Cleveland Browns (Factory of Sadness)

Source: Browns restructure Deshaun Watson's deal to get cap compliant

The Browns have once again restructured quarterback Deshaun Watson's contract, a source told ESPN's Field Yates, clearing nearly $36 million in salary cap space that will make Cleveland cap compliant ahead of the new league year.

Before the restructuring of Watson's deal Thursday morning, the Browns were about $22 million over the cap.

Watson, 29, has two years remaining on the five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract he signed in March 2022 and is owed $46 million in each of the next two seasons. He has been rehabbing at the Browns' practice facility in Berea, Ohio, after re-tearing his right Achilles tendon three months after the initial injury in October.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry said last month at the NFL scouting combine that the team's focus for Watson is "making sure that he gets healthy" and emphasized that "there's nothing nefarious -- it's just an unfortunate accident."

While the Browns still owe Watson $92 million, Berry has been adamant that the deal would not prevent the organization from being active in free agency, where they are expected to sign a veteran quarterback.

Source: Browns owner declines meeting with Myles Garrett

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam recently declined a request to meet with Myles Garrett amid the star pass rusher's trade request, a league source confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

NFL Network first reported that Haslam declined Garrett's request to meet and directed him to speak instead with general manager Andrew Berry, who oversees football operations.

A Browns spokesperson declined to comment.

The development comes with both sides dug in on their stances -- Garrett wishing to be traded to a contender and the Browns adamant that they will not acquiesce in the request. Garrett first requested a trade in early February, saying the Browns' future is not aligned with winning right now. A source also said that Garrett is not open to a contract extension with the team.

Berry reiterated at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis last week that he does not intend to trade Garrett, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski later said Garrett is "part of the present. He's part of the future."

Garrett, a six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro selection, has two years remaining on the record-breaking five-year, $125 million extension he signed in 2020 but has no more guaranteed salary.

Is that bad?

Is that bad?

Probably not for Haslam, he is holding all the cards. Garrett is under contract with the Browns for 2 more years (2025 & 2026) at an average salary of $25M (he signed a 5 year contract for $125M that includes a $21M signing bonus). Hell, the "franchise" salary for a DE for 2025 is $24M. The Browns could "franchise" tag him after the 2026 season too. Unless the Browns acquiesce on this, Garrett only has 2 choices for the foreseeable future:

1. Play for Cleveland the next 3 or 4 years or until his play no longer justifies the "franchise" designation. Then become an unrestricted free agent.
2. Just retire and be elected into the NFL Hall Of Fame in 5 years.

It’s so frustrating…

Myles trade demand is actually a good thing. The Browns roster is a disaster and they’re fucked until they can get out from under Watson’s contract.

Trade Garrett for picks and begin rebuilding the roster. He’s actually doing Cleveland a favor…
Or retire. Sit a year and pull a Brady and come back with someone else.

The Browns could give Garrett permission to negotiate a trade to any other team under one of the following conditions:

1) To get Garret the Browns receive three 1st round draft picks.
or
2) To get Garrett he refunds the Browns his $21M signing bonus (since he doesn't want to adhere to the contract he signed) and the Browns get two 1st round draft choices.
or
3) To get Garrett the receiving team agrees to also accept Watson in the trade and only gives the Browns one 1st round draft pick.

Or retire. Sit a year and pull a Brady and come back with someone else.

Won't work, Brady was a free agent. If Garrett just retired before this season and then came back next year (2026) he would still be under contract to the Browns for the remaining 2 years on his contract.
