Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

I'd settle for them staying at 32 and taking Spence. He can be a steal at this point. I agree they need OL and secondary help as well so if they went that route, so be it. They have so many holes though, they can go just about any position and upgrade. If they don't address OL or secondary or wherever else at the top of this draft, I fully expect them to address whatever they don't address this year, in next years draft. I'm expecting a dreadful season this year, a QB drafted with their first 1st rounder next year and then for them to continue to fill holes with the rest of their bevy of picks. I would prefer they upgrade the OL this year though, if they are going to draft a top QB next year.
Given all of the issues they've had with "questionable" character guys in recent years, I'm not sure spending another high draft pick one is the best idea right now...

I don't hate the pick either. I don't want that to be confused with me being thrilled with it, either. I didn't really know anything about Coleman before and I still have some skepticism. What I'm going to trust is that the GM did his due diligence and had a reason why Coleman was at the top of the Browns board at #15.

What scares me is this - Shashi being overly analytical and being enamored with numbers. I'm sure he saw the 20 touchdowns and said "We have to look at this guy". Scouts confirm that he isn't total trash but is a receiver better taken on the backhalf of the 1st - front end of the 2nd being he's not a prototypical #1 pass catcher. Can't find any further trade down partners so instead of readjusting their board, they go with the receiver. I guess its nice if your philosophy is 'sticking to your guns'. However I prefer to be more flexible when a situation as fluid as the NFL draft happens.

All you need to know about Coleman is the first time he's lead across the middle he'll be literally split in half by the opposing strong safety.

There are receivers his size in the NFL that flourish without being killed. He does have elite burst so it will be very difficult to get a clean shot on him.

edit: I'll gladly open up this round with Spriggs, maybe Von?

You can believe Shashi or not but he said in an interview that it was about the player not to position so he was the highest -ranked player on their board at that time. I am just stating that is what he said.

At this point I find it best to 'not' trust anything coming from an NFL front office.

Remember how Farmer, Haslam and their scouting department said Manziel was the #1 QB on their board and their BPA at 22?

Then the article just released the other day Pettine admitting Johnny was in fact NOT their #1 on the board at the time...
These guys talk out of their ass constantly it would seem.

Upgrade or downgrade from Travis Benjamin? Discuss.

Too soon to tell but based on college production, the edge goes to Coleman.

REC YDS YPC TD R YD YPC TD
Benjamin (4yr) - 131 2146 16.4 13 25 126 5.0 1

Coleman (3yr) - 173 3009 17.4 33 33 164 5.0 1

However, take into account what Benjamin did last year. Solid year in a contract year both receiving and punt returns

REC 68 YDS 966 AVG 14.2 TD 5 + 1 TD on PR

If numbers stay true, Coleman will be better sooner. Last year was the only good season Benjamin had. IMO, it could be a more than a fair trade off. Overpay Benjamin to stay in Cleveland or pay Coleman his rookie salary based on where he was drafted.

Early advantage - Coleman.

I'm far from enamored with the pick. But when you read the pff breakdown and all the analytics on the kid, it's a good chance that he was far and away #1 on Cleveland's board at the time. And those same rankings had him far and away the #1 wr in the class.

Nice work however one of my favorite Browns players was Travis and the one plays that I will remember him making last year was when he was about 30 yards behind a defender who intercepted a pass or recovered a fumble (cannot remember which) and he chased that guy down. I know it was a contract YEAR but Benjamin was a proven NFL player and now he will be wearing the powder blue of San Diego with Joey.

Thanks. Travis was one of the few bright spots on a crappy team and I hated to see him go. And one can never under value a quality football player that continues to play hard even when the team is losing. I do think he will be a solid player in SD especially with better players around him. I wish him only the best.
