Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

Well, look what Matt did when he was with the Lions. He really shouldn't make any comments about anything related to football .

I don't think Matt Millen was actually sneaking into offices and dosing GMs so they sign crazy Millenesque contracts... That said, I don't know anything about the Walter Cherepinsky who wrote that blog.

ESPN Insider

Earlier this week, a rumor began to make the rounds -- possibly originating from Jeff Schudel of the News-Herald -- that the Cleveland Browns were talking trade with the Houston Texans, and that their target was Ben Tate. In theory, Tate could provide an answer to the "Who will be the Browns' starting running back this fall?" question, but it now appears that we can toss this rumor in the trash.

"Forget anything you read or hear about the Texans considering trading RB Ben Tate to Browns," John McClain of the Houston Chronicle tweeted Thursday morning. "Not going to happen."

The Texans found out last season that having both Tate and Arian Foster on the roster is a huge advantage; when one gets injured, the other is there to pick up the slack. Furthermore, running them as a committee backfield keeps both of them fresh for the latter stages of the game, when a strong ground attack can seal victories.

It seemed unlikely that the Texans would choose to delete such a player from their roster -- unless they were getting a first-round pick back in exchange -- and now we can all but officially kill this rumor.

The browns only hope is to trade with st louis for the 4. There were rumors they were talking and would swap the 4 and 6 for 2 second rounders. Which wuold give the Browns 5 picks in the top 40. They could get Richardson/Wright/OL/DE or OLB with those four picks. That is the best case scenario right now. Its that or we are already in bust for barkley mode.

My bad that would give us 5 picks in the draft in the first 40.

Well, if Tate's a no-go, It's fairly certain that rb will be a priority in the draft. No way they're dumb enough to think Hardesty is good enough to handle the job. Unless, they're being stubborn jackasses and are intent on proving trading up for him wasn't fucking stupid.

Got this from another forum of mine - put things into perspective for me. John Clayton's Winners and Losers from the first week of Free Agency, 2011.

Original Link

Winners

Philadelphia Eagles
They had one of the best flurries of moves we've witnessed in recent years. The Eagles' cornerback trio of Asomugha, Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel might be one of the best ever. They also added Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin to the defensive line, and Evan Mathis gives them depth at guard.

Arizona Cardinals
Their aggressiveness stunned everyone. Not only did the Cardinals pick up Kolb in a trade, they added guards Daryn Colledge and Floyd Womack, cornerback Richard Marshall, linebacker Stewart Bradley, tight ends Todd Heap and Jeff King and wide receiver Chansi Stuckey. And as if that wasn't enough, they are now talking to wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

Carolina Panthers
Linebackers James Anderson and Thomas Davis, defensive end Charles Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams all decided to stay in Carolina, and the Panthers also gave linebacker Jon Beason a five-year contract extension. Somehow, they also found a way to trade for tight end Greg Olsen and sign kicker Olindo Mare, defensive tackle Ron Edwards and safety Sean Considine.

Jacksonville Jaguars
They added to a growing group of young, drafted players by getting linebackers Paul Posluszny and Clint Session, safety Dawan Landry, cornerback Drew Coleman and guard Jason Spitz.

Losers

San Francisco 49ers
The team went backward in the first six days. They needed to re-sign offensive lineman David Baas to replace Eric Heitmann at center, but they lost Baas to the Giants. Linebacker Takeo Spikes left for the Chargers. They cut cornerback Nate Clements and failed to talk him into re-signing.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs opened free agency with $52 million of room, but all they have done is re-sign offensive linemen Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood. Their only free-agent addition is punter Michael Koenen.

New York Giants
It's been a bumpy start to free agency. The Giants had to cut starting offensive linemen Rich Seubert and Shaun O'Hara to get under the cap. They locked up running back Ahmad Bradshaw on Monday, but not tight end Kevin Boss or wide receiver Steve Smith. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora wants to be traded. The Giants still have time to pull things together, but it was a tough few days.

After you calm down from all of your excitement, tell us if you think he or Frosty are an upgrade from Mitchell?

To be fair, one doesn't have to be excited and still think that a bag of soda cans and a trash can lid is an upgrade over Mitchell...

I like how they say the Niners not re-signing Nate Clements is a bad thing. I know he's a Buckeye, but holy mother of Christ he was awful.

I think part of the point is that the perspective of "winners and losers" based on that point in time turned out ok for NYG and SF in the end.

He was awful his entire tenure there. :p

It certainly did turn out well. And Nate not being there was a big part of that, unfortunately.

And not so well for Philly/Arizona.

We've made two decent signings and filled a hole. Sure it's a stopgap, but it frees us up to draft a different position with #22 or #37.

And we cut Pashos. Addition by subtraction.
