Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

I don’t think anyone dislikes this due to Watson’s talent. He’s a piece of dogshit wrapped in catshit. Serial sexual predator. Fuck him.
I don’t disagree on the ethical/moral issues. What he’s accused of doing is repugnant. From a football perspective, someone was going to trade for him and have him be playable for the next decade without consequence regardless. Might as well be the Browns.

So, the elephant in the room - isn't he looking at a suspension under the league's personal conduct policy? Admittedly, I haven't followed this shit much at all, but I thought that is/was still on the table?

Yes. The Browns addressed that with the cap hit being $1 mill in 2022. When I see that, I can’t help but assume we won’t be seeing much of Watson this season.

This seems like such a risky/reckless move to me. Yeah, he's a very talented QB. But you just dealt your next 3 first round picks and there's a chance (I don't know how high) that he my not even play much this year. So then you punt to 2023 and lean on a qb who has barely played in 2 years. Meanwhile, you're paying him ~20% of your cap. I don't follow the Clowns but superficially for a laugh, but what are their current contract situations?
Miles Garrett
Denzel Ward
Nick Chubb

Those are high end guys that I'm assuming if they're not already, will soon need to be paid at near the top of their respective position groups. I believe Armani Cooper is a FA after this year, right? If he has the kind of year they brought him in to have, he's gonna get paid, too.

I guess I just think locking 1/5 of your cap up in one guy, when you have to put 50+ other guys around him is an enormous risk that has the potential to totally submarine you. Yes, having an elite QB is in 95% of cases key to winning a SB, but he needs other stars around him. It's now a 17 game season, 20+ if you get to a SB. Depth is critical. I don't know how you get that depth when you have to settle for table scraps because your QB and probably a few others are taking up an enormous chunk of your cap.

I know KC won with Mahomes who is now making stupid money, but they won with him on his rookie deal. That isn't gonna be sustainable.

Ward will be a free agent in 2023, Garrett in 2027. They’re going to cut Amari Cooper before the end of his contract imo (2025), so that’ll save space. I’ve heard that from a few talking heads I like. Cooper is due $20 mill/year until the contract ends, and the cap hit is $20 mill each season as well.

I’m concerned about Ward being resigned next offseason. Was concerned about that before the Watson deal though. If he has a good season, he could legitimately ask to be paid as the top corner in the league.

Okay, so Garrett is locked in. But, yeah, I would assume Ward is gonna have to be PAID.

I just checked, Garrett has a $29M cap hit in 2023, $32M in 2024. So that will be in the $75-80M range for TWO guys. And you still have to pay Ward. That's gonna be some interesting cap gymnastics.

Yup. Cooper, Watson and Garrett alone will account for over $100 million in cap after next season. Adios, Amari. We will have barely known you.

I might have to find my old Niners gear, @NFBuck. The first topic I made on BP was when Bill Walsh died. Tibor dinged me for it. Fuck Tibor. Miserable sack of shit. I’m glad he can’t respond.

(why do I remember specific stuff like that, and not basic things at my job? lol)

And then they need to find somebody else for him to throw to. Unless they dig up some gems in the draft, the WR situation could get really dicey.
