Subject: Custody Battle

Custody Battle Ruling:
A seven year old San Francisco boy was at the center of a courtroom drama this morning when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents so the judge awarded custody to his aunt. The boy confirmed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he refused to live there. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents the boy cried out that they beat him more than anyone. The judge then decided to allow the boy to choose who should have custody of him. Custody was granted to the Cleveland Browns this morning as the boy
firmly believes that they are not capable of beating anyone.

Damn, seeing Marty Schottenheimer now is sad. He doesn't remember his football career. He knows he had one, but can't recall aspects of it - 40 years of his life.

Fix The Cleveland Browns With This One Weird Trick

Former Ohio State safety Malik Hooker is off to an incredible start to his NFL career with three interceptions in his first three games.

Former Michigan safety Jabrill Peppers’ NFL career is off to a… less auspicious… start.

As you undoubtedly know, the Cleveland Browns had their choice between Hooker and Peppers and opted to trade down for the guy who didn’t play his college ball in Columbus. That’s been one of two constant themes of the Browns’ draft history since the franchise returned in 1999. The other is making selections that end up on @OldTakesExposed within a few months.

So - with the Browns being what they are, I looked at the record of another (at least perceptively) laughing stock in their sport, namely Rutgers.

The Browns, since 1999 and including the 4 games played this year, are 88-204 (or a winning percentage of .301)

Rutgers, since 1999 and including their 4 games this year, are 93-123, for a winning percentage of .430.

So not only has Rutgers won more games in far fewer attempts, but they aren't nearly the laughing stock people make them out to be (at least not recently, and mostly because of Greg Schiano).

To parrot @NFBuck - you literally have to try to be this bad this consistently. Hell even the damned Jaguars have gone .500 or better 5 times in the 18 seasons since 1999 and given how bad the AFC East is this year, they may add another one to the total. Unfortunately, with what looks to be another bust of a draft, it doesn't look like things are changing anytime soon either.

The only franchise I can think of off the top of my head that can match the clowns futility over an extended period would be the '83-'96 Bucs. In those 14 years, they went 64-143 (.309), which actually puts them .008 better than the clowns. A legitimate argument could be made that they were trying to suck, as their payroll was consistently the lowest in the NFL under owner/cheapskate Hugh Culverhouse.

Seriously the Browns should do something where they let the fans draft for them, or a pac of fans or something. I think a lot of us would have drafted Watson and Hooker in round one.
I ain't gonna try to rewrite history, I didn't think Watson would be all that great as a pro. Many here didn't, and frankly, he may still implode once the NFL figures him out. QBs that rely on improvisation and turn the ball over a lot in college tend to flame out in the NFL (see: Manziel, Johnny). Of course, I don't get paid high six figures to evaluate/scout these things. But, yes, employing a few of us from this thread would have yielded much better results over the last decade than the doofuses in Berea.

To be fair, Rutgers does play an FCS school every year for a guaranteed win. That would be like the Browns playing a CFL team every year.

Now don't get me wrong ... I'm not saying that the Browns would actually beat a CFL team. But at least they'd have a chance.

My picks for the 2016 draft were Carson Wentz in round 1 and Michael Thomas in round 2, no trading down, no stockpiling future draft picks, no screwing around with analytics, just get two good solid football players at positions of need.

Your turn, Sashi....

Honestly, Rutgers wasn't that bad from about Schiano's third year on. They even went 23-16 in Kyle Flood's first three years before his shit recruiting sunk them.

If you want a D1 parallel to the clowns, I'd throw out SMU and their first 15-20(ish) years post death penalty.

Weren't the Clippers (NBA) the standard bearer of incompetent franchises for about a 20 year period?
They were. From the late seventies thru the early nineties, they were the gold standard of incompetence. However, they relocated twice in that period...Buffalo to San Diego to Los Angeles. And I’d argue the nba wasn’t set up for parity the way today’s nfl is. I think it’s much harder to be consistently bad in today’s nfl than in the nba 25-35 years ago.
