I'm not suggesting he is worth it just for entertainment value. I am just saying I don't think he is more or less likely to flop than Bridgewater or Bortles (in fact, I think he is the better prospect)...so if he does flop, as I think any of Mack, Watkins, Bortles, Bridgewater, etc. could, at least you have the excitement/entertainment value.
I do not think any of the Qb's are really worth the fourth pick, there are too many other solid options. Trading back would be a great option if the situation presented itself. I think that the QB they like is Carr but I could also see them not taking one at all.
The reason I would like the Browns to take another WR rather than Watkins is because I believe that Watkins may quite a few catches and yards on WR screen plays and those do not work very well in the NFL. Another WR that no one is talking about besides Robinson is Matthews out of Vanderbilt. I think there are just too many good WRs to take one of the first round especially #4.Depending on how far the tumble - I'd have little issue with a trade down. The issue with taking Matthews and putting him at RT for 3-4 years as the heir to Thomas is that after that amount of time, you have someone grown accustomed to the position dedicating quite a few offseasons only to be abruptly switched.
Ideally I'd like OT/OLB, WR & QB in the first two rounds. That's if a trade down occurred I could see Matthews, Carr, then Mosely and best WR available. Cooks, maybe? Lee? Abbrederris? Not many people talking about Robinson out of Penn State. I thought the kid was pretty damn solid. Plenty of WR options. I'd love to take Watkins and have him be the next Julio Jones. But much like Julio - the injury bug is a concern. Especially for a franchise as snakebit as this one.
Either way, I see a QB at #4 as a monumental fuck up. Especially in this draft.
Do not worry all the top QB's are visiting Cleveland this week for physicals and conversation. I know that you do not like Johnny but if the Browns select him I will be fine with the pick unlike the majority of guys. To be honest, I have no idea who I would select at #4 but I do not think that I would take your favorite WR when there are so many of them available in this draft. That had better be the most amazing smoke screen Farmer has produced. Hey, fuck it. Just when I thought the Browns couldn't have possibly outdone the colossal failure that is Weeden - they prove me wrong.
Just a difference on opinion then, I think Manziel and Bridgewater are both top 5 picks (I don't care what Bridgewater did at his pro day, I think he fits well in Jacksonville). And I also do not think Hoyer is an NFL starter or even a stop-gap really, but time will tell I suppose. You can get away with a mediocre QB if the rest of your team is elite (Eli has two rings because of a killer defense in NY) but that is not the case here...I just think you need a legit QB and I do not really see Carr being any different than Weeden at 26.
Taking this backwards, and I don't mean this contentiously at all... but, the problem with "not seeing Carr being any different than Weeden at 26" is that they aren't the same guy. they might suck equally, but, just because one didn't work out has nothing to do with the other, any more than every 6th round pick will be Tom Brady. I don't know if Carr will end up being any good or not...
Joe Thomas will be 29 this season; a bit early to be working on his predecessor IMO.
Billy Turner, a kid from NDSU I believe, would be a solid pick in the 3rd or so if need be, but I wouldn't rush an OT pick. If we could trade down though, I'd be ecstatic. I still think Jordan Matthews out of Vandy will be a WR steal in this draft.
