep himself from getting bored.

Just depends on how much they value a conference championship. If there was ever a year for a non-champ to get in, this is it.

The conference "championship" argument would be more meaningful if we actually had that, instead of made-for-tv events involving the top team in arbitrary divisions playing unbalanced schedules.

The two teams with the best conference records are:

ACC: Clemson-Louisville (both 7-1)

B1G: Ohio State-Penn State (both 8-1)

Neither of those are the "championship" game, so if someone feels screwed afterwards they can blame their own conference. (Yes, that would include OSU if we're left out)

The PAC 12 and SEC actually managed to accomplish the feat, albeit still with unbalanced schedules.

As it turns out, the "one true champion" conference is actually right this year. They play a balanced schedule, and the top two teams - Oklahoma and Oklahoma State - just happen to be playing each other.

My two cents:

Win or lose, Bama is 1 seed.

Ohio State is not only the second most deserving team..they are the second best team. They are in, and likely 2 seed, but maybe get passed by Clemson, but that wouldn't change matchup. Clemson wins and they are in, lose they are out. Wisconsin has a better resume than Penn State. If Wisconsin wins I really see them jumping Washington. If Penn State wins, that loss to Pitt and 39 point loss may do them in.

So my predictions:

Clemson, Washington, Wisconsin win or;
Clemson, Colorado, Wisconsin win:

Alabama vs. Wisconsin
Clemson vs. Ohio State

Clemson, Washington, Penn State win:

Alabama vs. Washington
Clemson vs. Ohio State

Clemson, Colorado, Penn State win:

Alabama vs. Penn State
Clemson vs. Ohio State

Virginia Tech, Washington, Wisconsin win:

Alabama vs. Wisconsin
Ohio State vs. Washington

Virginia Tech, Washington, Penn State win:

Alabama vs. Penn State
Ohio State vs. Washington

Virginia Tech, Colorado, Wisconsin win:

Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Ohio State vs. Wisconsin

Virginia Tech, Colorado, Penn State win:

Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Ohio State vs. Penn State

But if Oklahoma loses...then you may honestly get....

Alabama vs. Michigan
Ohio State vs. B1G winner

Because you really can't put Colorado in over Michigan, with the same records and head to head. And I just don't see Oklahoma State, with their weak schedule getting in, unless the committee feels bad for their ref foul up loss, but let's be honest, why the heck do you even let Central Michigan come close to beating you. But maybe you do put Oklahoma State in over Michigan.

These are humans, so we can't be safe for sure. The only way we are out is if PSU, Wash, and Clemson win. And if this happens, all three of those teams are going to have to look AMAZING in their win, and Oklahoma probably would need to lose or look awful. Although I think that game won't affect us too much in this scenario.

Remember, as the rankings stand now neither Clemson nor Washington have a top 10 win. Ohio State has three of them.

I'd say zero chance for Okie State

even if they were to put less emphasis on the CMU loss because of the technically blown call at the end (though I think that rule is stupid) that gave CMU the hail mary chance.

They still also lost by 11 to a currently 6-5 Baylor team

They'd put Colorado in over scUM IMO before they put Okie State in. I still say there is zero chance they put 2 B1G 10 teams in the playoff that both didnt even win their division, scUM is the odd dog out due to the loss to Ohio State.
