Cleveland Indians (official 2012 season)

Taking stock of Indians roster

According to this writer who takes stock of the Indians roster regarding who will be back next year it like the Indians will not have a first baseman and only Michael Bradley in the outfield. He also does not think that Masterson is a #1 starter but gives no solution to that problem.

With their past being what it was and their present being what it is, let?s look ahead to the Indians? upcoming offseason, and which players will be back and which won?t.

Some of these are easy calls, both positive and negative. Some of them are iffy. Some will depend on what the team does during the winter regarding trades and (cough-cough) free-agent signings.

As we sit here today, knowing only what we know now, here is a look at the 40-man roster, and (in parentheses following each player?s name) the percentage chance of each player being on the 40-man roster next year.

Hoynsie agrees:

If nothing else is accomplished in this lost season by the Indians, one thing has been proven: Matt LaPorta cannot play first base in the big leagues.

In case you missed it, with 2 out and a runner on 2nd in the 12th inning LaBusta meekly waived at a grounder then, instead of covering 1B he slowly wandered toward a cutoff position. But, Kipnis got the grounder so then LaBusta tried to get to 1B before the batter, only missing him by a couple steps while keeping his back to the guy rounding 3B and heading home for the winning score.

The Indians have been doing a lot of surveys the past couple months, way more than I recall in prior years. Sadly, their survey focus matches what we see on the field: nearly all of their questions are about the "experience" at the ballpark and very, very little concerns the actual games.

I've come to the conclusion that they actually believe that it is more profitable to keep adding crap like wiener races and middle inning fan prize contests than adding better players and winning games.

it's cheaper to throw out a handful of free t-shirts with a red C on them than to pay good players.

Yep. There were some good teams and good times from about '94-'07, but that's all a distant memory. Back to being a laughingstock for the foreseeable future.

Please do not let him put on an Indian's uniform again. I beg of you Cleveland management.

Travis Hafner, who in all likelihood is in his last two weeks in an Indians uniform, is expected to return to action sometime during the six-game homestand that began Tuesday night.

"Hopefully we'll get him back sometime during this homestand," said Manager Manny Acta. "We'll find some at-bats for him."

Hafner hasn't appeared in a game since Aug. 5. He was placed on the disabled list Aug. 6 with lower back inflammation. He also spent all of June on the DL with a knee injury. As a result of his injuries, Hafner has only had 201 at-bats this season, and will finish the year with the second-fewest at-bats of his 10-year career in Cleveland.

Hafner this year is hitting .239 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI. The Indians hold a $13 million club option on his contract for 2013, but they are expected to pay the $2.75 million buyout on the option year, which will turn the 35-year-old former slugger into a free agent.
Hafner stinks But Manny says:shake:
"If you're fine physically, you should play, said Acta. "Were obviously a much better team with him in the lineup."

Nice little subtle dig there.

I find these quotes in the PD today perhaps the most telling comments regarding Manny and his thoughts on the LaPorta and the team.

manny acta is basically saying point blank that the front office and ownership has given him shit to work with. and he's doing it to the point that he doesn't give two shits if he's fired or not. while he may not be an all-star manager, he's hardly been dealt a good hand by this organization. so, i don't blame him for running his mouth one bit. We'll see how the front office handles this offseason.

Rumors are rampant here that he is gone, they are just looking for a replacement. Last night some TR guys were discussing a rumor they were talking to Terry Francona, which might be the worst idea ever for this franchise (nothing against Francona personally, but terrible fit). I think they have probably talked to him...about winter theme parks, but that's about it. There is no way he comes to this baseball graveyard anyway.

Francona is a "name" manager. There's no way any manager with any kind of options (this includes remaining a broadcaster) is going to take this job. You have an empty minor league system, a dumpster fire of a roster, a bumbling front office, and ownership that will not spend money to improve. I can't imagine anybody looking at this job, and saying "sure, I'll give it a shot". Maybe Sandy takes it. Maybe they need to start looking for "Lou Brown".
