Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Shouldas and couldas
Watkins and Hyde
I have to disagree as much as I like Hyde just like almost everyone else I do not think he was worthy of the first round especially with West and Crowell and what they are bringing to the table.

I think the entire first-round draft was a bust with Gilbert and Johnny but Buffalo's pick next year is looking very nice when you look at their upcoming schedule. I guess I would have liked the Browns to take either Evans or Benjamin in the first round or perhaps one of the OT's because we are really lacking depth in that area. However, I guess that can be addressed in this year's draft. I just hope the Browns are not tricking us like to have been past years with a 6-3 record going into a very winnable game.

I'm not ready to write off Gilbert just yet. His first few games he looked like he had never played the position. However he's bounced back with some solid performances that show growth already. I'm willing to give him time.

Manziel we'll never know because he'll be in Jerrah World soon and we'll have 3 first round picks.

That said. It's going to be a lot harder on this defense to keep improving now that we just lost Big Phil for the year.

I somewhat agree regarding Gilbert because I do know that CB is one of the toughest positions to learn in the NFL but I am not sure if he is still worthy of the #7 pick.

I think that is wishful thinking about Johnny. I know there were rumors around after draft but have not seen anything as of late saying Dallas would be interested plus that leaves us without a backup QB.

Taylor was playing awfully well this season. That is a position of need that we will have to address in next year's draft. We have quite a few free agents on the defensive side of the ball and we are not going to be able to keep all of them.

CB is the 2nd most difficult position in the NFL. Honestly, with the changes to the game this year... might be the hardest.

Of course its wishful thinking about Johnny, sarcasm and a pipedream. However we have Shaw, whom I'd consider to be a more competent backup than Manziel.

As for Phil, he had a rough start to the season but was looking excellent in the short time he was back. The 5th year has already been picked up and I actually think we'll be able to sign all of our priorities on defense.
Tashaun will get a solid contract, probably 4 years with tons of escalators. Rub will be gone. Too expensive, not enough production. He was at one point 68th of 68 rated DT's by PFF.
Trying to think of who else would be a free agent? Not Winn or Kitchens. Both will probably be resigned though to modest contracts. We have a ton of cap space, so color me not worried.

Shear and Buster will both be free agents at the end of the year not to mention Hoyer along with Cameron (unless he retires because of constant concussions) on the other side of the ball.
One of the reasons Shaw was not picked in the draft was because he lacks the arm strength needed to play in the NFL and that is not just my opinion.

I can see both scenarios where Sheard is and is not resigned.

As for Buster. It's a toss up. If he asks for too much money then I have no doubt Williams could grow into a potentially very good nickel.

Edit. In regards to the offense. I expect Hoyer would take the home town discount as long as his signing bonus is reasonable. Base salary I'm sure will be team friendly with some performances booster. 3 year 4th team option.

Cameron is a wild card. His injuries this year mean either his value around the league could diminish. ( who wants to pay an injury risk?). Or he could try to cash in while he still thinks he can.

Take a look at the free agents for 2016 also Dan Snyder. I forgot to tell you that Miles Austin is also a free agent by you are probably just going to replace him with a draft pick.

You really need to re-sign players for continuity. You just cannot keep on leaving players go and replacing them with other free agents or rookies or whatever. I agree regarding Buster but that also hurts depth.

Trade deadline is a couple weeks past, so Manziel isn't moving. That Romo injury was bad timing for several reasons.
Jerry will either go through another year of Romo-Roulette or find somebody in next year's draft/free agency.
Best case scenario is Manziel goes all Carmelo Anthony and demands a trade with daddy, but I doubt the Front Office breaks even with the trade/pick they already blew on him.

Well that was a bit uncalled for. Say what you want but I would consider signing Miles. His hands have been absolute money when we need them. He could be the next version of JJ with Gordon and Hawk back.

I do agree about continuity, but that's also dependent upon a reasonable context for middle tier players. Especially since it is possible this team goes pass rusher in the 1st round. That would definitively make Sheard expendable. I myself don't think Buster would ask for too much. He enjoys playing with Haden and vice Versa.

One thing that's amazing about the Browns' success this season is that they have done it with little or no production from their last six first round draft choices:

Phil Taylor (2011) - 10 tackles, no sacks, on IR
Trent Richardson (2012) - no longer with team
Brandon Weeden (2012) - no longer with team
Barkevious Mingo (2013) - 22 tackles, 1 sack
Justin Gilbert (2014) - 23 tackles, no INTs
Johnny Manziel (2014) - basically has not played

I'd say that speaks volumes to Farmer's ability to find contributors at any level in the draft.

As for today? I think it will be an ugly win. Also, JJ Watt is probably going to do every snap what Gerald McCoy did to our Oline in the first series of the Bucs game.
I just want Hoyer to stay healthy.
