Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

Clowns have requested an interview with Ravens OC Greg Roman.

Clowns fans better hope he isn't the guy. He looks like a genius running Baltimore's offense this year, but as a Niners fan, let me assure you, Greg Roman has a very specific type of QB he can win with...freak athletes that can run. He had similar success in SF early in Kaepernick's career before the league caught up to what they were doing. Roman/Harbrau countered by trying to make Kaep more of a conventional passer instead of a one read and run guy and it all came crashing down. Same might very well happen with Lamar Jackson. Outside of having freak athletes at QB for a short time, they guy has been nothing more than mediocre. Greg Roman would be a disaster.

And the year you guys finally brought Alex Smith back from the dead...? (2011)

And your thoughts on Saleh? He seems like a no bullshit kind of coach.

what are your thoughts about Saleh… Niners DC
Young, energetic guy. I thought a lot more highly of him in November. The Niners D was lights out during the first half of the season (#2 in the NFL), but fell off a cliff in the second half (24th). In fairness, they had some key injuries (Edge Dee Ford, S Jaquiskie Tartt, LB Kwon Alexander), but teams seemed to figure his aggressive scheming out. How that translates to a HC, I don't know, but I'd want to see another strong season out of him.

The Niners 2011 offense was decent (~23 ppg), and Smith was an excellent game manager. But he was a #1 overall pick and suffered through horrendous coaching his first 6 years. I think the work done by harbrau/Roman with Smith a little overstated. They also had one of, if not the best OLs in the league that year. And the defense was beastly.
The burning question on everyone's lips is: Will the Browns fuck up this hire?
They 100% will. It's in their DNA.

I'd be in favor of bringing in Urban in some sort of leadership position to see what he can do to right this shit show and help pick the coaches. I don't want to see him with headaches on the sideline, but he is a leader and great football mind to put between Moneyball and Dorsey/new GM. Maybe he could help find them a Herman or Day to OC. Looking back I don't know that any of the trades with the Giants made the Browns better this year. Vernon didn't impress and is hurt too much and trying to feed OBJ seemed to hold the offense back when they should have been giving the ball to Chubb more.

If I could I'd look to move OBJ for a first rounder and resign Hunt with the savings. With Hunt's receiving ability he and Chubb could probably both play 60-70% of the snaps with an OC that knows how to maximize what they get out of the players they have. Both guys seem to be unselfish enough that they can use one of them as a FB in some situations. They need to fix the OT problem on both sides. If they do that I don't think RG will be a problem.

LB will need to be addressed. They will need at least 3 next year and I don't know that Schobert will be worth the contract that someone will give him. He seems to be the type of player that puts up stats, but a lot of them come downfield. I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him for the right price, but the NFL isn't know for hometown discounts. I don't think the talent level is that bad on the defense that a good scheme could make them adequate. I think Wilson and Takitaki can succeed at 2 LB spots, but they really need a difference maker at the other.

I'm not high on any of the names I've heard so far for HC. Rivera was probably the best name out there, but they either moved too slow to get an interview or are such a bad destination that no good coach wants to come here. Probably end up giving McDaniel a 10 year deal to get him to suck in Cleveland for the next 5-6 years until they can fire him. Keep seeing reports about Moneyball picking good up and coming coaches the past 2 searches and the organization going a different way so maybe give him a shot at the hire.

The problem with getting rid of Freddie is that most of the other options aren't very attractive long term. Some not even attractive short term (Mcdaniels, Daboll)

If Dorsey remains then he is committed to Baker. I've said this before, stop comparing him and asking him to be Brett Farve. Channel the inner Jeff Garcia. We need to address pass protection through the draft and a swing man for the Oline needs to be identified for both the interior and edges. Commit to running the ball, improving the offense from under center and working the passing game off play action. This also includes the need to have the bigger bodies on the field. I would LOVE to see more 12 personnel that we caught glimpses of back half of the year. Which is why Njoku being shelved was so mind boggling to me. He is a willing blocker, he just needs work on strength and leverage. The 2nd man there needs to be identified as well. How fucking great would it be if this offense was tailored around our QB and ball control similar to what you see with the Seahawks, Rams, Ravens, etc etc. The best teams in the league RUN the ball effectively. It's almost a renaissance of sorts - check out all the league leaders in passing and count the winning records. Now go count the league leaders in team rushing and compare. 7 of the 10 are going to the playoffs if I counted correctly? Hell, the eagles got the wild card and they sit at 11th overall rushing. Chubb is a top 5 back, you don't need to throw pounds of cash at Hunt. Tag him for a 2nd rounder, get the draft assets and bring in young runners to keep the ground game going on the cheap. Again, look at San Fran, Seattle, New England, etc etc. I would kill to have a Shanahan disciple with their hands on this offense.

Defense -

If we get an offer for Vernon - I'm taking it. He's our weakest run defender on a Dline that is on the "small" side for NFL standards. So the spot across from Myles will need to be addressed. It would be nice to find a couple bigger interior plugging bodies for good rotational minutes as the season wears on. Limiting the running game and improving the redzone defense has to be a huge priority for that side if not priority #1. If we're resigning Schob, that will depend on the cost. Also when the next DC gets in here, probably a bit more prudent to move him to more of a WILL backer roll. Let Mack be the inside fill man as the bigger body and force teams to challenge his coverage ability - which is pretty good. That is actually a bright spot for this defense, our two healthy backers are good in coverage.

The secondary needs depth back on the hashes. I still feel Randall is a quality player, but Wilks' defense has done him no favors. The spot opposite him needs work. Likewise for Denzel, Greedy and all our corners. These are long armed, on-ball DB's that should be playing more man and should be challenging receivers at the line. If not, then you're wasting picks going for premium athletes at that position and playing fast. I like the depth and players we have at corner, I really do.

My fear is that the Dorse brings in another coach who attempts to move away from the strengths we currently have in order to fulfill "their" vision of what this team can be personnel wise. That would be another incredibly stupid move, in the long 20 year history of incredibly stupid things that Browns ownership and management has done. But given our history, that is exactly what will happen.

Eric Bieniemy was mentioned multiple times in these threads last year. Andy Reid and Mahomes have had a great run of things and he is a big reason as to why.
