Cleveland Browns (2013 Season)

I do not know why I do this but last night I tortured myself again and listened to Browns call in show that was hosted by Jim Donovan who is very passionate about Browns football. I cannot believe that he and Tony Grossi both said that Chud did not have final say on what players were kept on the roster and that Lombardi and Banner were calling most of the shots. If that is true, this team will never get any place even with all the cap room and draft picks that they have in 2014.

I guess I did not realize that most of the good special-teams players were not really kept and that is one reason why special teams were such a disaster this past season. The bottom of the roster was like a revolving door. I do not know

if Chud wanted to bring Bess on board or not but if he did not he was probably overruled. Cooper would have played much better.

They also said that Chud want to bring in a FB but was overruled or it was just not done.

Dieken was also on the show but he is too much of a homer. He will never speak the truth when it comes to the OL but he did say that we needed an upgrade at both OG positions however any of us could have told them that. He also said that Schwartz was spotted by an injury all season but I do not put much stock into that. I have forgotten that they picked up Faulk as a undrafted free agent so hopefully he might be able to step in at RT next season and maybe Swartz could be moved to RG.

Sobo over on the Browns Scout site in his latest mock draft has us taking the QB from Central Florida and Lee from USC but he also has the QB from Oregon coming out rather than staying in. I have also heard that Bridgewater might be having 2nd thoughts about coming out.

I'd love to take a look at Bortles. I love smaller school QB's. No thanks to Lee. Injury concerns.

Back to the defense. Kruger hasn't played terribly. Again, his knock was against the run. He's proved to be solid, but at the expensive of a pass rush. I'm hoping both him and Mingo find that balanced improvement in year 2.

If LOLBardi and Banner are having final depth chart calls over the coach, then this franchise is fucked. Banner isn't a game day personnel guy - why they try convince themselves of more is mind blowing.

I could be way off base, but Bortles reminds me a lot of Charlie Frye in college.

Non-fiction: 1.5 sacks without Suggs (6 games), 7.5 the rest of the way...

And when Suggs came back he was a shell of himself for a while. Point is - Kruger can be effective when paired with another competent pass rusher on the other side of him. Sheard and (lord willing) Mingo fit that role. Kruger's lack of elite production is on him. He need to stop playing so tentatively in obvious passing situations. He does that stupid little stutter step to the inside then plays patty-cake with the tackle. Few times did I see him setup that inside move with a bull rush or just trying to speed around the corner.

wrong again:

2012 regular season stats.

7 games without suggs: 23 tackles 4 sacks, 3 passes defensed
8 games with suggs: 20 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 passes defensed

also to be noted that kruger played the first 4 weeks of 2012 with a back injury, which actually had him sit out week 2. so, playing injured, he had almost identical stats with and without suggs last season.

Its the NFL, everyone is an injury concern. I mean obviously I'm not a Doctor (nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express) but, assuming that he's healthy, I really don't know how you can't give him a really close look. If you can get a talent like that with a 20 something draft pick, you have to think about it.

Kruger played basically the entire season, was okay for half then put up the big sack numbers after Suggs came back. The sacks got Kruger got the big bucks - it's one of those stats that gets guys overpaid - and Suggs was a part of that.

That's in the league, of course. However you try to avoid players that have a documented history of missing collegiate games... Espeically when you're the Cleveland Browns. No point in buying a Ferrari if you can only drive it during rush hour.

Suggs missed two games later in the season as well and Kruger put up decent numbers. Doesn't change the fact that your original assertion was simply wrong and Kruger put up nearly identical stats with and without suggs.

And certainly I'm not saying to ignore it, either. Sometimes I think GM's (and by sometimes I mean always) outkick their coverage a little bit and forget the overall goal here is to get good football players on your team, its my opinion that Lee is a pretty good one. Obviously if the dings he's been getting are structural or appear to chronic, then stay away. I'm not sure this past year he didn't have just the one injury that didn't get all the way better until the end of the season, if that's the case, I think he's intriguing if you have a chance to get him.

Cleveland Browns shut out Baltimore Colts for 1964 title: This Day in Browns History

I was at this game:biggrin2: sat in the lower deck of the closed-end of the old stadium. Fond memories. The Browns defense made Johnny U look like Denard Robinson had made Raymond Berry look like Braylon Edwards. Frank Ryan threw 3 TD passes to Gary Collins. All of them were post patterns.

It was sort of funny back then you did not think that close to 50 years later I would still be waiting for another Cleveland team to win a championship. The Browns were so dominant back at that time. Played for the NFL championship up the Green Bay the following year only to lose in the mud. Jim Brown then retired but all Browns fans thought that Ernie Davis (RIP) would replace them along with Leroy Kelly.
