The 'next wave' splashes in front of Manny Acta: Cleveland Indians spring training briefing

Published: Friday, February 18, 2011, 9:59 AM Updated: Friday, February 18, 2011, 9:59 AM

By Paul Hoynes, The Plain Dealer

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- This is a daily briefing of the Indians in spring training in Goodyear, Ariz.
Feb. 18, Day four: There is a reason spring training is the best time of the season. One of those reasons snuck up on manager Manny Acta late in Thursday's first workout for pitchers and catchers.
As the final group of pitchers took the mounds in the bullpen on the lower part of the Indians training complex, Acta stood behind them to watch. The group included Alex White, Drew Pomeranz, Nick Hagadone and Bryce Stowell.
"It was beautiful to see those four guys," said Acta.
White and Pomeranz are the Indians No.1 picks from the last two years. Hagadone was acquired from Boston in the Victor Martinez trade. He was the Red Sox's No.1 pick in 2007. Stowell last year struck out 51 batters in 42 innings at Class AA Akron and Class AAA Columbus and was clocked at 100 mph.
"That was fun," said Acta. "I don't know how they put that group together. I told our pitching coaches, "This is our next wave.'"
Here's what he said about each of the pitchers.
"Alex White is knocking on the door to be a very good pitcher up here," said Acta. "Pomeranz is going to be an impact guy. Everyone knows how well thought of Hagadone was in the Boston system and our system. And Stowell is one of those power arms that you need in the American League."

Justine Siegal sets MLB milestone

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Justine Siegal became the first woman to pitch batting practice in a major league spring training camp when she threw to the Cleveland Indians.

Siegal, a Cleveland native, wore a patch honoring Christina Taylor, the nine-year-old granddaughter of former major league manager Dallas Green, who was killed in last month's shootings in Tucson.

She prolly threw a no hitter :slappy:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/chad-durbin-in-talks-with-the-indians.html

The Indians and free agent right-hander Chad Durbin are in talks according to SI.com's Jon Heyman (on Twitter), and a deal could happen within a day or two.

Earlier this week we heard that the Red Sox, Rays, Phillies, Rangers, and Mariners were all in pursuit of the 33-year-old, who indicated that he would accept a minor league deal from Philadelphia if his "hand is forced because there are no Major League offers on the table." A few weeks ago Durbin said that he hoped to join a contender, which doesn't really define the Indians.

Cleveland is seeking a starting pitcher, having been connected to both Kevin Millwood and Jeremy Bonderman in recent weeks. Although Durbin hasn't started a game since 2007, he has 75 career MLB starts to his credit and may wish to give it another shot. The bullpen is always a fallback.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Trevor Crowe's chances of breaking camp as an extra outfielder for the Indians have hit an early snag this spring.

Crowe is currently battling a right shoulder injury, forcing him into the training room for rehab work while his teammates take the field for morning workouts. Right now, there is no established timetable for when Crowe can resume playing catch.

"It is definitely frustrating," Crowe said on Friday morning. "When you come in and the team goes out to stretch and then you go to work with the trainer, that's not a good feeling during the first week of Spring Training.

"It is frustrating, but as a professional athlete, that's part of the game."

Crowe, 27, noted that the shoulder fatigue he is currently experiencing is unrelated to the elbow issue that led to an arthroscopic procedure to remove loose bodies from the joint on Oct. 15. Crowe said his surgically repaired elbow has been strong for the past few months.

"My elbow is fine. It's strong. It's good," Crowe said. "Since a month after the surgery, that was good to go. It's 100 percent healthy. There's just tenderness, tiredness, I don't know what you want to call it, [in the shoulder]."

Crowe said he arrived at camp in early January and began playing light catch at that point. Before long, though, the outfielder was shut down due to the shoulder soreness. Crowe said the current plan is to rest, with the hope that the shoulder can recover enough to avoid discussing possible surgery.

"It's just kind of a day-to-day thing," Crowe said. "We have to wait until it calms down to a point where I can start playing catch and continue to build and go from there."

Free agent reliever Chad Durbin has reached agreement on a one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Durbin receives a guaranteed base salary of $800,000 and can make an additional $1 million in reachable incentives, the source said. The deal is pending completion of a physical exam.

Durbin, who had generated interest from some clubs as a starter, is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the Indians.

Durbin, 33, was a valuable bullpen contributor for National League East title teams in Philadelphia from 2008 through 2010. He averaged 64 appearances and 75 1/3 innings a season for manager Charlie Manuel during that span.

The Phillies explored the possibility of bringing back Durbin early in the offseason, but negotiations stalled after the team spent $120 million on free agent Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia front office decided to go with younger, more affordable alternatives in middle relief.

Durbin broke into professional ball with Kansas City in 1996 and pitched as a starter early in his career. He has an overall record of 36-44 with a 5.05 ERA in 11 seasons with the Royals, Indians, Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phillies.

Durbin previously pitched for Cleveland during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Texas, Tampa Bay, Boston and Kansas City were among the other clubs that expressed interest in Durbin this winter.

Austin Kearns arrested for DUI in Kentucky

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Indians outfielder Austin Kearns has a court date in Jessamine County, Ky. on March 10 after being arrested for DUI on Feb. 12. Jessamine County is outside of Lexington, Ky., Kearns hometown.

In the Comments in the PD is this gem:

They should have just let him continue on home. Based on his baseball career, he'd only have had about a 25% chance of hitting anything anyway.

One of my other favorite moments was with Lou again...they used to do that Kiss Cam (not sure if they still do it) but they were going around the stadium like usual, and the very last one they showed was LOU and one of his assistant coaches. Lou saw it an actually started laughing.

Classic.

Laffey shipped to Seattle

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/02/mariners-acquire-lefty-aaron-laffey-from-the-indians/

From Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer comes word that the Indians have traded left-hander Aaron Laffey to the Mariners.

There’s no word yet on what the Tribe might be getting in return, but we can safely guess that it won’t be much.

Laffey, a 16th-round pick in the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft, posted an underwhelming 4.53 ERA and 28/28 K/BB ratio in 55.2 innings for the Indians last season, serving as both a starter and reliever. His numbers will probably look a little better in Seattle, where Safeco Field can be awfully friendly to pitchers, but he is far from a promising pitcher.

The 25-year-old southpaw was being groomed as a potential member of the Indians’ starting rotation this spring in camp. It’s not yet clear how the Mariners will try to use him.

The trade cleared a spot on Cleveland’s 40-man roster for freshly-signed reliever Chad Durbin
