Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

I don't know if Stoops fits. I've actually seen him mentioned on several lists. But maybe. Ohio guy, so he may have some inroads there. Isn't much of a national recruiter, so that might be dicey. scUM fans would point to his dominance of Texas as their chief rival, but I'd say that was more of Texas having modern-day John Cooper on their sideline than anything Stoops did. Would definitely fit the "big name" criteria, but while they could certainly do MUCH worse, I'd have a hard time calling it a homerun given his struggles over the last few years. To me, Harbaugh is the only "homerun" out there for them.

Agreed that Harbaugh would be a home run, but Stoops, would be a damn good hire too. He isn't perfect, but he's pretty damn good. That would certainly amp up the rivalry. Personally, I'd prefer someone more...Hoke-like.

Then you should be pleased. I have it on good authority that Michigan has entered negotiations with Hanna-Barbera.

Stoops is an Okie until he's worn out his welcome.

Hiring a proven winner like Urban Meyer or Nick Saban is basically a guaranteed path to success. However, there are only a few of those guys around, and they don't become available very often.

Here's a look at some of the successful major hires of coaches who were unknown commodities (more or less) at the time of their hiring:

Coach..........School.....Year.Hired...Prev.Exp.....Previous.Record....Age......Record.Since.Hire.....
Nick.Saban......LSU..........2000........6.yrs.......43-26-1.(.621).....48......133-32.(.806)..4.NCs
Urban.Meyer.....Florida......2005........4.yrs.......38-8-0..(.826).....41......100-18.(.847)..2.NCs
Pete.Carroll....USC..........2001........4.yrs.......33-31-0.(.516).....49.......97-20.(.829)..2.NCs
Jim.Tressel.....OSU..........2001.......15.yrs......135-57-2.(.701).....48......106-22.(.828)..1.NC
Bob.Stoops......Oklahoma.....1999........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....39......168-42.(.800)..1.NC
Les.Miles.......LSU..........2005........4.yrs.......28-21-0.(.571).....51......103-28.(.786)..1.NC
Jimbo.Fisher....FSU..........2010........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....43.......57-10.(.851)..1.NC
Mark.Richt......Georgia......2001........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....40......135-48.(.738)......
Chip.Kelly......Oregon.......2009........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....45.......46-7..(.868)......
Mark.Dantonio...MSU..........2002........3.yrs.......18-17-0.(.514).....46.......74-31.(.705)......
Gary.Patterson..TCU..........2000........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....40......130-45.(.743)......
Dabo.Swinney....Clemson......2008........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....38.......60-26.(.698)......
Bret.Bielema....Wisconsin....2006........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....35.......77-39.(.664)......
Mike.Gundy......Okie.State...2005........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....38.......82-44.(.651)......
David.Shaw......Stanford.....2011........0.yrs........0-0-0..(.000).....39.......41-12.(.774)......

The average age of the head coach hires was 42.7 years, with a range from 35 years to 51 years.

The average level of experience was 2.4 years, with 9 of the 15 coaches having had no previous head coaching experience. Jim Tressel was the only hire with significant head coaching experience, and all of his 15 years were at the FCS level. Pete Carroll had head coaching experience in the NFL, but none at the college level.

The overall record of the coaches with experience was 295-160-3, for a winning percentage of .647. Only Urban Meyer (.826 winning percentage) had an exceptional record prior to his first big-time hire.

The recipe for success seems to be hiring a coach who is in his early-to-mid 40's with lots of experience as a position coach and/or coordinator, but little or no head coaching experience. And if a candidate has head coaching experience, he does not need to be a proven winner (Carroll, Saban, Miles, and Dantonio all had mediocre records before their first big-time hire).

For the record, Nebraska just hired a 61-year old guy with a 14-year history as a head coach. He does not fit the template for success.

It will be interesting to see what Michigan does with their hire. Will they try to find a guy who fits the template, or will they go for a proven winner like Bob Stoops or Les Miles? Probably neither, knowing them.

Oh -- if people say that your real job is to lead young men & get high graduation rates & run a clean program, I WANT YOU TO LAUGH AT THEM.

NO, I WANT YOU TO STAND UP AND POINT AT THEM AND LAUGH MANIACALLY UNTIL THEY CRY AND LEAVE THE ROOM.

BECAUSE SUNDAY THEY HAD A 45 MINUTE PRESS CONFERENCE ABOUT HOW I GOT FIRED FOR NOT WINNING ENOUGH GAMES AND CHAMPIONSHIPS. AND THAT WAS IT.
