Cleveland Guardians (2022 AL Central Champs)

Oscar Gonzalez seems like he could be a nice player. Though he hasn’t gotten much praise from prospect rankings. Has hit well across all levels and is off to a nice start in his first 50 MLB ABs. I guess his big knock is his lack of taking walks but as long as you keep putting the ball in play……he’s only 24 so we will see.

Sale of minority share to David Blitzer has been approved by the league. Look for Blitzer to become majority owner in five years or so. It'll be interesting to see if this influx of additional cash moves the needle at the trade deadline.

Honestly, I hope it doesn't move the needle at the deadline. Unless something very unexpected like Civale, Reyes and Karinchak all come back and be what they need to keep this level of performance up against teams that don't suck. But even then, I'd rather give kids at bats right now. I mean obviously they need to be open to whatever to get better, and I would be open to being that 3rd team to make a trade work, especially for a seller looking for middle infield prospects where the original buyer has outfield prospects (and obviously always need power arms), but even then I don't see them looking to add a rental or anything where they would need to pay someone $$$ quite yet. Now, might they talk with a couple of the pitchers and trade some arbitration years for a short extension plus a guaranteed contract? I feel like that's most likely.

Taking two out of three from the Dodgers is fun.

They are 5-1 on the current road trip and have won 16 of their last 20.

With Mercado DFA'd today, it's great to see them sticking with the youth and jettisoning those who aren't up to par off the roster. It seems like just a few years ago, we'd still be seeing Mercado and Zimmer as the starters and Chang as the utility guy (or other has-been vets on a MiLB deals), while guys like Kwan and Palacios are sent down. It also might be a good move to be sending Sandlin down to figure out his command.

Eh, Mercado has enough ABs. They know who he is. And I think they do their best to get them 7-800 at bats over 3-4 years. Jesus Aguilar and Gio Urshela are lessons too.
