Cleveland Browns (2013 Season)

With Hoyer and Campbell playing well I think it leaves them open to draft a QB in the second or third round and try to develop him over the next year or two. There is a pretty long list of good QB's that could be in the draft this year and they aren't going to have a shot at the top 2 or 3 unless they pull an RG3 type trade up. I'd rather find 2 starters with those first round picks to fill some of the remaining holes that they have. If they fall in love with a QB that falls to their first round pick I don't have a problem pulling the trigger.

Halfway through the season the Browns needs chart has changes a little

Still big need:
QB
OL

Nice to have:
#2 WR
Bad ass ILB
#2 CB
#2 TE

In the draft I would love for them to find an ILB that could be their Ray Lewis. That would be kind of like picking Mingo last year even though they already had 2 starting OLBs. It would be safe to pick a high WR to cover their ass against Gordon getting popped or Little developing the dropsies again. I'm willing to roll with the current DB depth since Skrine has been impressive so far this year and they have McFadden and Slaughter developing for the future. At least Cameron has shown to be one of the best young TE's in the NFL so that position of need went away except for depth. Gray might be able to develop into an athletic threat out of the backfield or at TE.

I would put #2/1 WR up in a "Still big need" because of Gordon's history

I would be open to talk about Marquise Lee. Especially with the gradual improvement of the defense. CB isn't as glaring a need as it was the start of the season.
I wonder who we could look at for mid-round RB's? I mean, we get Lewis back - but he's the Darren Sproles of this offense. Obby runs hard and is a decent pass catcher. I'd like to have someone who's effective at both and not just a situational kind of guy. Maybe Washington would part with Helu for a 5th rounder? (call me crazy, but I like Helu)

The OSU fan in me wants to say Hyde if he's there in the 2nd. Sounds like they like Tate so they might just address RB with FA money.

and if either one of Little/Gordon would get hurt the Browns would not have and adequate backup plus what happens when we would go 3 wide. I also do not think OL is that big of a need except for depth. Schwartz has come on since Luavao has come back. Depth is the need here.

Maybe Washington would part with Helu for a 5th rounder? (call me crazy, but I like Helu)
crazy:biggrin2:

Guys... we still need a QB. Just because we finally got an average QB play for the first time in a couple of decades doesn't mean they can sit on their laurels. If you want to win championships, you need a star QB.

So you have to go for the guy they love. Only problem is with winning, it makes that harder to trade up to get that guy.

What guy is there to love? At this point I'm not even huge on Bridgewater.

There's just no sure fire thing. And this team is in the playoff hunt with Jason freaking Campbell. Build depth at G and ILB. Give me Carlos in the 3rd or hell, even in the 2nd. That Evans kid from A&M might be a monster. No thank you to Watkins. Every time I hear about him he has some nagging injury issue.

Id like to see Logan Thomas available in the 3rd. He's got a great build, strong arm, decent release and mobility. However I've only seen him play a small handful of times. He's has moments where he has serious promise and others that, like any prospect, require attention.

Fact is, a front office trying to convince themselves they've found "their guy" after the upper echelon of QBs are gone is exactly how you end up with a Ponder, Gabbett, Weeden, etc etc.

Logan Thomas? Aye, we must not have seen the same games, because every time I have seen him he has been Gawd-awful. That Duke game alone was enough for me to say Do Not Want. I agree on the QBs in general though.

This WR class looks to be a bit of a disaster. Lee only plays when he wants. Watkins is always hurt. Evans looks promising but he is only a soph and we would have to use our first pick to get him most likely. Shazier and Roby are projected as mid first rounders, I guess they would be in play if we don't trade up, because most of the other mid-first rounders look like defense.

Another Do Not Want: Melvin Gordon. He will not survive 10 games in the NFL.

Like I said, I'd need to see more on Thomas. The WR class is just flat out not very deep. Lee's lack of tenacity looks like him just reserving
for the NFL draft. Kid has great talent. He's quicker, strong and little bigger than Robert Woods who is turning into a really nice #2/3 for Buffalo.
I'd be happy as anything with Carlos. As for Shazier and Roby? I'm not sure where the Browns could even begin to play Ryan at. Roby would obviously be a fine #2 CB and would give us one of the better secondaries in the NFL.

There are still holes to be filled on offense and defense - I don't worry about getting superstar QBs to win championships when the Ratbirds win with guys like Dilfer and Flacco while teams like Denver don't with Peyton Manning. Christian Ponder was the "next big thing' last year and he can't get on the field. Same with Josh Freeman as Minnesota fans will find out sooner rather than later.

There aren't any super star QBs in this class. At best you'll get another Jason Campbell or Brian Hoyer out of what's there and what is likely to be available in the 12-18 range since the Browns keep winning games and fucking up the draft positioning. I'd have no problem with them taking the best DB on the board in that range and then taking the Colts pick and getting a solid offensive lineman.

That presumes they will be active enough in FA to get a young and serviceable RB or two.

Dilfer was how many years ago? The league has changed, Dilfer was the last game manager to win. And don't fool yourself, Flacco is an above average QB that can make plays and was not a game manager. If Flacco was on this team we would be rocking. If we stick with Campbell/Hoyer our ceiling is a playoff contender that might reach a AFC title game at best. And the only way we could get to the Super Bowl is if we have an elite defense along with superstar talent around Hoyer/Campbell.

Mariota is the superstar QB in this draft, Bridgewater is bleh, but there are alot of guys. The challenge is finding the diamond in the rough. Because that is the only downside to all the QBs in this draft. Not all of them are polished. Hundley has the tools but needs the seasoning, A couple of small school guys could be huge.

NO MORE 3RD ROUND QBs!!!! Haven't we learned anything from Frye & McCoy??? Need to pick a QB no later than early in the 2nd round. Prefer to use ONE of our first roudners. Find a guy and go with him. The luxary that Hoyer/Campbell provide is they can pick a greener QB prospect that has potential and let him sit for one season or til injury hits. Heck, I wouldn't mind doubling up by picking another QB late, I can bet your Logan Thomas will be there in the 6th round +

As for filling out other needs... we do have two first rounders, As long as we don't trade up we can still pick a 1st round db, you can pick 1-2 RBs later in draft, you can pick some guards. Free Agency can fill the other voids. At least now the number of holes on this team is not over half the team.

Flacco is one good playoff run from being a backup somewhere else other than Baltimore. Don't fool yourself.

 wash, rinse, repeat. Mariota doesn't run Chud's offense and I don't think Bridgewater has the arm for it.

fill the other holes first. QB should be the last thing they are worrying about.

Would the browns make a move for a guy like Schaub as a stop gap? He's done in Houston, I don't think he has the arm for Chuds offense, is mentally/physically fragile... sounds like the perfect fit.
