My issue is that Kyrie has contradicted himself several times throughout this whole thing. If he wants to be the focal point, he should take Minnesota and San Antonio off his list. He'd be second banana to both Towns and Kawhi. I understand LeBron's shadow is larger than anyone else's, but he's literally asking to move from one of the most successful teams in NBA history (three consecutive Finals appearances and one title) for mediocrity elsewhere.
Does anyone here really believe that Irving is good enough to lead a team? We've been watching him for six years. I think he could probably lead an Eastern Conference team to 41 wins. I don't think he's capable of much more than that. He's better than Paul George, but you'd rather have Paul George leading your team. At least George defends and serves as a coach on the floor. Irving is a transcendent scorer and little else. That doesn't make for a title contender.
Looking back at how this impacts the Cavs, they're in both good and bad shape. Irving is under contract for at least two more years, so they're in the catbird seat. They have no incentive to trade him until a Godfather offer comes in, and because they have a top 8 player in the league, that offer will roll in eventually. The question is, what does that offer look like? It's always hard to replace a dollar with four quarters, but two half dollars may make the Cavs better. For one, the PG position is easily replaceable. Second, Irving is a bad defender, which kills them against Golden State. Finally, two half dollars may help to upgrade another weak roster spot, like SG.
I don't mind getting Carmelo in the deal, but he can't be the best part of the return. That would mean our four best players, LeBron, Love, Melo, and Thompson, would be completely unplayable together. I've seen
a number of different options, but I think these are the two best:
