i did at the time as i had no interest in claiborne or blackmon. blackmon is one puff from a year long hiatus and claiborne just got benched in dallas. should i feign some sort of outrage over trading a guy that was underperforming and getting very good value in return because i liked the draft pick 18 months ago?

You can't say it's "very good value" - there is no way to quantify it until they fuck up the draft pick next April - err I mean draft a player we don't need, no wait, I mean draft is for 7-7th rounders...shit I mean draft Jimmy Clausen....fuck, no I mean trade it to Minnesota for Christian Ponder....yeah, that's what they'll do with it...

getting a 1st round pick for a RB, let alone a RB averaging 3.5 ypc is good value. no other way to describe it. the rest of this is the typical whining that really serves no purpose until they actually pick a player.

Well we all have our own ways of coping. I'll continue saying these guys freaking suck at all aspects in the league, until I see something/someone play respectable football. Who knows, maybe the NFL will turn into the National Flag League (all signs point to this), and the Browns can maybe make a run. Ah who am I kidding, they would still be the worst of the worst

Yeah, 3.6 YPC is mediocre, at best - but did he ever get a chance to prove he was capable of more than that? He had a mediocre line with a crappy QB last year and a terrible line with a crappy QB this year - of course his YPC is going to be trash. That being said, apparently, the new front office has seen enough to believe that he is never going to be a star running back. And apparently the fans haven't yet seen enough to believe that. I guess nobody will know for a while until we see what he does in Indy, right?

On a more emotional level, the franchise just paid ~$13M and moved down ~10 spots in the first round just to tryout a running back for a year.

On top of that, in a year where there was some optimism due to a good young defense and a core of younger players on offense, they punt after 2 games. Honestly, it feels more like the front office trying to burn the whole thing down so that a series of 5-6-7 win seasons over the next couple years can be pointed to as "improvement" over what's going to be a simply dreadful season this year.

one legged montario hardesty performed better than he did last year, and dion lewis was better this preseason. that's not a good trend. if glass knees mcgahee or chris oingoboingo run for 3.4 ypc on sunday, with brian hoyer under center, it will make for an interesting conversation.

I'm tracking with the Blackmon statement. And I was one that felt Claiborne would have been a nice compliment opposite Haden but not at # 4 either, trade down in that scenario. At the time of the draft and even now I would NOT have traded up for either RGIII or Trent. Both were injury prone going back to HS and that did not translate well to the rigors of the NFL. It was never a question of talent. Should you feign outrage? Absolutely not. While the trade initially shocked me, after some thought, the trade does make sense. Where do you think they go from here?

The defense has looked reasonably good through two games but need some help at CB, S, and depth elsewhere. Focus must be on offense across the board. What position would you target initially? QB? or WR?

they clearly need to get a qb, bolster the OL, and get another WR. the defense is a cb and safety away from being straight nasty. going by this team's MO, they will target and sign one or two higher level FA's then supplement the rest with the draft. say they signed a cb and someone like ben tate or another FA RB. they draft a qb early, and a RT (moving schwartz to RG) and a safety in round 2. Realistic? maybe not. but they can go a long way in turning over the offensive roster.

so i would guess QB is the first pick and some other offensive pick later in the 1st, whether it be WR or OL. then BPA in the 2nd and thereafter, within reason.

You very well may be right. 17 games in just seems awfully early to give up on a guy with a lot of potential.

So, which is it?

The "core of younger players" includes that "terrible line" and that "crappy QB" ... not to mention Greg "Stonefingers" Little and Chris Ogbonnaya. So where is the optimism? Josh Gordon? Jordan Cameron? Other than them, who?

Eh, maybe, but Ingram hasn't done squat in NO and Lacy just got hurt too. I'm not sold on Alabama RBs...may be more of a product of the system there and the college game in general. Penn State backs have had a similar track record (Blair Thomas, Enis, KiJana Carter, et al.)
