Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

on the Ubaldo trade......

he better be damn good......giving up our 2 best pitching prospects for him.......one being a stud lefty prospect (we really need a left handed starter)

i'm gonna verge to say that Pomeranz goes on to be a stud and Ubaldo is merely average for the Tribe, seems like our luck

Reading a lot of stuff from IPI and I agree with pretty much all of it:

One thing to take away from the Ubald-O deal, the FO clearly thinks they're in contention now. That should mean they'll make it an offseason priority to improve, so maybe some decent FA moves are on the horizon. Ubald-O wanted an extension this offseason, so maybe the FO works an extension for him and makes him happy.

Scott Barnes emergence in C-bus makes the loss of White-Pomeranz less painful, plus there's already a lot of SP depth at or near the ML level.

One thing's for sure, we're seeing a FO that is MUCH more aggressive than they've been in years, and they're determined to make this team better/competitive by supplementing the products of the farm with veterans. That makes me happy.

I guess after reading some things and thinking about it the Indians probably made the right move because their window is only good for 2-3 more years.

The only big problem I have with the trade is that we probably could have used one of those guys along with a veteran or a couple prospects to get a right-handed bat. I know we have pitching in the minors but I don't see any good right-handed run producers close to the top level.

The trade said to me 2 things: 1, they are very serious about the 3 year window from 2012-2014, and 2, they have more or less conceded this year, because they didn't get a bat. I agree with it though, if they couldn't get a guy like Pence get a top flight pitcher and not a second-hand bat. If they can get one (or two) in the offseason, they will be primed to compete for a division title next year. But Ubaldo would have to go something Doyle Alexander-like (9-0) down the stretch for that trade to really impact this year much.

I wouldn't say they've conceded yet. They didn't get a bat yet, but there's still time. I don't know what happened with Ludwick, but I'm glad he ended up elsewhere.

If they're in it by the end of next week, they could try and get Carlos Lee through waivers or something, but let's face it, they have 7 at Boston and the Rangers...they could be 6-8 out by then.

I suspect they will be. But then again, detroit can never get their shit together long enough to pull away, so who knows...
