Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

What a horrific day for Team Egghead.
Browns got a head start on blowing it up again in 2 years.

I'm going under 2.5 wins next year and am in the process of looking at potential #1 picks for 2017.

It will be interesting to see what they do end up doing. They have to spend money to replace players. Analytics are great, but in the NFL most teams get ahead by holding onto their good players. During the season I did say the Browns are so far away from competing that they might as well blow the whole thing up and trade away everyone that will be passed their prime in 3 years (i.e. Thomas, Haden, etc.). Best case scenario where they hit on every low price FA and draft pick it will still take 2-3 years to build a good team. We all know CLE is more about Murphy's Law than the best case scenario.

The only one of the four really worth retaining was Schwartz, and he tried to leverage against the browns and they told him to piss up a rope. Ballsy, and probably stupid.

The thing I can see with all of them is that they all probably had inflated value, which isn't going to jive when the numbers guy is in charge of the roster. Mack was a very good C at least before the broken leg, but he was always more finesse than power and might never make it back to 100%. He'd be best surrounded by 4 road graders. Gibson had 1 good year 2 years ago, Benjamin and Schwartz had one good year last year. Even as recent as a year ago people wanted those two to be cut. I don't have as big of a problem with guys walking, but the Eggheads need to do something to replace those starters. Right now we have a lot of maybes. Maybe Erving gets his shit together and can replace Mack. We never saw him at center last year, but he needs some serious strength work. Maybe Gordon comes back and is a #1 WR again or maybe Pryor develops into the Lebron James of WR's that his measurables say he could be. Either way we still have at least 2 slot dots, which is more than enough. Maybe all the young under-performing DB's get their shit together and can field a decent backfield. Maybe Gilbert was meant to play FS rather than CB for all I know. There is no maybe for RT. They need to bring in at least 1-2 starting quality OL so that we go at least 6 deep because there is no maybe about needing depth. This is Cleveland injuries WILL happen.

Maybe stupid, but tells you in their minds they are in it for the long haul (delusional as it probably is) and they're gonna send the message that they want it played straight up. And yeah, Schwartz is the only one worth keeping for more than a year.

What sort of slogan can we start for Deshaun Watson?
"Take it in the Caan for Deshaun".

I'd prefer they pass on the QB this year, select a sure fire 10 year starter with the #2 pick, go with McKown another year. Not fired up by the D111 QB or the string bean from Cal.

My buddies were all disappointed that the Browns lost all of their FAs. I told them...

"All that these players who just left have ever known is losing. They're facing a new coach (again), a new GM (again), the team has NO QB, the team has been dreadful even with all of our now FAs on it, the franchise is taking a new approach using the analytics of a baseball guy, they have a shitty owner and now they have a chance to get out and get PAID. I'd be worried if they chose to stay because that would mean we have the dumbest fucking players in the league. There isn't a single situation that these guys could go to that could be any worse and you assholes are disappointed that they didn't choose to stay?"

I need smarter friends...

That's fine and all but don't say the following:

"It is important that we keep our own," Sashi Brown said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "It sends the right message to the locker room when you reward guys that do it the right way and make sure that they understand that being here in Cleveland we want to build through the draft certainly but we also need to retain our guys when we get to free agency.

"And it's been tough to do that, largely because there's been so much transition. So we talked to them about the continuity moving forward that we're aiming for."

Then let everyone walk.

To me it seemed like some players are getting tired of being a part of this mismanaged piece of [Mark May] and want to finish out their career with some w's. I'm sure they will be replaced with a bunch of questionable draft picks.

Those same players are not good enough to produce wins themselves, so they have gone to other organizations where they can be passengers. Would not have been all that useful to the Browns at this stage.
