Cleveland Browns (2013 Season)

I have my doubts they look at QB in the draft next year. The way things are currently going, they're probably picking in the 15 range, and in the 20-23 range with Indy's pick. Mariota and Bridgewater are likely gone by that point. Maybe Johnny Paycheck is there, but I can't imagine them seeing him as a fit for what they're trying to do. I think when all's said and done, Boyd will end up getting the Troy Smith draft treatment. They're just too similar in so many ways. They might be happy to go another year with Hoyer/Campbell as they've proven they can be productive in Chud's system. Maybe take somebody in rounds 2-4 to develop, maybe Boyd if he's in there somewhere. One name that might pop up is the Carr kid from Fresno State if he ends up mid-1st round. Wouldn't be surprised if they kick the tires on him.

I'm in agreement about Boyd. When I watch him play, I see many similarities to Troy Smith. Not a bad thing except when it comes to being a QB in the NFL. Manziel is a very good football player and selecting him would add a certain excitement to the Browns but his style of play could lead to a very short NFL career. Would he be worth a 1st round pick? I'm on the fence on that one. Mariota (if he declares) and Bridgewater will be gone early. There are some intriguing prospects McCarren, Carr, Mettenberger, Hundley, Murray (Eric Zeier re-visited?), and Stephen Morris to name a few.

At this point in time, I feel this team are a few players away from being a legit playoff team. I'm game for the Browns running the show with Hoyer and/or Campbell, select one of the QBs in the middle of the draft to be understudies and fill the holes that need to be filled (should have been filled draft before last). Fill the skill positions (WR, RB), Strengthen the O-line, and get a CB, S, and ILB to further strengthen the defense. Resign key FAs Mack and Ward. They should be set

 wash, rinse, repeat. Mariota doesn't run Chud's offense and I don't think Bridgewater has the arm for it.

fill the other holes first. QB should be the last thing they are worrying about.

Ummmm, didn't Chud's offense have Cam Newton running it for the past few seasons?

And you know what happens when the QB is the last hole to fill? It remains your last hole to fill unless you get lucky. Free agent QBs are expensive and mostly flawed (rare exceptions). Tis best to get your QB now, get him some seasoning and fill your holes through free agency and rest of draft.

Sure. If that QB is available. There isn't one. No need to waste a 1st round pick on a QB that would end up being a backup at best. You forget that this organization has failed QB draft picks in the 1st round as well as the later rounds.

I'd be happy taking the BPA. Drafting a Mettenburger in a middle round and letting him learn behind Hoyer. Hoyer would be a pretty damn good QB if he had a bigger arm.

That said - you're kidding yourself if you think Flacco is an elite or even above average QB. How quickly have people forgotten how shitty the Ravens offense was until week 11 last year. Then a fluke playoff run on the back of his Oline and Boldin secures him one of the highest contracts in the league. He's a fucking hack. His toss up, moon ball that Haden picked off was his frustration and lack of competitive fire. Basically throwing it up for anyone and saying 'fuck it'.

I'd take a healthy Hoyer over Flacco.

Marcus Mariota is having a great season for a college QB. But he isn't nearly as physically gifted as Cam Newton was and continues to be.

Let's also dispense with the BS - if the 49ers can look like Super Bowl contenders with Alex Smith as their QB, the Browns can do the same with Brian Hoyer or Jason Campbell. QB isn't the priority, building a sustainable support program should be and finally appears to be the case and focus.

And to build on Buckeneye said, the Ratbirds grossly overpaid Flacco for his playoff run. His stats last year didn't warrant anything like what he got in that contract. And since they paid him that huge deal, they had to stop pursuing Anquan Boldin, and the results this year have been significantly worse. Ironically, Baltimore might have finally broken it's model last year by overpaying him.

Okay when reading this post just remember I am the messenger

Sobo, who used to be an NFL scout, is one of the premier posters on the Scout Cleveland Browns free-forum. Every week or so he posts a mock draft.
This week's mock draft as the Browns taking a RT from Tennessee with their first pick in the first round and a TE from Texas Tech with their second pick in the first round. I will briefly summarize his rationale behind this mock draft.

He believes that Schwartz is a much better run blocker than pass blocker and this would enable moving Schwartz to RG. The TE from Texas Tech is 6'5" and about 250 pounds and is an excellent receiver. He would fit right into the type of offense that Turner likes to run.

I have also read in a couple places where they might not re-sign Mack but move Greco to center next year so maybe Luavao might be moved to left guard. I guess that is the one question I have with this scenario is it would take Greco's place at LG. I guess they could find one in the draft or free agency.

Hell. No telling what those bozos will do on draft day(s). Can't be any worse than MH and his cronies. At least I hope not. I would love to be in that room prior to and during the draft in the attempt to understand their rationale on certain selections. Plus I hope the Sobo scenario does not play out.

Pinkston is back healthy, no?

Not sure which TE they're referring too. Maybe the front office likes the approach that Cincy took with Gresham and Eifert? Id still like another WR though.
This tight end Jace Amaro, TE Texas Tech I think he is a redshirt sophomore.

Pinkston was supposed to come back after the bye week. Have not seen anything about him lately and I do not know if we can count on him.

sobleski was never an nfl scout. he worked for scout.com as an nfl analyst. he knows his stuff, but he's no different than most other scout.com employees. he's done a mock draft every week for about 6 weeks straight, and every time he's come up with some different combo of players for the browns.
