Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

I don't give a shit if it's Al Davis' corpse...anyone that can get this team to the playoffs 2 years in a row, come on down...

That said, one has to worry about the flip side. One never knows how much loyalty a new owner will have to anyone or anything...and there is that $4 billion+ stadium in LA in the works...

Looks like this is more Than a Rumor

Ex-Philadelphia Eagles owner could be involved
Signs point to the sale of the Cleveland Browns being completed this fall.

Sources with knowledge of the talks said discussions to sell the Browns have been taking place since the late spring, but can?t be completed until October of 2012.

That is the expiration date of a 10-year moratorium on selling the team, a moratorium Al Lerner asked of his family before he passed away in October of 2002, according to a source familiar with the inner workings of the Browns front office.

That is one contributing factor in the team?s sale taking place now.

The team would be purchased by Jimmy Haslam, a Tennessee businessman who is a minority owner of the Steelers. Haslam would obviously have to sell his interest in the Steelers before buying the Browns.

Another factor in the sale could be simple timing. Joe Banner resigned as president of the Eagles in the spring with the desire of putting together a group to buy a team.

Howard Eskin of NBC Channel 10 in Philadephia reported that Banner is part of Haslam?s group. Eskin originally reported on June 7 that Banner wanted to buy a team, and the Browns were one that could be bought.

That led the Browns to release a statement that said, ?the Browns are not for sale.?

But the front office and coaching staff all will be working with an uncertain future, as new ownership often wants to hire its own people.

General manager Tom Heckert worked with Banner in Philadelphia, and coach Pat Shurmur was an assistant with the Eagles when Banner was in the front office.

I just hope we will not get a Dan Snyder owner:crazy:
By Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND -- We know the family of Jim Haslam is negotiating to be at least part owner of the Cleveland Browns. We don't know if they will have controlling ownership, or be part owners.

But we can guess that this family will not settle for being in the background.

Jimmy Haslam (Jim's son) has had a minority ownership in the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2008, so it makes little sense to want a small piece of another AFC North franchise.

The Haslam family owns 550 Pilot and Flying-J truck stops and convenience stores across the country. In 2011, Forbes Magazine rated Pilot Flying J as the 11th-largest privately held United States company with $18 billion in revenue and 19,000 employees.

The Haslams have given millions to the University of Tennessee, including a $32 million donation for the Haslam Business Building on the Knoxville campus.

Jim Haslam played football for Tennessee, starting on the Vols 1951 national championship team. Before going into the gasoline business, he considered being a high school football coach.

Another of Jim's son -- Bill Haslam -- is governor of Tennessee.
Given this basic information, isn't it fair to assume the Haslam family would want controlling interest in the Browns?

So they are a big business family, a political family and a football family.
They have enormous influence in their home state of Tennessee, and they are well-known to the NFL because of their part ownership of the Steelers.

A guarantee of the deal would be that the Browns would remain in Cleveland but there is no guarantee that Cleveland Browns Stadium might be renamed Pilot Flying J Travel Centers Stadium:lol:

I think it would be the Pilot Flying J Travel Centers Factory of Sadness Stadium

I thought its been mentioned before that people were shocked he was around this long.
If you're talking about Lerner, there is an article above saying that there was a 10 year moratorium on the sale of the Browns out of the Lerner family. If you are talking about Big Mike, I do not think time is on his side.

More regarding the guy Banner who might come onboard with Haslam and possibly the reason Big Mike's future might be a little cloudy:)
Banner was the team President and has been with them since Laurie bought the team in 1994. He hired Andy Reed, Heckert and Howie Roseman (who was promoted to GM when hired Heckert). He's considered the best there is at working the salary cap and negotiated all their contracts. Sounds like he may have lost a power struggle with Andy Reed because of the negotiations with players like Desean Jax that got ugly (when Reed wanted it done last year).
