Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

I think it's becoming pretty plain to see that another bat in the OF is going to be needed is this team is serious about making it to the postseason. I don't know how feasible it is, but I really like the idea of Hunter Pence. He's a good hitter with good power and under contract at a reasonable salary until 2013. If he could be had for some combination of Kipnis or Phelps, and some pitching prospects like McAllister, then I say do it. The only guys in the system that should be "untouchable", IMO, are Pomeranz and White (and I guess Chis). There's a wealth of other good prospects, but the depth is so that dealing any of them for legitimate help wouldn't hurt.

**reading back, I see tsteele already brought this up...but yeah, if he can ge had without mortgaging the farm, do it.**

I guess I can blame last night's loss on Valbuena but I won't. I will blame this on the coaching staff. They have a bench coach who is supposed to position players and why the hell they had Valbuena right in front of the warning track I will never know. That was the problem. It wasn't about angles or anything else it was simply because he was not given proper signals from the dugout.

I also think that Acta deserves part of the credit for the loss for taking Masterson out of the game. I know that Masterson said all the right things after the loss put the last pitch that he threw was clocked at 94 mph. He could have pitched the entire eighth-inning and came back and pitched the ninth but I guess I can blame last night's loss on Valbuena but I won't. I will blame this on the coaching staff. This game really hurt and I can tell by the responses in this thread that I am not the only one who was really upset about this game in particular.
We can throw blame all over the place, but I don't see one place in that entire post that broaches the actual problem last night...they mustered one run on five hits. You can blame Acta for not letting Masterson go (I have had issues with that in the past as well), you can blame Perez for doing his best Borowski impression, you can blame Acta for sending [strike]Andy Marte[/strike] Valbuena out there, you can blame the position coaches for not positioning him correctly, you can blame Valbuena for llooking like Steve Balboni shagging flies, but it's all missing the real culprit...the offense sucked balls, AGAIN.

On a more positive subject, I wonder if Adam Miller could find himself in Cleveland sometime before too long if he gets to C-bus and lights people up like he has been. With the BP looking to be on a downward arc, I wouldn't be too surprised. That would be awesome on many levels.

Bullpen coming back to earth...could spell death...

the bullpen was bound to have a down cycle. they simply couldn't maintain that level of pitching over an entire season. it's pretty unreasonable to think that they could. what amplifies it is the fact that for the most part, the starting pitching can't seem to eat up enough innings without putting a lot of pressure on the pen.

the bullpen in 2007 was thought to be great. why? in large part due to CC, good Fausto, and Westbrook, and even to a lesser extent, paul byrd consistently going 6+ innings and not getting rocked.

when a pen has to hold a one run lead, or keep the score tied for 3+ innings, it's going to fail more times than not.

but long story short, this team needs another bat in the worst way. no choo, no grady, and carlos santana is battling matt laporta for the "most confused hitter at the plate" award.

Not to get into the bucklion/tsteele IF/OF argument. Half of me is thinking in the short term they should see if Kipnis IS the answer in the outfield (or one of them, I honestly think depending on how long Sizemore is out, we need 2... and some of you will say, "well he's been out since '08-- I don't disagree) anyway, point is, this is the first year (or second?) that he's played 2B.

What the heck....

At any rate, the Astros are going to want the whole farm for him... I would if I were them. Word is that White, Pomeranz, Chisenall and Kipnis are untouchable... Not knowing what the Astros need (meaning I don't know what they have/don't have as far as almost major league ready talent. But they're gonna want a lot for him, and if they have to keep him, oh well. Robbie Alomar trades don't happen anymore, but, they're gonna want one of the 4 untouchabels, a high level and a low level guy and maybe a PTBNL.

Honestly, If they're gonna move one of the untouchable guys, they're gonna need a package deal, so, I'd say we're gonna get Ludwick AND Aaron Harang in a deal with the Padres. Something like that. If it's just a bat... who the heck knows. I love how the Royals say they won't trade Melky... well, I'd rather have him right now than anyone if Sizemore's going to be out a while.

Francouer is an option, he plays good defense and is the right bat in the right spot in the lineup. They need a CF, but there aren't many of those out there that anyone either wants or will trade other than Melky. Pence will be expensive, probably in Ubaldo territory (Colorado is dangling him hoping someone overpays) so I just don't know if this season is worth mortgaging the farm when they have been so inconsistent.

i just hope we do something as far as a trade goes to try and stay in contention the rest of this year and make a serious run at the playoffs...its not a given that next year we are going to contend again...all signs point to yes but as many of you know the indians for the past 8 years have done well during down years and during years where we are supposed to be good we end up falling on our face...whos to say next year asdrubal has another year like this...hafner is having a great year this year but next year who knows...i hope the indians make a serious push for Hunter Pence...hes young, isnt owed that much and is a great outfielder and a right handed bat...he can be had for some prospects from what ive read...the indians have plenty of talented prospects who may or may not end up to be anything...look at laporta...he was a supposed guarantee to be an all star...i say we give Houston anything but kipnis, pomeranz, chisenhall and alex white...ive read where houston may want one of these guys but some over at indians prospect insider say if we have to give one of these 4 then move along...if i had to part with any of these i would with kipnis or pomeranz because they are more question marks then anything...but pence is a proven commodity and one that would bolster our outfield for the future...an outfield where we have a serious lack of depth in our farm system...pluto wrote that the last outfield prospect we had that did anything was manny ramirez...that tells you how long it has been since a outfielder came up in our farm system without trades such as sizemore...i would love pence in this lineup and i seriously hope we are considering taking him on

Grady Sizemore underwent abdominal surgery Thursday in Philadelphia to repair a sports hernia.

Sizemore is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks following the surgery. The Indians projected that he would likely have to miss four weeks with his knee injury anyway, so they felt it made sense to address the hernia issue at this particular time. He's far from a sure thing the rest of the way, so look for the Indians to step up their efforts to land an outfielder before the trade deadline.

Indians prospect Jason Kipnis could be promoted to the major leagues as early as Friday.

The 24-year-old Kipnis has hit .281/.363/.485 with 12 home runs, 12 stolen bases and 54 RBI in 90 games this season at the Triple-A level. The Indians are likely to hand him starting second base duties immediately, which would mean a dip in playing time for veteran Orlando Cabrera.

I find the timing curious given that Kipnis is in the midst of a pretty significant slump (4 hits in his last 39 AB's and hitting .154 in July). I'd rather see a guy getting the call when he's hot and his confidence is up. Jason Donald is scorching hot right now, I wonder why he didn't get the promotion.

Trade bait maybe? It's hard to say at this point.
