Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

cleveland was a legit contender in the AL central when everyone was healthy, and some guys were playing better than normal. that's it.

some folks need to remember that this entire season was going to be an exhibition for which parts were in place for cleveland's window in 2012 and thereafter.

what has happened for the good:

masterson stepped up to be a FOR pitcher.
carrasco has shown glimpses of being a legit #3 pitcher in a good rotation, probably #2 for cleveland due to fausto.
alex white looked respectable after being fast-tracked to the bigs.
some guys in the bullpen have been very good.
chisenhall got fast tracked, and has looked decent enough.
michael brantley has looked like he can be a decent leadoff batter and play a respectable right field.
astrubal is a stud.

the bad:
fausto carmona totally shit the bed.
grady sizemore died.
carlos santana has refused to make any adjustments at the plate and has been shitty.
travis buck has been a turd.
alex white basically got shelved for the season.
choo started off rotten, started to come around, and then got hurt.
matt laporta made no strides at the plate. if he can ever manage to not get hurt, he's showing to at best be a .250 and 17HR guy.
jason donald's inability to stay healthy has permitted orlando cabrera to exist on this roster.

To follow up here with a my IMO...LaBusta is just that...a bust. Sucks, but it happens. I think the long range future is Santana at 1B and Chen at C. That leaves LaPorta out in the cold, and I think I'd be pretty okay with that. I just hope the FO doesn't get bullheaded about LaPorta and sees him for what he is: Ben Broussard minus a pretty good BA. Santana needs to unfuck himself. He shows flashes for a few games, then looks totally lost for another 10-15. Getting him together has to be a priority.

The other good news is that Pomeranz is looking really good and Akron and should be ML ready sometime in 2012.

Per Twitter:

Indians GM Chris Antonetti tells Rizz there are no untouchables in Indians system. Everyone available for the right return, and that the Dolans have told him to "Be aggressive. Dollars will not be a limiting factor."

I hope that's just GM speak, and I think it is, because I can't see them letting Pomeranz and/or White go for anybody available. Chis already is a part of the team, so I can't imagine him going anywhere. I wouldn't be upset to see Kipnis a part of a package for Pence, but I doubt that as well. I don't like Upton at all, but if he could be had at a reasonable price, I wouldn't object.

My dream would be something like Kipnis/Weglarz/McAllister for Pence...don't know how feasible that is, though...

If they make a move for somebody like Ludwick or Fukodome for anything other than rubbish, just for the sake of making some kind of move, I'll be disappointed.

Well... "the right return" being the GM speak part of it.

Don't really like Upton either, I mean, I'm wondering if Milton Bradley has a job. But, in reality, sometimes guys just need a change of scenery. Eh, who knows... see what happens.

Yeah, like I said above, if a package including Kipnis could net somebody like Pence, I'd be pretty okay with that. I think Kipnis could be pretty good (not Baerga '92-'95 or Robby Alomar good, but pretty good), but middle IF guys aren't as much a premium as, say, 3B or starting pitchers. I think a future rotation of Masterson-Pom-White-Carrasco looks too good to pass up. Pence is the big name out there, and I'm wondering if he'd really be worth pieces like White or Pomeranz or Chis (who will be here another 5-6 years) for a guy who will likely (read: will) jet after 2013.

I don't like Upton. The Milton Bradley comparison is a good one. Very talented player, but a fucking asshole who will inevitably wear out his welcome in a year.

I hope they dont trade for Upton....what is he going to help? hes hittin .229 (he hasent hit over .250 since 2008) and strikes out a lot.......basically would be trading for another Sizemore but without the constant DL trips

Carrera with a nice diving catch to rob Torii Hunter of a base hit.....with his speed and ability to get on base, I know he made that error against the White Sox, but still looking like a nice steal for a rental of Russel Branyan (thanks again Seattle)
