I just don't want this franchise taking the 3rd or 4th best QB and convincing themselves he can be a franchise player. That's how you end up with Blaine Gabbert.

I'd be happier drafting a Thomas or Mettenburger, letting them sit a year or so behind Hoyer and give a rookie proper time to develop. Even if Hoyer isn't the answer, and improved OL, another WR and a steady run game could make this a 10 win team with a competent QB at the helm. Especially in the now defunct, AFC north.

There is a difference of picking the 3rd best QB in a crappy QB draft versus a good one. For shit and giggles, why wouldn't you want the 3rd best QB in a 4-5 franchise QB draft?... what if almost all the QBs declare and we have Bridgewater/Boyd/Hundley/Mariotta/ etc to pick from? You telling me you wouldn't mind settling for a Boyd or Mariotta?

That is why Lombardi hasn't been around. All the scouts are out there checking out each of these QBs. They are putting all their eggs into finding the QB.... checking each guy to find out who is and isn't up to snuff.

Of course if none of the underclassman declare, then I agree with you.

What makes anyone beyond Teddy or Tahj franchise QB's? Mariotta plays in a system that allows him to look like a genius. The few times he's actually had defense pressure he's made questionable decisions. My point is - I don't see 4-5 franchise QB's. I see 1 maybe 2. The rest need work (IMHO) that puts them well out of the 1st round comfort range.

The 2011 draft supposedly had 4 "franchise" QB's. So far, only the first two taken have shown any promise ( Newton, Locker).

Who says Tajh a franchise QB? He plays in a spread system too? I go by my eyes and what scouts say. Some rankings I look at have both Hundley and Mariota ahead of Boyd. My eyes tell me Mariota seems like the best passer Oregon has had under their current system. I still need to watch Hundley more because his hype is comming from NFL scouts more than college people.

The weird part is both Hundley and Mariota are only redshirt sophomores. So MOST likely they won't declare anyway. But if they do... they could push a guy like Boyd down if you like him better than those two guys.

FYI - I actually hated that 2011 draft class... never liked any of them really. Seemed like a panic year for alot of teams and was amazed the guys went as high as they did.

This year has very good potential. Not only from top end guys to alot of unknown sleeper types that can go Round 2-3 (or late in 1st round) But do we really want to go the McCoy/Frye route again?

But really we won't know til we know who declares for the draft and we have a full season to nitpick all of these guys and to know where our picks fall in the draft and who else needs a QB.

Well, see this is why I don't want to get into specifics with specific guys. Personally, Bridgewater is the only one I'd trade up for, right now... its one thing to squeeze off a 1st rounder (especially like the #15 as opposed to the #1) for a guy at your spot, who has no reason not to succeed... its quite another to blow basically, last year's 1 (that they spent a pick to move up for and the guy is now in Indy), this year's 1, next year's 1 and a #3 for... really anyone or some such package. You'd better be darned sure, and I would't give that for Bridgewater anyway. Weeden may have been a stupid pick and a bust, but, he didn't set back the rest of the franchise's goals...

Edit: Oddly we got both last year's #1's off the field and got better. Bwahhahhahahaa.

It really depends what they think of Hoyer. If they think he is good enough to fill the role at QB while they develop a 2nd or 3rd round project they can wait. If they need someone new to start next year they have to pick a QB in the first round. Unfortunately that may mean trading away most of the draft to move up to get the guy they want.

I would much rather stock up the team with talent (CB2, WR, OL, etc.) and roll the dice with Hoyer and a mid-round project QB than to pay a ransom like Washington did for RG3. Now if the guy they want falls to one of their first round picks I say go for it as long as it only costs 1 pick.

I love that fact that the Browns have a winning record in the middle of October and we're still talking about the draft :lol: But seriously I would say this: The Browns have traded down recently. A lot. Some were slam dunk good moves (No Sanchise), others more questionable (No Julio Jones, though that one may not look too bad either, if he broke the screw in his foot like they are saying), but the bottom line is I think it's time for this franchise to DO something. They got one guy last year that looks good thus far, and then basically punted the draft to 2014. Now they have what they want...a shitload of cap space and a shitload of picks, with no rookie salary cap. There will never be a better time to go get somebody they want. Now, can LOLbardi Derp the shit out of it and pick the next Akili Marinovich Klingler? Of course. But it's time to go get someone and take a chance. The complementary pieces are taking shape, the the defense is more than good enough to compete. I want to see them get somebody and see what they can do with them. There will never be a better time to do so.

Now, all that said, I don't at all favor, nor would I ever, a global herp derp deal like the Redskins took for RGIII (and I said so at the time). But if they can get the guy they want for 2-3 picks (preferably all in 2014), then go for it. At least have the balls to try it.

it still takes a motivated seller coupled with buyers with enough ammo to pull it off. an RG3 situation will probably never happen again for many reasons. for cleveland to make a move to the top of the draft to get a qb, they need to have several things in place: first, the ammo to move up, which they do. second, they need to have a team willing to drop down because they don't need a qb. how many teams picking at the top of the draft don't need a qb? it's usually a rarity.

however, this year may prove to be the exception with teams like the giants, falcons, and panthers circling the drain. going by the antiquated trade value chart, a move to say #5 would require roughly picks #16 and #25. so, it's definitely doable if there's a guy they like enough and by some chance that guy slides down. however, teams picking in the top 10 may be far more motivated to just drop a few spots for a lesser return.

I agree with this. I prefer not to trade the whole draft to move up to get one guy, but if they can move up to get there guy and only cost us the two 1st rounders and maybe a 3/4th round type combo I can live with it (as long as it isn't trading up for Manziel)

My thoughts on Hoyer is that he is a decent QB, and by decent I mean he would be a really good backup for an upper level playoff team, but as a starter his ceiling is probably the game manager that can take your team to 8-8, but isn't special enough to win high level games.

In other words... he is a bridge guy. We have been SOOOOO horrible at QB he looks like an all-pro, so it is a step in the right direction. He is good enough to let us pick a QB that needs a little bit of development. And to boot Hoyer has the type of QB mind that should be a good mentor for a young QB.

But that doesn't mean we should wait til 2/3rd round to draft a guy. Nor does it mean trading up to get him. Like I said before... the more QBs that come out the better because it allows us not to trade up, or if we trade up it is maybe 6-8 spots. Because we need more to finish off this team.

I guess I do not understand why no one is talking about AJ McCarron. I mean he is a proven winner and plays in a pro style offense. I am concerned about a lot of the guys that have been mentioned above because most of them run spread offenses and almost exclusively work from the shotgun formation.
