Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Just some food for thought...

http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2...-know-about-trading-for-kevin-love-wfny-faqs/

Q: If Kevin Love wants to be a free agent, why don’t the Cavs just wait for him to be available and sign him?

A:
The Cavaliers won’t have salary cap space to do that. LeBron James’ cap hold would be roughly $22 million. Kyrie Irving will be due roughly $18 million. Dion Waiters and Anthony Bennett will likely see their $5 million options picked up. If Tristan Thompson doesn’t get an extension, he’s looking at a $7 million qualifying offer. Factor in Andrew Wiggins’ $6 million and you’re at $63 million with just those six players. Unless Love is willing to take the veteran minimum, a trade is necessary.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, however. They could still do a sign-and-trade and utilize the unique feature of Brendan Haywood’s $10 million non-guaranteed deal for 2015-16. It’s not impossible, but it’s not that likely. Even less likely: LeBron opting out and taking less money to get this done in outright free agency as Love eyes up the Lakers.

Q: Why wouldn’t the Cavs deal Wiggins? He’s a rookie who is average on offense and may not peak for four or five years.

A: Have you been watching the Summer League? Sure, the kid is raw, but the potential for he and LeBron James in transition—on both ends—is highlight reel-ready. Several GMs have already said he has the potential to be a top five player in the league given enough time.

Q: Then why would the Cavs deal him? They lucked into the top pick and he’ll be one of the top players in the league—on a rookie pay scale.

A: Because Kevin Love is one of the top 12 players in the NBA. He’s a floor-spacing stretch four who also happens to be one of the better passing big men in the league. Essentially, he’s EXACTLY what David Griffin pictures when he discusses fit. He may not average 26 and 12 on a team with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with 20 and 10 with the potential to drop 30 on any given night. Had he not been on a terrible team in the West, he would’ve single-handedly carried his team to the playoffs. Oh, and he’s already cool with Kyrie.

I also don't see any reason Cleveland should let Wiggins go right now unless it's a great deal for us. Our mistake is allowing Minn to see that we desperately need Love. W/o Love this team this year is still a 55-60 win team easily. Heck we won 66 games without a lot less an arguably a lesser LeBron.
55 wins? Maybe, if everything clicks. 60 seems a little unrealistic given the relative youth of the roster around LeBron and the fact they're learning a new system. Those 09/10 Cavs teams that won 60 & 66 games had one major intangible this one may lack early on...chemistry. I still think you start at 48-50 wins for a base and adjust depending on how well they play together out of the gate. Love may increase that by a few wins. One thing that was previously mentioned...how does Love's defense, or lack thereof, affect them in the postseason? If they hold on to Wiggins, he and LeBron give you two possibly elite wing defenders. You let go of Wiggins, and LeBron is stuck having to do an awful lot on defense. That's my major concern with dealing Wiggins for Love.

This is the East....Toronto won 48 games. With the roster, as is, I think the Cavs will be eyeballing 55-60 wins as well.

And the Heat had 54 wins. Right now the Heat last year will be better than the Cavs this year if no Love. Especially when you consider that was year 3 together and this will be the first year together for all of them. I'd go with the 48-52 win range without Love.

I'll disagree with that statement. The Heat had no motivation to play for the regular season and were clearing going easy to save up for the playoffs. The younger, inexperienced Cavs will not be under the same expectations.

Updating a previous report, The Cavaliers reportedly have not considered adding Andrew Wiggins to a deal that would net them Kevin Love.

There was an earlier report that the Cavs were willing to include Wiggins in a deal for Love, but now two people with knowledge of the situation are denying that report. It's been speculated that the Timberwolves were the ones who leaked the Wiggins rumor in an attempt to get the Warriors to up their offer and include Klay Thompson, and it seems that as one report comes out regarding Love’s future destination, the next report refutes it. Nothing is imminent.

Steep? It's insanity. And if Griffin approves that deal, I'll be firmly the in camp of trying to get Chris Grant back. :smash:
Yep, it's insane to trade away your future to win a championship now. I mean, really, what's another fifty-year wait?

I can't believe this is even a topic of discussion right now. Your team has a chance to trade away a bunch of unproven prospects to get a freaking superstar. Kevin Love would arguably be the best player in the Cavs history not named LeBron James. Think about that for a minute.

In case you missed it, I'll repost something from Wade. Read it carefully, as it explains the situation perfectly:

Wiggins needs time, Love makes you championship material NOW.

Exactly. It's a choice between LeBron + Love + Irving all in their All-Star primes, or waiting four years for Wiggins to figure out his asshole from a hoop and hope he pans out and now paired with a 34 year old LeBron that's added another 10,000 minutes to the odometer (which is already at 40,000 minutes) and maybe Kyrie if he hasn't already bailed because Cleveland happens.

By the way, the East SUCKS. SUCKSUCKSUCKS. The time to win it all is right now.

I don't think it's the idea of trading for Love, it's why give up more than you have to to a team that does not have a guy under contract for more than a year. Past a certain point, Minnesota only has the amount of leverage that the Cavs are willing to grant them.

BINGO

I think alot of people are in this boat. If push comes to shove, I believe everyone would trade Wiggins for Love. But before the season isn't that time unless it is a great deal and/or there is all indications that Minnesota was going to accept another deal.

Push comes to shove at the trade deadline. But then you have more info, you see how this team is playing and how the pieces are falling into place. You give Minnesota time to panic, you give other teams chances of screwing up and not wanting or being able to trade for Love anymore, and/or giving other teams time to come up with something to try to get Love. But the Cavs have the trump card... no team can offer a talent like Wiggins.

And this is REALLY going to be an annoying conversation for the next 6 months... grrrrrrr
