Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

We will just have to agree that we like different rebuilding strategies. I prefer bringing in talent through deep drafts. New England has proven that can work. I think they have a chance to address their biggest needs (QB, RB, OG, ILB) early in this draft. I was in the camp that would have preferred to see that cap space spent on Schaub and let him compete with Hoyer. Seems the front office would rather not address the most glaring need, quarterback, through free agency but rather through the draft. Makes sense from a long-term standpoint...not as much in the short-term. The Browns division is a mess and I thought bringing in Schaub to throw to Watkins, Gordon, Cameron and a potential FA pickup coupled with backs like Hyde, Baker and Lewis would give them enough firepower to compete right away. I definitely would like to see the first pick be Watkins. Makes the most sense given what else is likely to be available (I am anti-Manziel). If they are going to go QB early then Carr should be available at #26. If that happens my prayer is the they sign Tate and then take Su'a-Filo or one of the other athletic guards like Gabe Jackson with their pick in the 2nd. I still like Borland and then the best available corner in the 3rd (maybe Lamarcus Joyner or Jaylen Watkins slip because of their heights?).
While I agree with you for the most part, it is my understanding that the Texans would not release Schaub because they want him to tutor the young QB that they draft if they do not go Clowney.

One of my problem with the Browns is that they have all this cap space and they are going to have to use it some time and they keep losing I do not think that some of their primetime players will be willing to do extensions.

pettine's value on cb's comes from his own mouth, and was in the Low Crossers book. We'll have to wait and see if cleveland makes a run at any cb's in the 2nd wave of free agency, such as DRC, cromartie, tarrell brown et. all.

but when the FA whiteboard pic was shown last night there were 3 cb's on the board of about 10 names.
I know that he values CB's second to the QB position but I just do not understand why they did not throw some of their money at one of the ones that has already signed. I just do not know how good the second wave is going to be if they continue to wait.

who knows if they tried or not. but revis definitely took less to play for the patriots. talib got overpaid, as did sam shields and vontae davis. and those guys got overpaid to play for contenders, let alone what it would take to play for cleveland. once the top tier guys are off the board, there's really not much difference in the second level guys. I would think they'd get another guy to allow them to move skrine to nickle and then draft someone to develop later in the draft.

If Pettine values CB's so much then why not take an extended look at someone like Dennard in the 2nd..?

Regardless if we draft Hyde or not - I don't like the idea of investing money in Tate, whom will most likely miss at least 2-3 games a year.

Let's find out how much they invest in Tate before we knock the deal? I do not mind a short deal for him, or a contract that allows the team to cut him after 2 years on the cheap.

As for the overall theory that RB being a dime a dozen to me is don't spend Top 10 picks on them. Late 1st rounders for a playoff team that needs them and/or 2/3 round picks gets you a mix of the higher talented RBs and for the right price.

As for CBs... I would not be surprised if we use one of our higher picks on CB (#26 or 2nd rounder) along with a few in the later rounds.

Talking about RBs... I either read this via a twitter discussion or some article... but the fact that RBs have been so devalued in the NFL and their short life in the league, a theory is popping up about younger kids not playing the position as much. ie use to be the star high school RB was also a safety/LB. Now, it might be best for those players to concentrate more on being a LB or Safety as they basically would get paid more in the NFL if they make it there.

In all likelihood, Dennard will not slip past the top 15 and will definitely not slip into the 2nd. MAYBE he will be available at #26 but frankly, I hope the Bengals would snatch him up before them.

New Kiper mock has Bortles at 4 and Benjamin at 26. I want to be sold on Benjamin but I'm just not there...yet.

I'm not sold on Benjamin either. Big receiver, decent hands but he doesn't have the speed and quickness of Jones, Johnson, or Green that makes him special. I'm not feeling BB @ 4 either. Draft a QB that high and your wanting him to come in and start. Why do that when you have Hoyer, and maybe Schaub? Guess the question is, What position do the Browns need the most and draft that guy at each turn.

I'd be surprised to see Benjamin go that high, don't think his film reads that well but I guess if a team really needs a red zone threat, maybe a team like GB would take the bait.

I still say the WR most likely to sneak into the late first or early 2nd is Jordan Matthews, and I'd love for him still to be there early in the 2nd if the Browns don't go Watkins.
