Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

There HAD to be another option. If anything if you have to use someone that plays no outfield put a guy like Hanahan out there who can catch a fly ball and knows something about positioning, and put Valbuena in the infield where he only moderately sucks balls. You can't put your most green guy out there in a position where he is going to cost you the game, and left field playing a step in front of the fans in the front row did just that. I don't blame Valbuena, I blame shitty management.

Why would Hannahan have been a better option? Neither he nor Valbuena are outfielders, though Valbuena at least played left field at some point last year (according to Baseball Reference). With Brantley being out and Buck getting hurt, the only other options were Hafner and Chisenhall, so not really options at all. Obviously Valbuena isn't the only one responsible for the loss, and obviously he was playing out of position, but he absolutely had to make a better effort to make the catch than he did. Who cares if he misses it, same result as letting it drop.

Because he has more baseball experience, he understands angles and positioning and strategy better. Who do you want out of position, a vet who has been around and seen it all or some rook who can't even stick in the majors for any length of time? Valbuena had that deer in the headlights Please God don't hit the ball to me look on his face, and he was clueless after the game in the dugout. Hanahan is not an outfielder, but the situation wouldn't have overwhelmed him, and I dare say he might have done a halfway competent job as a stopgap measure. Give me someone who understands baseball in that situation every time.

this logic simply doesn't fly. sandy alomar understands baseball, stick him out there. hannahan is the slowest player on the team outside of hafner and laporta, and has never played an inning of outfield in the last 20 years. Valbuena was the best option out there, period.

this game was lost with the shitastic offensive performance put up yesterday, and nothing more.

Can't disagree much with that thought but the bottom line was that that same shitastic offense handed the ball to the closer in the bottom of the night to face an equally shitastic offense.

i didnt see the game but i was listening to the bottom of the 9th inning on satelite radio and the minnesota announcer said the indians were playing no double's defense and then cuddeyer hits a double....how did that work?....tough loss but only perez's second blown save

Outfield was playing deep... and Valbuena ridiculously deep (I think, as has been noted, due to his lack of experience there, they wanted to make extra sure that it didn't get over his head, especially with the RH power hitter up)

Well... Rage goes inside, breaks Cuddyer's bat and Cuddyer just sort of loops it over 3rd base down the left field line, so now, Valbuena has a really long way to go to get it. So far in fact that the amazing thing is not that he got a double but mauer could go from 1st to 3rd on the place on the field nearest to 3rd. (Though, with the vantage point from first and the trajectory of the ball, he didn't need to hold up, it was obvious that it was going to get down)

Yeah, he did such a swell fucking job. :roll1:

Are you one of those people who thinks SEC speed is all that matters in football too? Speed didn't do shit to help Valbuena last night.

so, your logic is that slow with no experience playing the outfield is better than fast with little outfield experience. got it.

My logic is someone who understands the fundamentals of defensive baseball is better than someone who can't even play their natural position at an average major league level.

that's akin to saying an ear, nose and throat doctor can perform brain surgery because he knows the fundamentals of medicine. your entire theory is totally flawed.

Actually it's nothing like that, but whatever. Your theory appears to be if you are fast, you are a good outfielder, so if we signed Usain Bolt and Carl Lewis we would win 18 World Series in a row. But it doesn't matter what you or I think anyway.

Back to the game, the Indians have taken the lead 3-2...hopefully Tomlin can stay strong with it.
