Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

who would you have taken at #22?

I'm not him either, but I imagine the guard will be an 8-10 time Pro Bowler for the Steelers...we could have had a Joe Thomas type at guard...yes, it's guard, but with Thomas, Mack, and that guy, we could have had a hell of a left side of the line for Richardson to run behind for the next 5-7 years.

But fear not...I'm sure we'll get some turd of a guard from Abeline Christian in round 6 who runs a 7.7 40 and is a nice "project".

Browns offensive transformation means the end of Colt McCoy

Apr 27, 2012 -- 12:29am
We all knew the Browns? offense had too many holes to be transformed overnight.
But how is this for a start? Franchise running back in Trent Richardson and new starting quarterback in Brandon Weeden.
The Browns left no doubt ? none whatsoever ? that the Colt McCoy era is over after one full season as starter and a two-year record of 6-15.
?We?ve got a new quarterback that?s going to be with us,? coach Pat Shurmur said. ?I think tonight is more or less about Brandon Weeden and less about the competition.?
Wow. Not even using the ?he will compete for a starting job? line.
I asked GM Tom Heckert if he will seek to trade McCoy over the weekend.
?I think that?s something we?ll talk about tonight and tomorrow,? he answered.
It?s obvious now why McCoy shunned interviews all offseason. He had to know ? or fear ? his time in Cleveland was coming to an end.
This move was driven from the top. Sources said owner Randy Lerner expressed frustration about the team?s quarterback situation and President Mike Holmgren made it his personal mission in this draft to decide on McCoy?s replacement.
?When we went through the process of evaluating him,? Shurmur said, ?we became very fond of him. We all did, from Randy to Mike and Tom and myself. We came away with saying this is a guy we?d like on our team. And that?s where we are right now.?
I was told that Heckert and Shurmur held out initially for supporting McCoy with playmakers selected with the top three picks. But neither gave that impression when they faced the media late in the night.

and this was hilarious too

Colt McCoy ‏ @ColtMcCoy Congratulations Trent Richardson.. Glad to have you in Cleveland! #gobrowns
and then obviously nothing after Weeden was drafted

ok so now that we have to deal with Weeden for the next 2 years, whether anyone here likes it or not (which is all of us)...i think we need a good weed nickname for him...some strong chronic...purple kush? northern lights? G-13? bubble gum?...or maybe The Chronic is good enough....either way guys this has to get decided before the season

For the record I had nothing wrong with the Richardson trade...basically a case of jock straps and a tackling dummy for the chance to make sure we got who they wanted, because the lower round guys aren't going to start on this team, they're lucky if they make the team, and I'm sick and goddamned tired of "projects". But they're throwing all in on Weeden obviously...McCoy and Wallace have no chance to start no matter what they do. I found it interesting that Holmgren was so gung-ho about finding Lerner's personal QB replacement considering McCoy was a Holmgren 3rd rounder...but whatever. Another Captain Checkdown gone, and a David Carr get raped in the pocket clone is in...goody goody.

Ouch, I feel bad for him. Weeden is going to be the next Colt McCoy if the browns dont get a playmaker at WR, and find a RT. Maybe we can get big Mike Adams at 37. I wish they took Riley Reiff at 22

Guess I'm in the minority here...I don't ABSOLUTELY hate the Weeden pick (but maybe its just because its draft day and that's generally the best time to be a Browns fan anymore and I'm trying to be optimistic).

Personally, I was thrilled when I saw that Reiff and Decastro had slid this far and wanted them to take Reiff. Hell if they would have gone WR or even defense I wouldn't be mad.

But Weeden, c'mon. Hell, I'm still slightly skeptical of RG3 since he played against the Big 12 (still think RG3 will be pretty good, but no guarantees of course). Weeden played in a freaking air raid offense.

I actually liked Weeden going into the draft...in the 3rd or 4th round maybe. You can probably argue he's the most NFL QB in this draft besides Luck (RG3 has upside off the charts IMO, and the rest of the QBs...meh).
He's an upgrade over McCoy (again IMO, but lets be honest...McCoy was not the long term answer).

Still, I would have preferred waiting til next year and taking one of the top QBs in that draft (much better class) and take a lineman or wideout with 22.

Sooooooooo, basically I'm trying to be positive. When Wright came off the board I checked Twitter and saw that someone said Browns were targeting Weeden...wtf

But I still think we can get 5-6 good years out of him and with the rate our QB play has been going lately, I guess I'll take it. Could be worse...could have taken Tannehill at 4. Or even worse, trading up to three and taking Tannehill.

I think having Weeden on the team is actually good, as right now McCoy's the only Holmgren guy, the others were holdovers from the last regime. I think McCoy was only starting because he was the only QB with Holmgren's fingerprints on him, meaning NOT starting him would mean the McCoy pick was a mistake. I think with Weeden it at least opens up some legitimate QB competition between the two...assuming Colt's still wearing an orange helmet in August.

I actually don't think McCoy is the problem. The lack of playmakers is the problem. The drops are the problem. An inconsistent o-line is the problem. The defense carried the load for this team all season long last year. When they went with Richardson, I thought to myself "FINALLY. We've stockpiled and traded down enough, this is the year we bolster the offense and get ready for 2014-2018 when the Steelers and Ravens are aging and our guys come into their prime!" But no. We draft Weeden. What the hell is the direction of this team? Is the idea to trade McCoy, throw an old, immobile, inexperienced QB in a foreign offensive system to the wolves in 2012? Go 1-15 and get Barkley? Because that's where we're headed.

The pick is made, and we can't change it now. So...what do you guys want to see in Round 3? Who's still available that we can draft that will come in and be an instant improvement and contribute right away? Because we need it. Badly. If I were the Browns, I'd look no further than Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw. Keep the youth movement on defense going. If not Upshaw, then in my opinion, it's gotta be offense. The Georgia OL is still there. There's a couple of WRs there that I think aren't NFL-caliber WRs, but would be upgrades over the current batch of butterfinger-havin' guys we've got. Who do you want in round 2?

At this point, I think you MUST take OT with the #37 pick. And it looks like one of the good ones will be available; Glenn, Martin, or Adams.

Whatever else happens after #37, happens. I'd love to see them get Devier Posey at a good value. I watched that college skills competition a couple days ago and he looked great. We know he's really good. So hopefully it's not just my scarlet-colored glasses, but I think adding Posey to the receiving core would be effective.
