Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

With the lack of pitching in MLB these days, it does not seem like the Tribe really got much for Laffey...a 25 year old 2B who's spent the last two seasons stuck at AA. Wonder if this was done as a favor to Laffey...or is sending him back to Wedgie really punishment?

He seemed to have a slim chance of making the Opening Day roster with the Tribe and by getting traded now it increases his chances with Seattle. Laffey was a total team player, bouncing from pen to starter whenever the Tribe asked.

the move was done to clear a 40 man roster spot for Durbin.....

Laffey is what he is a #5 (maybe a #4 on a not so good team) starter or long reliever, not in the Indians long term plans, guess they figured might as well get something for him instead of leaving him to sit in AAA

If we got a pound of bologna, a case of turtle wax and 2 packs of 1987 Topps baseball cards for Laffey we'd be doing well. I liked the kid as recently as last year, but it became clear he isn't a big league pitcher.

sounds like we got a pretty decent prospect in return...i will take it

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2011/03/cleveland_indians_trade_left-h.html

Matt Lawson, 25, will report to minor-league camp. He hit a combined .293 (134-for-458) with 75 runs, 26 doubles, nine homers and a .811 OPS at Class AA Frisco and Class AA West Tennessee last year. He played 118 games, most of them at second base. He also played short and in the outfield.
The Mariners acquired Lawson from Texas in last year's Cliff Lee trade. He was one of four players the Mariners acquired in the deal.
Before the trade, Lawson hit .277 (81-for-292) with 48 runs, 16 doubles, seven homers, 34 RBI and a .809 OPS at Class AA Frisco with Texas. After the deal, he hit .319 (53-for-166) with 27 runs, 10 doubles, two homers, 22 RBI and a .816 OPS at Class AA West Tennessee.

But the funny thing is that Laffey was a part-time starter last year and here we end up getting a minor-league player for him. However, I do like bologna. Used to eat it while sipping a Carling's:)

THat was only because there was literally nobody else to fill a spot. This year, those spots will likely be filled by the younger guys who they were allowing to spend more time in Columbus. Laffey was no help to this team anymore other than being the token soft tosser on the staff.

I said major league baseball, not the Indians

In seriousness I do think Lawson is a reasonable prospect, and it's about all we could have hoped for. I guess I was a bit strong, but Laffey to me is a funny case I guess. In his career he is 18-21 with a 4.41 ERA, 128 BB, 155 Ks. To me that's nothing to write home about, especially after watching him pitch so many times, but MLB is filled with journeyman pitchers making millions of dollars with similar types of numbers. I hope the best for him, maybe he can get a new start in Seattle, where their pitching behind King Felix is worse than the Indians.

Indians sign 1B Nick Johnson as a non0roster invitee...

http://deepleftfield.com/2011/03/07/indians-sign-nick-johnson/

Optimism is in the air in Goodyear. It was announced on Monday that the Indians have signed veteran infielder Nick Johnson who spent an injury filled season on the Yankees in 2010.
Johnson had played for the Yankees, Nationals, and Marlins over the span of his career. He is primarily known as a first baseman and can help provide some depth at first. He is invited to Spring Training as a non roster invite, but he will likely make the team. If not at the beginning of the year, he will sometime during the season.
He is a lifetime .270 hitter with 91 career home runs. Johnson can help mentor the young Matt LaPorta who can use some guidance.
The only problem for Johnson is his right wrist, which he recently had surgery on. Once the wrist heals, Johnson can compete for a spot on the roster.
This signing shows that the Indians front office is not afraid to take risks. On a very young team, signing an injured veteran is not usually seen. Three veterans have already been signed this off-season in Austin Kearns, Orlando Cabrera, and Johnson.
The new regime under Chris Antonetti is off to a very good start in regards to free agent signings

I like the move. It's the type of low-risk/high reward moves this team is gonna have to live on for the time being. Once his wrist gets healthy, he's the type of high OBP hitter that is always good to have around. Not likely to be a difference maker by any means, but good kind of guy to have around...especially on such a young team.

Plus, by the time he is ready to start playing, the Indians should have a better idea on whether Hafner is really in the tank and he could take over Hafner's DH position.

I also would not mind Chisenhall and maybe another young guy being brought to Cleveland after they break camp. It seems like the Indians always have some good young players believe them down in the minors until they get injured or traded.

they will do the same thing with them that they did with santana last year. chisenhall and kipnis will be in AAA to work on specific things, then, provided they don't tank, will get called up in june to give cleveland another year before the clock starts ticking on FA.

opening day roster pretty much set....(no Valbuena, praise jesus)

http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/ne...28&content_id=17165844&vkey=news_cle&c_id=cle

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Indians made a wave of personnel decisions on Monday morning, revealing their planned roster for Opening Day.

Cleveland optioned right-hander Jess Todd and infielder Luis Valbuena to Triple-A Columbus and re-assigned catchers Luke Carlin and Paul Phillips to Minor League camp. Infielder Jayson Nix was also informed that he will not make the Opening Day squad.

Those moves brought the makeup of the 25-man roster into focus, barring any injuries or other developments that would necessitate a change prior to Friday's season opener against the White Sox.

The Tribe's pitching staff will include starters Fausto Carmona, Carlos Carrasco, Justin Masterson, Josh Tomlin and Mitch Talbot. The bullpen will consist of closer Chris Perez, plus fellow right-handers Chad Durbin, Frank Herrmann, Justin Germano and Vinnie Pestano, as well as lefties Rafael Perez and Tony Sipp.

The Indians' starting lineup will feature first baseman Matt LaPorta, second baseman Orlando Cabrera, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, third baseman Jack Hannahan, designated hitter Travis Hafner, catcher Carlos Santana, left fielder Austin Kearns, center fielder Michael Brantley and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo.

The bench will consist of outfielders Travis Buck and Shelley Duncan, catcher Lou Marson and veteran infielder Adam Everett.

Buck, Hannahan, Germano and Everett are not currently on the Tribe's 40-man roster, which stands at 39. That means three subsequent transactions are required prior to Thursday's deadline.

Outfielder Trevor Crowe (right rotator cuff injury) is a candidate for the 60-day disabled list, which would vacate a spot on the roster. The Indians will also attempt to trade Nix, who is out of Minor League options, before potentially designating him for assignment. His departure will also open a roster spot.

The Indians accepted right-hander Doug Mathis' request for unconditional release. He was in camp on a Minor League contract, but he did not make the team's bullpen. Mathis' deal included an out clause that allowed him to elect free agency prior to Opening Day.

Reliver Joe Smith (strained abdominal muscle), infielder Jason Donald (fractured left middle finger) and center fielder Grady Sizemore (left knee) are all expected to begin the season on the 15-day disabled list.
