Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

I counted seven Dellys, with two prospects (Seth DeValve and Trey Caldwell) being such unknowns that I couldn't really compare them to anybody.

By "Dellys", I took them to mean players whose attitude/hustle/desire make up for their lack of athleticism. The seven "Delly" draftees certainly have all that. What differentiates them from Delly is that six of the seven went to big-time programs (Colorado State's Higgins being the exception) and that all had outstanding production in college, while Delly averaged 14.2 points and 5.6 assists at St. Mary's:

PlayerHeightWeight40-timeComments from NFL Network and CBS Sports
Carl Nassib6' 7"277 lbs4.84 secThin legs ... needs more mass ... not much twitch ... lacking agility, explosiveness, fluidity
Cody Kessler6' 1"220 lbs4.89 secAverage size, adequate arm, fair athleticism ... physical limitations
Joe Schoebert6' 1"244 lbs4.76 secLess-than-ideal size ... lacks quick twitch ... average athleticism ... lacking strength
Jordan Payton6' 1"207 lbs4.47 secLack of speed and athleticism to beat coverage ... average top-end speed
Spencer Drabgo6' 6"315 lbs5.27 secAverage lower body, barrel chest, "Spongebob frame" ... not a very good athlete
Rashard Higgins6' 1"196 lbs4.64 secThin-boned ... pedestrian speed ... average quickness ... overmatched physically
Scooby Wright III6' 0"239 lbs4.90 secAverage athlete, below average straight-line speed ... stiff, lacks fluidity
In sum, all of these guys were solid, highly-decorated, very productive football players at the college level, but each of them lacks prototypical NFL athleticism. Every team needs a few Dellys, but you can't have too many guys on your roster who can't keep up with the speed of the NFL game.
Is herbstreit the scout?

Keep in mind " average " is NFL average. Paytons 40 time was top 10 in his position group. (And it's right, not elite)

At any rate... You do need some Dellys I'm guessing some will be Dellys some will be better. Some will be cut. Same NFL scout swears to god Scooby wright is the next Zach Thomas. (Maybe that's not good, who the fuck knows)

I think what the advanced analytic (numbers geeks) and the good old boys of "I know football players when I see them" don't realize theyre essentially the same mindset.

If you put a player in front of Sashi and ask him to watch tape to evalute, he's going to end up referring back to what he knows - quantifiable stats.

Ask the old boys what stats mean to them from seeing player after player produce monster numbers in college only to bust out in the pro's and they"ll give their feelings.

Point being, football must be taken into context from both sides. They need one another because both sides are far too entrenched in a singular mindset to maintain longevity and/or consistency when identifying talent.

You want to draft the kid that caught 20TD's? Cool. Find out what led to his production. Surrounding talent, scheme, play calling, individual matchups on a per game basis, targets, drop rate.

All of those things incorporate every aspect of scouting for both sides work with one another. It's an ecosystem of delicate balance. If your dogma takes you too far in one direction you get Phil Savage. Too far in the other...? I'm praying I won't use Sashi's name in the same manner as Phil.

Joe Thomas has been named to what? 9 pro bowls? Pretty important position too. I get it, but they need 8 guys more than they need one.

Yea I got that part and agree. More speaking of the Goff vs. Bosa argument... SD got the best value imo. Maybe Eagles... I think Wentz could be good with some development. But I don't get what anyone sees in Goff as a top10 pick... most other drafts he'd be a late 1st or 2nd guy. And still probably a bust like Brady Quinn.

Former Brown in the news....

A former Cleveland Browns player who had his sentencing delayed in an embezzlement case while he participates in a concussion study is now being accused of assaulting a man at a golf course over a loud radio.

Highland Hills police on Thursday said Reggie Rucker grabbed Timothy Urbancic by the throat and pushed him at a suburban Cleveland golf course.

A police report says Rucker asked the group if they had ''any golf etiquette'' and threatened to shoot Urbancic during the altercation on Saturday.

.
Rucker had pleaded guilty as part of a deal to stealing from two children's charities to pay gambling debts and personal expenses.

Finally a "good news" story about a Brown...

Browns player surprises local teen as prom date
A Cleveland-area teen was surprised by a special date to her senior prom on Saturday.

Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Cameron Erving surprised a Cleveland-area teen on Saturday, when he showed up at her house to take her to prom.

Elna Wright, a 17-year-old Elyria High School student, has a rare progressive disorder called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. She originally planned to attend the dance with her boyfriend, who passed away last fall, according to FOX 8 Cleveland. But as prom approached, and Wright did not have a date, her parents reached out to the Browns -- Elna's favorite team -- in hopes of making her prom night a memorable occasion.

Erving offered to be Wright's date and pulled out all of the stops to make it a special evening.

Erving picked up Wright in a limo bus from her home and accompanied her to a nearby park to take photos before arriving at the prom venue.

"She's on top of the world right now," Elna's dad, Ebony Wright, said. "This means everything."

As noted by FOX 8, Wright was crowned homecoming queen last fall and will graduate next month.
