Clifford suspended (Washington OK to play) In Championship

In defense of ESPN (god help me if I ever type THAT again) there were a lot of people breaking this story early. Even the insiders here (elitists that they are :p) were hearing the same thing.

I wonder if Tressel is going to bring the hammer down on whoever the media (and insiders) was hearing it from, as it seems likely that there was only one source for the information before it turned into a wildfire.

At this point, with so little information available on what even happened, I don't know that it is fair to assume that DWII screwed up but avoided a suspension. With a guy that has never been in trouble before, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that his name was erroneously brought into the story in the first place.

Then you will hate the Dipatch article this AM.

I heard this morning on 1460 that he is appealing the suspension. Hopefully everything comes out fine though.

Can college athletes "appeal" suspensions:huh:

Sounds to me like they got the story wrong in the first place and now they are covering up their mistake with some bogus appeal story. (at least a man can dream, can't he).

It looks like DW will only know his status past Christmas.

OSU's mum on DB's ban

Washington's status uncertain for bowl

Friday, December 21, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- When the Ohio State Buckeyes departed campus for Christmas break on Wednesday, they believed they'd be playing without one of their starting cornerbacks in the BCS national championship.
Twenty-four hours later, that wasn't the case.
Thursday afternoon, the OSU athletic department issued a statement that backup freshman defensive back Eugene Clifford had been suspended from practice and the Jan. 7 title game with LSU because of a violation of team rules. But the release mentioned nothing about starting corner Donald Washington, whose apparent suspension had been the news of the day on Thursday.

The Dispatch article isn't consistent with the report on rivals.com that Clifford will be the only player suspended for the title game.

BuckeyeGrove.com - OSU confirms suspension of Clifford

I think the author of that Dispatch article got his information from a player.

The player was obviously misinformed. I think he is still using that same source, and the player isnt sure what is going on so the author won't commit either way.

Another reason that I think you're correct here is that the Rivals article says at the bottom that OSU athletic communications contributed to the report. I think that gives the Rivals report more credibility than the Dispatch article.

When the official word is "Clifford is suspended. There are no further suspensions." How does that mean "Washington might be suspended?"

The Dispatch article goes even further, though--it at least implies that Washington IS suspended, not just that he might be suspended; indeed, it reports that he has appealed his suspension. It seems to me that the article is trying to save face as a result of jumping the gun yesterday and then being wrong.
