Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

And there's the rub. This team is going to be without their answer at QB yet again in 2015. Another year flushed down the toilet, because the FA crop is garbage, and I have zero belief that this franchise has the ability to find one later in the draft. In fact, I have zero faith in their ability to draft/develop a QB, period. I'm pretty sure they would have even fucked up Andrew Luck. Even if Hoyer were to return, and that's far from a guarantee, he's still gonna be the below average guy he was in 2014 throwing to a bunch of stiffs. It's a shame, because they finally have some nice pieces along the OL (assuming Mack can recover) and at RB in West/Crowell. A gaggle of Hoyer/Johnny Goodtimes/Shaw hardly looks appealing. Even less so if it's just Johnny Goodtimes/Shaw and some other scrub castoff like McCown or somebody of his ilk.

Their best bet is to hope they can luck out like New Orleans did years ago and grab an established guy through free agency. However, I have serious doubts any FA with any options would sign with this graveyard of a franchise. Spinning their wheels into eternity.

The consensus that used to be on this board is that if the team surrounding the QB was good enough, even an average talent to take them to 8wins and maybe the playoffs. We got damn close last year and that included having some of the biggest injury setbacks I can remember in a long, long time.

I'd love to have Hoyer back and then take a shot at that Grayson kid from Colorado state. I saw some of his game tape. Small school QB, good pocket presence and patience, nice high release and makes pretty good decisions with the ball. Doesn't really have upper echelon talent around him, which is what I like.

Any signal caller that can raise the game of those around him at that level is worth a long look by our scouts.

I'd tend to agree, an "average" QB with the right supporting cast can get you to the playoffs. In fact, there's plenty of evidence that it's true. However, with few exceptions, average QB play tends to get you knocked out of the playoffs pretty quickly...unless you have a transcendent defense.

Now, that said, QB seems to be the least of this team's problems if you believe the stuff coming out about the front office, and general morale of the team. Yes, they played very solid for 11 weeks last year, but the wind was really knocked out of their sails at the end of the year, and there seems to be an awful lot of internal strife. Compound that with likely losing their most talented receivers in Cameron and Gordon, even though neither contributed much in 2014, it looks like rough sledding ahead...still.

I'm actually not all that worried. The nice thing about football is the rejuvenated attitude it seems to bring every spring time. You're feeling healthy, you've probably been away from team-mates you enjoy spending time with and overall you miss the game itself.

I have a belief that any negative feelings amongst the coaching staff and players will be eliminated after the draft. You get to put the pads back on and introduce the rookies to the game. I think this team has that kind if mindset with Pettine at the helm.

As for the internal front office strife. Haslam came out and supported Farmer 100% without hesitation and Deflippo appears to be a likable guy. Year 2, cooler heads will prevail and after comparing the depth chart from the 2010 to the 2014 season, I have a lot less to complain about now.

We don't need a home run draft, just young guys that can be steady contributors. I.e. Don't fuck it up with Mariota or getting fancy in a trade up.

I just don't see the arm strength on Mariota.
Me either. I think he's a QB that will need a specific system to be a successful NFL QB. Put him in Philly with Chip Kelly, I think he'd shine. Put him in Tampa with Lovie and whatever the hell that offense they run is...not so much. In fact, as much as it pains me to say it, I think Jameis has a much better chance in the NFL, and if I was drafting a QB, he'd be the guy I want. Of course, you'd have to consider all of the other garbage that comes with him, but that's another discussion.

Prepare for a spring of Screamin A breathlessly telling us that if whatever team drafts Winston puts the "right people" around him, that he'll be successful....

Browns aren't expected to resign Buster.

I'm not a fan of that strategy. I do believe Williams, Desir, Nelson and Gilbert all have good talent and one may develop into a very good #2CB, but Buster has played
well in Haden's absence and has gotten better every year he's been with the Browns.

Edit: Browns release McQuistan. Thank god. Hopefully they take having decent Oline depth seriously.

I guess my point was that whatever Farmer suggested certainly did not give the Browns any advantage and I do not know what suspending a GM accomplishes especially during the season. I can see a suspension during the off-season when they are looking for players and such but during the season sort of confuses me which is not hard.

It accomplishes shifting attention away from a super bowl champ caught deliberately breaking rules again.
Protect the shield.
Not really. I like Mariota as a person, good kid. Classy, hardworking. Do I think either of them will be overly successful NFL signal callers?

How do I put this.....? No.

I think he could be successful in a specific situation... everyone insisted manziel could duplicate Wilson's above average but Mariota is who they should've been talking about.
Cleveland can't provide that though...
Not sure a top5 or 10 pick is worth it either.

Winston would be a slam dunk if not for his other issues. We just went down a much safer road with Gordon.
Grayson did have a phenom at WR and a RB transfer McElwain brought from Bama... that offense had legit talent that'll be drafted.
