Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

I think it is. I’ll update. But with those schools it’s all plausible.

yeah it’s fake.

they think they’re getting Napier.
but an hour ago it was Grantham.
or Judge. Maybe Brady. Possibly even Calhoun.
But definitely Napier. If it isn’t Hudspeth. Judge is going to turn down the Giants to go to Starkville. No way Napier turns them down!

apparently you don't quite understand how things in Mississippi Work.

Moorhead was as Yankee as they come.
Born in Pittsburgh, went to school in New York, every job pre-MSU was all in the northeast.
them boys in backwoods Mississippi (and Starkville is as backwoods as it comes) don't care much for Yankees with zero ties to ole Dixie.

Napier is from Georgia, played at a school in So Carolina, worked at both Clemson and Bama.

to touch back on this subject a little:

now that it appears Sark is a front runner, there are several posts on a Miss State board complaining about:
“another non-southern” coach
coach that has no idea how to handle souther players
etc

now Leach being floated around as a candidate.

allegedly Sark is out (maybe).

This shit is entertaining as hell.

They are now comparing themselves to Tennessee. Except they are doing so in a negative light. As if they consider themselves above that and to even suggest that comparison is an insult.

Been a while since i last checked, but I think Tennessee still has more hardware than Miss State does.

Is this really an issue? I mean, Ohio State has had success with a good amount of southeastern, Texas, Cali players. Or is it just more of a pride thing? Saban has definitely taken kids from Cincinnati (unlike most posters here it is not in Kentucky) and other northern areas. Maybe this is what is holding back Miss. State...well that and being in Starkville, Mississippi. The regional aspect of the sport isn't what it used to be. Minus the special powers of Ohio kids which I believe you and @Fishhh would attest to these days.

my personal opinion:

I don't think it's really a requirement, but I do see where there could be some benefits (but not in the way they're saying it). And even then, I don't see where it would be a tremendous advantage to justify eliminating candidates.

1. Mississippi State draws the vast, vast, vast, majority of their players from Mississippi. And for the most part are not going to land a name brand superstar head coach that can point to skins on the wall as a way to get players to buy in. But if the guy has ties to the region, he may be able to relate to these kids and reach them a little better if there is at least some familiarity of culture.

2. The biggest benefit would probably be in recruiting. Having ties and experience in the area most likely means you also have contacts and relationships with area high schools and coaches. Being a familiar face to the recruits can't hurt either vs some guy from the West Coast they've never seen who can't even pronounce their hometown.

3. familiarity of your opponents (maybe). Like Mullen going there from Florida. Was already familiar with the lay of the land. Knew who he was going up against, their styles and tendencies, etc. Seeing them every week I would think gives you half a step or so on a new guy that has only seen film.

Mississippi State is not a school that can really sell themselves nationally. Hell, they not especially great at selling themselves regionally either. So I can see where they would maybe prefer a guy from the region who is more likely to understand that part of the gig and know how to work around it.

And I would think being in Starkville is a huge detriment to them. And I don't mean that as a knock on the town itself. It's a cute little town. But it's literally in the middle of nowhere and not close to anything. You're at least an Hour drive from the nearest interstate. And there isn't any big city anywhere nearby that's close driving distance to help attract people either. It's literally the only school on the conference that is more than 20 minutes or so from an interstate. Oh and to top it all off, Nick Saban's juggernaut at Alabama is only an hour and a half drive away.
