Cleveland Indians (2019 Thread of Indifference)

Yeah fuck it, this team ain’t winning a WS. But, anyone who lived through trading back to back Cy Young Winners and the Kilimanjaro of Suck that was 2009-2012...this team is at least entertaining to watch and wins more often than not.

But they had sweet Lou Marson! And the legendary top prospect Matt LaPorta

They weren't operating like a small-market franchise until they traded Bartolo Colon. That trade ended up good from a talent standpoint over the long-term, but it signified that they were not intending to pull all the stops while trying to win anymore. The Colon trade was a bad one from a fan standpoint as it meant they were trading the present for the future, and they haven't stopped acting like a small market team ever since. Tito's success has at least forced them to raise up the payroll a bit more.

Unfortunately, this year it would take them being very lucky to beat the Astros. Tito will likely start the "old reliable" Kluber in spite of his lack of success in the playoffs the past couple of years, which will put them at a disadvantage. But you are right they are at least playing well and are an entertaining bunch.

Kluber started a double-A game tonight. This was his second rehab start. I haven't read any definitive timetable, but wouldn't be surprised if he is in the rotation by the end of next week.

If I were the Indians FO with the mandate to limit payroll, I would absolutely trade Kluber. I would have traded him before this season, and so of course I would trade him before next season. Even when healthy, the last couple of years he is not really performing along the lines of his cost for a penny-pinching owner to feel like the investment is worthwhile. This team has proven anybody they promote from the minors can help them get wins against the crappy teams which litter their schedule, and the reality is Kluber has lost his ability to shut down the better lineups on any consistent basis.

The Twins are now entering the first of two remaining extended soft patches in their schedule. They play 4 at Texas, 7 against the Tigers, and 6 against the White Sox from tomorrow through September 2. The Twins finish the regular season with 3 vs CWS, 3 at Detroit, and 7 against KC. The Tribe is going to have an uphill battle keeping pace with the Twins due to the schedule helping Minnesota down the stretch. The rest of this regular season, the Twins play 30 games against bad MLB teams while the Indians have 19. I think Cleveland is playing slightly better ball than Minnesota right now, but this race is gonna go down to the wire.

Tribe lost to the Yanks yesterday, but Civale had another strong start. With his command and the way the ball moves on his pitches, Civale has the potential to be the next top tier starter to come out of the Tribe system. Crazy they had Clevinger come up in 2016, Bieber in 2018, and now Civale. That is three pretty darn good starters to come up in four years. Plesac struggled today but he has been pretty decent thus far. All those young starters is a big part of what made Bauer expendable.
