So, the interesting thing, I think if Lindor's contract was to expire this year (and the Indians didn't trade him) I think they would probably QO him, and it might be in Lindor's best interest to take it... I guess once we get the lay of the land in Dec/January we might know that answer.
The Indians aren't the only team that will take a massive loss... and last offseason, teams were finally throwing big $ at (some) FA's.... not really relating to Lindor, I am curious to see what the market situation is... it gets complicated for Lindor too, Cory Seager, Xavier Baez are going to be FA's too... Carlos Correa I think maybe as well (but he's never healthy).. the Red Sox would probably like to move Xander Boegarts (I can't ever spell that kids name)
As for Santana, My guess is... as a larger picture, there will be a lot of club option/marginal FA guys that re-up for one year with their current teams cheap... Not saying he will necessarily but, I have a hard time believing the market for guys like him at 17mm will be there. (Cesar Hernandez at 6.25, not a bad deal at all), I just feel like the teams that are borderline postseason teams this year will be quite happy to try to be borderline again next season if they can do it for the same $.
Random: Anyone feel like Reyes and to a lesser extent Naylor were Travis Hafner pickups... (Where the Rangers had Texiera and Blalock -- plus Arod, etc and the dude just couldn't play a position well enough... if anyone is bored, this is back when I used to actually follow baseball, go look and see the lineup the Rangers finished last place with in 2003.... then look at the pitching staff.... woooo weee what a greasefire). So, my concern here is that Naylor can't actually play a position, which is fucked up enough, but, that doesn't fly in Terry Francona land... although, how well have 75 really athletic OF's that can't hit gone? So so at best. Problem is, too many of those guys isn't good. Hafner really handcuffed the Tribe because he literally couldn't play 1B. Naylor's history in the OF, is... bad, lets hope its due to lack of reps. (Shitty part is, and of course a lot of other teams will have this problem in various ways, we only get to see him for 25 odd games... where if this Trade was July 31 in a normai season, its like 60.)
Well, whatever, we're trending toward at least 3 postseason games, so... there's that I guess.
I cannot see the Indians picking up Santana's option for 17.5 and I really do not know how far he would go down to re-sign. I mean really think I can do is walk and play a good 1B. A guy who plays his position should be a 20 HR and close to 100 RBIs. I just cannot see many teams going after him unless he is willing to take a major reduction in salaryIf Carlos resigns for cheaps after the Indians decline to take up his $17.5M team option for 2020 it might be the only time that occurred. I can’t recall it ever happening but one of y’all on BP might think of a time? Free agents like Omar, Michael Brantley and Kip all said they never had any discussion about a cheaper deal brought up by the Indians when they left.
Franimal has been on a tear this season. If he can keep up anywhere close to this production, then he is the future leader of the offense. The Bauer trade will turn out to be a huge win for Cleveland if Reyes is an all-star.
I have been thinking more about what will happen with Lindor. He is the face of the franchise and as close to the perfect player as it gets. Maybe they will feel compelled to not trade him based on bad PR and the fact that there is literally no reason to trade him other than preparing for life after he departs in FA, which they have already worked towards with some of their trades. They did let Brantley, who was in kind of a similar situation, to get to free agency instead of trading him. Plus clearly their chances to be a contender in 2021 are better with Lindor. Starting to think they keep him another season after all.
Santana, I don't see the logic in keeping him and paying big $ unless he really gets going. I wouldn't even extend a QO to him at this rate.
Considering he is going to be 35 next season, the fact that he is not even a league average hitter this season, and the Dolan tendency to be cheap, it makes little sense to bring him back when they can allocate the $17M or whatever to a legit hitter. The Qualifying Offer amount for the upcoming offseason is agreed to be the same as last year, $17.8M. There’s absolutely no chance Santana would decline that offer and, if the Indians want to pay Santana in that neighborhood they can save $300,000 by just picking up their team option (with the added benefit of then still being in position to use the QO (or whatever takes its place under the new CBA) after the ‘21 season.
Since Frankie’ not (so far) represented by Scott Boreass, I doubt he’s going to hit the market demanding a number so silly teams will seriously look at other players. Meaning: he’ll be the number 1 choice of any team looking to improve at SS. The number of other players on the market won’t change the fact that he’s not staying in Cleveland.
Naylor? I really know nothing about him. If he’s better with the glove than Jhonny Damon was in Cleveland Naylor can play LF. He looked adequate at 1B for a couple innings Tuesday night.

Maybe the Indians can teach Reyes to play first base if they let Santana walk. If not, he probably is a serviceable leftfielder the way he can hit and they can play Naylor at first or the other way around.
Hand awfully shaky in the top of the ninth but came through.Josh Hader hadn’t given up a hit all season coming into the 9th inning of tonight’s game. Naturally, he gave up a lead-off double to Oscar Mercado and then a game winning single to César Hernández. Go Tribe!
